The total cost of a new purchase is much more than just sticker/negotiated price. You need to add in sales tax, ESP and the cost of typical upgrades that most will do (exhaust, Air cleaner, Tune, etc).
As a resident of the state of IL, I'll stick to buying used bikes from private parties.
In IL, a buyer only pays the state a flat $25.00 tax for a private party Bike purchase regardless of its purchase price while a dealer purchase requires the buyer to pay the prevailing sales tax on the full purchase price minus trade value which in IL can be close to 10%. This saves you a couple of grand right up front.
There are also plenty of low mile used bikes on the market. Many of these still have years left on their fully transferable ESP. Also, if you have the patience to shop around, you'll likely find one where the seller has already eaten the cost of typical upgrades that you'll want/need to make.
While a private party may not be totally upfront, its not like dealer /dealer sales persons are any more likely to be either. You can get screwed from both (caveat emptor).
This is a excellent time to get a great deal on a pre-Rushmore bike. If you want a Rushmore, in another year or two there will be plenty of them on private party market for substantially less than today.
