RIP Robin Williams
« on: August 12, 2014, 03:16:08 AM »

Just heard on the news tonight he committed suicide ... only 63 yrs. old. I read that he was fighting cocaine addiction, booze and depression, 3 things I never knew about him. I guess being successful and having money doesn't always buy happiness. RIP

Can't get my mind wrapped around killing one's self..........times can be tough sometimes, but the event you'd create for your family to endure would be enough to stop most?
I guess no one really knows how a persons mind operates if all those demons are in hot pursuit??
Who the hell knows............?

I've had 2 family members commit suicide. I find it very selfish. I'll never understand it.

Have had three close friends that suicided over the years.  The demons that get one to that point don't care about unlimited funds nor fancy heralded support mechanisms.  Sometimes apparently the chit is just too deep.

Have heard the "coward's way out" mantra before; too many times.  The departed friends may have been lost or unbelievably afraid, but pusillanimous they were not.  Sometime when things are quiet, the tv off, the phone on mute, all distractions gone sit and consider looking down the barrel of your pistol or pulling that line taut around your neck then taking that last final step off the chair or pulling the trigger.  Really think about it.  It takes something most can't muster or comprehend to do the deed.  It may be an act of desperate desperation.  But cowardice it is not.

This guy was, seemingly, always "on" for everyone else.  So much so we can't comprehend he'd be in such a place to do this.  Whether being on for everyone else for so long finally just burned the man out or whether his demons and depression were long simmering and he finally could no longer bear it I can only hope he found his peace and say thank you for the many many times he made me laugh.

I'm sorry but ^^^^^ is f$&king bullchit. It's nothing but being a coward. For a person to take is own life and not think of his family or friends. There is nothing in this world that would make me hurt my family and friends by taking my own life.  F$&k that!!

Nobody knows...I don't call them Demons inside someones head, it's themselves inside themselves.  It's selfish, Yes and a waste, but only he knows why.  The family left behind to sort this out, is who I feel sorry for, I've seen it too, THEY will never get over this....

That your perception is this is, of course, your own Pat.  For me I'll choose compassion over accusation for the sake of both those who just could not cope and those that loved them while always remembering there but for the grace......

Interesting viewpoints expressed in this thread. I for one will miss his comedy and pray for him and his family.
I try to remember things like " judge not lest you be judged"  since I feel suicide is an individual thing and everyone has a breaking point and that point may not be as high or as low as our breaking point.
Could a judgmental person decide that eating too much, exercising to little, drinking alcohol, smoking or even riding a motorcycle (especially without a helmet) a form of suicide and is selfish and cheats the family and friends?
I agree that fame and money doesn't guarantee happiness. I'm sure the depression, cocaine and booze did not help his decision making skills.
Sometimes we never know the full story and load of stress the person is going through such as a terminal illness that isn't public knowledge, a broken marriage, pending arrest etc. that could be adding to the level to create the "straw that broke the camel's back" effect.

Mighty harsh words there pat1.  Certainly do not condone nor excuse what he did but a tiny bit of compassion is in order imo.

Good interview.  More conversational than many of his that often get more play.  But good to see the guy think and enjoy what's going on at the time with a guy that was a friend and contemporary.  Around the twelve minute mark they start discussing Williams' recurrent support of and visits to troops abroad.  Have read interviews with troops at FOBs and their appreciation of the guy showing up out in the boonies to make them forget, relax and laugh for awhile.

I do have compassion for his family and friends. I loved his work. He was a great person. I feel for his family.I don't have compassion for suicide none at all. I'm sorry but that's how I feel. As I said at the beginning of my 1st thread.

No matter who it is I don't have compassion for suicide. It's plain selfish.

It's not right in anyway you look at it.

I'm sorry to offend anyone but that's how I feel about it.
