Comfort - Rear Legends Air Ride or Russell Day-Long
« on: September 15, 2014, 12:15:42 AM »

I need help deciding what would give me and my wife a more comfortable ride. Is it a new saddle or new shocks? I am debating between Russell Day Long custom seat and Legends Aero-A shocks. If you could only choose one which would it be?

I currently have the Harley premium ride hand adjustable shocks. Does anyone have experience with Legends air ride kit? I am interested in how comfortable is the ride with the Legends shocks.

Any advise will be appreciated.

I would say most of my comfort comes from my Mustang not my Legend Air. If I had to give one of them up it wouldn't be the Mustang I can tell you that!

I assume were talking about a 2014 Limited here?
I find it hard to believe that any other seat will be more comfortable than the Hammock seat that comes on the Limited. I know, to each there own, but in general speaking this seat is pretty hard to beat.

I installed the "home made" air suspension and it's without a doubt the most comfortable ride I have ever had on a Harley.

Yes, I do have an 2014 CVO Limited. After about 7,000 miles my rear is killing me. Russell Day Long is one of the most comfortable seats you can buy. I know everyone has their own preference but this seems to be the general consensus from the motorcycle community.

I believe Legends is the best air ride system but I am no expert and I would like to hear from people that use these type of shocks. Please keep the conversation geared toward shocks VS. seat.

My wife is only going to let me buy one  :nixweiss: :( :nixweiss:

One thing I should mention is that I have a 30in inseam (a little short) and 290lbs (a little fat) and the wife is skinny. I need something that s comfortable and can support my weight for long rides. I would like to do the Iron Butt ride.

We have this suspension on our 10 ultra. I put them on mainly for lowering the bike in parking lots.
The more weight we put on the bike the better these things ride. We both love the cushy ride they provide. As much as we like them, we would NOT trade them for an uncomfortable seat.

My opinion.    The seat is fine. The shocks just suck.  Period.   We rode yesterday  160 miles. shocks aired to 48.   Felt every dang bump in the road.  I am waiting on new ohlins I ordered. I will report what the difference is once installed and fine tuned.

I've got the Legend Air Shocks, and there's a whole lot more to the benefits beyond just the much better ride.  I've got a switch to allow adjustments on the fly, which is great with changing conditions.  Nothing worse than guessng the proper air pressure with a passenger and luggage, and find you're still bottoming out. Just a little more air on the fly and you're good to go. Having that infinitely adjustable capability on the fly alone is worth the price of admission.

Also, when parking on on level ground, you can raise or lower it for a more comfortable lean. When changing tires and doing maint, you can more easily raise and lower the bike so reach the axle bolt/nut so you don't have to remove the mufflers.  And lastly, with an auxlillary hose, you can use the pump to add a little air to the tires in an emergency.

But the best is the improved ride and control.  I can't imagine riding a touring bike without. I'm just surprised MOCO doesn't offer a compressor kit yet?

I agree with Trans am and mrmagloo, if the shocks suck it doesn't matter what seat you have the ride will still be uncomfortable.

I also have only a 30" inseam (probably closer to 29") and my air ride allows me to lower and raise at will. I have double adjustable air switches with override so I can flip switch one and air up to "my" pre set pressure for riding two up or flip switch two and air up to the preset pressure for riding solo. Flip the override switch and air to whatever I want the pressure to be. Moment switch for air dump to desired height for flat footing or exiting the bike (which also helps my short chit wife get on and off). The ride comfort of this system is simply awesome and the handling is way, way better than stock.

I have the older style Legend airs, and they don't ride that well solo (190 lbs).  They are better when 2-up (330 lbs).  I've heard the newer Legends ride better.  Interesting note: at Sturgis this year, factory rep said they sell them for riding comfort, not for changing bike's height.

You might want to look at the Danny Grey seats with the Airhawk system in them.  I use an Airhawk, and it extends my riding time on my (HD Hammock) seat from 1.5 hours to all day...huge improvement.  The Danny Greys are expensive, but they don't move you higher like the Airhawk pad (by itself) does.

Xmas came early this year!!! My wife is going to let me buy the Legends Aero-A FL air ride kit and a Russell Day-Long seat, I don't believe it gets much better than that.

I have been riding this Season  with Legend Aero A . I have in dash gauge also which is very worthwhile. We ride with 75 to 100 lbs. Depending on load. This is on 2012 skunk. Also went to 13 inch length. The ride is far superior to stock. And the adjustability is awesome. We did a 836 mile day with no complaints from my wife. Have 15k on this season so far and wouldn't change back to hand adjust shocks.
