ruff week and now loosing a family member
« on: September 11, 2014, 11:08:38 AM »

if it wasn't bad enough that I've been battling Brachiates for the last two weeks,
now I think we know it's time to say goodbye to Miss Bell,
our 16 year old German Shepard golden Retriever mix.
she's been on the down stroke for some time but still very happy,
but now her rear legs / knees have given out and can hardly stand
doc yesterday said she was in pain and for now gave us some meds to help but she won't take them.

Hate to do it but would rather put a sharp stick in my eye than see one of our family members (pets) suffer.

Sorry to hear that. 16 years is a long and full life for a dog. I have been through this a couple of times myself. We nursed our Golden to 16.5 years, but the last few were difficult with lack of rear leg strength and loss of hearing and eyesight. Once she lost her appetite, we knew it was time. It's weird some days you think it's time to put her down and she seems more lively than before. And then some days are horrible. You will sense when the time is right. The most humane thing we can do is not let them suffer in pain. But still it's never easy. Good luck to you and prayers and best wishes to you.

It's rough when the kids are that sick.  Almost lost Runtz last year with pancreatitis and now Aubrie has an enlarged heart with her first spell of congestive heart failure this past weekend....probably have her another 6 months or so.  I love 'em but I think these are the last pets for me.  Vickie and I get too attached to the babies.  I've cried more for these dogs over the past year than I care to say.  I'll say a prayer for y'all as you approach this decision....not an easy one.

some vets will come to your home to administer the final shots. More comfortable for all involved. I feel your pain. Our pets never did one selfish thing in their lives. Keeping them hanging on is selfish on our part I feel. Good luck

Just went thru this last Nov with our 14 yr old Yorkie, Doc said I would know when it was time, well I did, the worst day of my life, but our vet made it so easy and comfortable for him.  I don't think we can do this again either, I'm too old for any more heartbreak.  Part of my heart went with him.  I still miss him and ...Well, good luck, I believe in the Bridge, I have many there waiting for me.

 Hey all,
yes having to pick up my 56 lb baby yesterday and get her to the car and in the vet was all I could do, vet was wondering which of us was in worse shape, just found out I also have pneumonia,
hard head wouldn't go to the doc two weeks ago when I was suppose to!

I'm sure our vet would come to the house if we asked, we've been taking in rescues for about 15 years now, which Bell was, they said she wouldn't live long and that was two years ago.

we finally got her to get one of the meds down this afternoon and damn if she's found some spring!
but she's down at the side of the bed with me now
she's watching me and I'm watching her

I had the vet come to the house years ago when I put down our 12 year old Shepard. She had filled up with fluid and would not let me touch her. I had to slide her out from under the front deck on some cardboard to get her out poor thing I knew I had to ease her pain. It is never easy.

Sorry to hear.
I have an 8 year old chitzu that has convulsive attacks.?.
They last about 30 mins where he is total unresponsive besides the convulsions. He has no idea that it's happening and they say they don't feel anything from it either. When he finally comes out of it he appears lost.
There are medications you can give them for it but people say it destroys their quality of life.
I had no idea this was common for this type of dog, if I had known I don't think we'd have him only because it's hard watching him go through it.
Our prayers go out to you and your family.

I wish you the best....one of the hardest things you will ever do. You are looking at it properly, living in constant pain is no way to live. One day people will feel the empathy for humans as they always have for pets. Thank goodness our pets don't have medical insurance.

Having lived in a pet friendly home for 17 years I know the heartache you're experiencing. Our latest loss was our 16 yr old Min Pin.   I sat in my recliner and cried when I realized that day had come.  It has to be one of the hardest decisions to make.  Our thoughts are with you.
