Have a trust set up for each kid and financially I plan on living to mid 90s. All of my grandparents made it that far and my grandfather will be 100 next year. Parents pushing 80.

Not hard to do if you start financial planning early in life. (The financial part that is, making it to 95 might be harder)

Dealer at Space Coast HD in Palm Bay FL confirms today that used CVO baggers are not selling, without me volunteering what I've read here. :(

Picked up a new 2014 Deluxe for the wife a few weeks ago.  Dealer let it go for 23,500 which was a good deal since my wife wanted the bags, windshield rims etc... and adding them to a new stock deluxe would have pretty much cost us the same as buying the CVO.

Yep, most people would rather pay $27K for a new nicely equipped Limited with a warranty whether than the same amount for a 2-5 year old bike.  Interest rates cheaper too on a new bike if financed.

I can understand that. That's why most people don't make wise financial decisions. Case in point, given the choice of a used CVO that's worth $27K and a brand new $27K Limited, that brand new $27K Limited will deprecate about $5K as soon as one rode it out of the dealership. Where that used $27K CVO can still bring $27K after riding it out of the dealership.

Great point, I never thought about the deprecation on the new bikes vs the old bike at $27K. I'm still trying to sell my 2010 SEUC.

;D    It's going to take some people a little more time before they get used to the new reality concerning depreciation on Harleys.  It's no longer the 1990's, where people paid over MSRP and could sell the bike two years later for as much or even more than they paid originally.

There is another reason why some, including yours truly, prefer to buy new rather than used, even though we definitely know all about depreciation.  I'd much rather buy new and have full knowledge of the history of the vehicle, as opposed to buying someone else's headache.  There is no such thing as full disclosure when buying a used anything, and the liars seem to outnumber the honest folks when it comes to unloading troublesome products.  The same people who come on the forums and bitch loudly about being ripped off by the dealer and manufacturer on the sorry POS they bought, will turn around and sing nothing but praise for that same product when they're trying to unload it on the next guy.  If I buy new, the only thing I have to worry about is whether the manufacturer built the thing correctly and with good parts.  Admittedly that in itself is a huge crapshoot with a Harley, but not so much with other products.

The total cost of a new purchase is much more than just sticker/negotiated price.  You need to add in sales tax, ESP and the cost of typical upgrades that most will do (exhaust, Air cleaner, Tune, etc).

As a resident of the state of IL, I'll stick to buying used bikes from private parties.

In IL, a buyer only pays the state a flat $25.00 tax for a private party Bike purchase regardless of its purchase price while a dealer purchase requires the buyer to pay the prevailing sales tax on the full purchase price minus trade value which in IL can be close to 10%.  This saves you a couple of grand right up front.

There are also plenty of low mile used bikes on the market. Many of these still have years left on their fully transferable ESP.  Also, if you have the patience to shop around, you'll likely find one where the seller has already eaten the cost of typical upgrades that you'll want/need to make.

While a private party may not be totally upfront, its not like dealer /dealer sales persons are any more likely to be either.  You can get screwed from both (caveat emptor).

This is a excellent time to get a great deal on a pre-Rushmore bike.  If you want a Rushmore, in another year or two there will be plenty of them on private party market for substantially less than today.

Well when it comes to purchasing new Harleys it's a crap shoot as well. If you go back and see my first posts on this CVO at 950 miles and less than 2 weeks old my engine blew after fueling up at a service station. Apparently a valve got stuck in the open position taking out the piston and shearing off the spark plug. Harley gave a choice of either $1,400 and take care of it myself or restored to like new condition. I took the cash and with more cash out of pocket I had the dealer install stage lll up grades and dyno it. The dyno and the SE Tuner sucked, I was barely getting 30 mpg. I had Doc Weaver up in Miniola FL install a TT Master tune and he re dynoed the bike. Huge difference in power and removal of throttle hesitation. On my way home I got over 42 mpg!

Then at 21K miles my oil pump is taken out along with the cams. Back to dealer under warranty but more cash out of pocket for better upgraded replacement parts. Ever since, the bike, other than its OEM battery dying after 35 months and one rear shock replacement, has been running flawlessly with 41K miles on the clock. I'm batting .500 on trouble free new Harleys and .666 on trouble free used Harleys.

Yesterday we rode down to 45th St. Harley in West Palm Beach. They had a new Road Glide CVO in blue but it was sold sitting on the floor. I asked what it was sold for but the sales person was hesitant in giving me the price.

He asked what I was riding and I told him 2011 Road Glide CVO. I then asked if there's a market for used CVOs bagger, he said yes and when I'm ready to trade to give him a call. I mentioned I had 41K miles on it. He said stop riding it, you got over 35K miles.

I laughed, what difference does it make since they're going to depreciate my bike as much as possible anyway.

As we were about to roll out of the dealership, out comes the sales person yelling out, that they sold the new Road Glide CVO for $42K. I don't know if that's a high $42K or in the low $42K, either way it's at least $2K over MSRP.

Whether its a new or used CVO, if the dealer owns it, it's gold. If a customer owns it, its a turd.

I have never sold or traded in a harley but my guess is it is probably no different than buying/selling a car. So as to get the best price both ways you should plan ahead. Sell the harley yourself just before riding season starts then wait until fall to purchase you new cvo.       I don't know...do you think any cash savings can be had if it was bought/sold like this...I would think so. It may also mean going most of one season without a ride until the fall purchase.
Another thought is consignment. My dealer provides this service. I do not know what the fee is for such service. I can see myself going through this same dilemma in a couple years.

I'm looking to purchase a 2015 CVO SG. After visiting several dealers who were all close on a trade in value which I couldn't accept I sold the bike on my own. I wanted a new bike and to use only the funds generated from the sale of my bike to fund a new one. I was fortunate and sold the bike in 4 days after listing it on Ebay. I wasn't looking to make a killing on the bike and placed a realistic value on it which no doubt help move the bike quickly.

Price it right, it will sell. The model of your bike will appeal to some, none or whole bunch of folks. List it in as many places as possible. I had purchased a 5 year extended warranty which was included in the sale, it had 47 months left on it. The buyer told me it was the icing on the cake for him in sealing the deal. Like my buyer, I would have a hard time dropping $26K+ on a bike without one from a private seller.

After selling the bike on my own and finding a dealer who will sell me the bike at MSRP I'm roughly $6K+ in the black. Deposit is in, waiting for the call.  :drink:

I just purchased a brand new 2014 CVO Limited $2000 below MSRP "Out the Door" meaning it was even less once you figure in prep, taxes, etc.  Also negotiated gift card, credits, etc but it was like pulling teeth!  When I asked about trading in my 2005 SEEG or putting it with them for consignment, they said no way.  Said the last one they had sold and shipped to NV was a loss for them and they didn't want to go thru that again.  Wouldn't even talk any  figures since "...I had more than 25,000 miles on the bike..." even though they had just found a new bike for me and brought it in for the sale......Sold the '05 to a fellow rider for $16K....it had 46,000 miles and had just  gotten its 45,000 mile service check.

Moto CO. doesn't even have enough faith in their own bikes to trust them over a measly 25k...
