Ride Report - Western Maine
« on: September 14, 2014, 10:55:55 AM »

I rode to ‘Height of Land’ in the Rangeley Lakes area of Maine Saturday. It was a chilly day with complete overcast that didn’t warm up all that much, but overall a great ride day just under 300 miles. This was one ride where felt heat from the 110 engine wasn’t an issue - LOL... This scenic overlook above Mooselookmeguntic Lake receives a lot of traffic from vehicles touring the area and hikers following the Appalachian Trail in summer. I planned to photograph it with less people around – it was a good day for this purpose as it was cold enough at the site the few cars stopping didn’t stay long. I’ll post a shot of my CVO taken at this stop in a separate email.

Photograph of my bike including a self portrait. I was wearing insulated underwear, insulated jeans and a pair of goatskin leather over-pants from Langlitz Leather on this ride.

We were just up there last month. Beautiful area but the frost heaves in the roads make for some interesting riding. Not to mention checking for loose parts after a days ride. ::)

That's the truth - logging trucks and weather conditions sure have beaten the roads badly. It was only in recent times that the state  did something about road repairs as it was downright dangerous to visit the area. The roads on Route 16 in nearby New Hampshire were even worse I found - definitely will slow one down.

We hit 25a and 118 in NH on the way to the Kanc last month.......those 2 roads need to be blown off the face of this earth

Most other roads we took up North were in good shape. Hwy 6 from the boarder to Lincoln Me was new...smooth as a babys butt and no lines painted , it was raining and very  difficult to see the road

The roads may be a little rough ( Bump, Bump ) but the scenery and lobster for breakfast, lunch, and dinner make for a great trip.

Looks like the rough ride was worth it, thanks for posting the pics.  Last time I was up in Maine, I spent most of the time on the coast.

Was up in the area this past June. Did Laconia, NH bike week then on to Bar Harbor, Maine. It is beautiful up there. I never owned any raingear but decided I better get some before we left. So we were there nine days a not a drop of rain...no complaints... The lobster was great but when I got home my first meal was a big filet mignon.
