Confused and need Enlightenment
« on: August 10, 2014, 12:22:50 PM »

I was reading a post today and was surprised to see that the 120R has ball bearings in the cam support plate.  From my meager understandings is that the 05 dyna and earlier and 06 earlier touring twincams had ball and/or a combination of ball and roller bearings for the outer support of the camshafts.  In 06 dyna and later and 07 later touring twincams the roller and ball bearings were eliminated the the outer camshafts were running in the raw aluminum bore of the outer camplate.  In addition the inner cam bearing races were increased in diameter and so was the respective case bore to accept a lager needle bearing.

How is it that the the 120R uses outer cam ball bearings?  Are the 120R cams unique or do they have custom machined bearing surfaces?  Just curious.

I use an R&R two piece cam plate (gear drive).  It uses outer cam ball bearings.  So therefore I have to use Dyna 05 and earlier camshaft styles.  Then I have to have the inner cam bearing race presision ground down to accept a Timkin race of the proper OD to fit into the larger bore of the larger Dyan 06 and later inner cam bearing.  Weird I know and a PITA when I want to do a cam change.  In simpler terms my cams are 05 Dyna and earlier on the outer cam bearing surface and 06 Dyna and later on the inner cam bearing surface.  Yikes!

So I was wondering if the 120R cams were done in a similar fashion?  :confused5:

Thanks!

The stock 120r motor does not have outer cam ball bearings (in the camplate)...

Then add me to the "confused and need enlightenment" list.

My 120r does not have outer cam roller bearing/ball bearing in the camplate.  The current (2014) SE catalog states "billet cam plate" in the description of the motor.  Someone else will have to explain your pdf...

Thanks Sadunbar.

Here is the link to the guy who said he blew out his front outer cam plate ball bearing on his 120R.

I hope its OK to post the link?
