Harley gear indicator failure
« on: July 27, 2014, 11:56:19 AM »

Last weekend my Harley gear indicator quit to work after riding in a heavy rain >:(. 1.st gear shows as it should be but others neutral included it shows 8N.
Anyone have this kind a problem?
Anyone knows if it is repairable or is buying a new the only solution? :(
Advise me if anyone can

Is your bike a 2014 model that comes with (gear indication) as one of the standard features...........or do you have an older Harley with a gear indicator added on.  A little more info might be helpful to get you some answers. :nixweiss:

I'd suggest checking the electrical connection at the data link connector for moisture, then remove the cover for the actual indicator module so you can access the indicator and look for signs of moisture getting inside.  Try blowing it out with low pressure air if you find anything.  Other than that, I can't think of much else you can do.  The actual indicator should be sealed and water tight, since it's designed to be exposed to the elements.  If you haven't had it very long check into the parts warranty, I think it's one year in the States.

I'm attaching a copy of the installation instructions in case you don't have them.

I installed one of those on a local's bike Jerry.  You're right there's not much that can be done with them.  Only parts that matter are the display pad itself (sealed) and the pigtail.  So if the connections are clean and tight it's either a bad display (not available separately from the kit) or some data error from the bike.  If the latter I'd be afraid of what larger issue the display error may be indicative of.  Hopefully poor or dirty connections.

Thanks Jerry and Twolanerider!
I have taken the display apart and dryed it for the possible moisture carefully with a hair dryer but no affect. Also have  checked the data : no errors found.
Must now double check the connections.
