Howl on deceleration
« on: July 30, 2014, 05:37:03 PM »

I have a howl coming from the primary when decelerating. It's not the typical 1st gear noise, but in any gear during long rides down a hill off the throttle.
I'm thinking that maybe my primary chain is too tight. Any thoughts or experience with this issue. I cant remember if it started after switching to synthetic ATF.

The chain in the primary will make noise all the time as the tension is constant. You may hear it at a certain RPM but tight it tight.

However belt tension in my opinion is being set too tight on the new ISD drives. If you check the belt tension cold vs  hot  With a hot rear pulley you will find that set to spec the belt is extremely tight. Its a trade off I run them on the loose spec and at temp they are snug. My own bike is nice at temp and below loose spec cold. But Then again I can put a falcon belt on a 140/ 140 bike and they dont break HA HA  ;)..

Did this just happen to show up right after having the tire changed?  If it did, or just after having the bike serviced, I'd be inclined to say drive belt tension as well.  All too many "techs" or owners doing their own service have a tendency to just wing it when setting the drive belt tension, as opposed to doing it per the manual with the specified tool.  And yes, the belt tension specs on late models seem to be a bit on the high side.  Just be careful to not back off excessively from those specs.  A loose belt creates other problems.

Thanks  I believe it started after the dealership removed the inner primary to replace a loose shift lever on the tranny.

If I pull in the clutch and coast you can hear it go away when accelerating and come back when off the throttle down to idle then it will go away again. It's a howl or a wirl.
