2008 FLHRSE4 stage 1 or not
« on: September 24, 2014, 11:02:40 PM »

I recently purchased a 2008 SERK with OEM air cleaner and after market Vance & Hines cannons.
The dealership isn't sure if it is a stage one configuration or not. I would think that a stock CVO
would be in stage one tune.  Does anyone know for sure?  Thanks

Good question, subscribed to this, I also am interested in the stock calibration difference, if any in the CVO ECM and the ECM that comes on non CVO bikes.

A CVO is Stage I straight from the factory.  It has increased displacement, high flow air cleaner, and a less restrictive set of mufflers compared to a stock standard model.  Ten years ago they actually said that, and the next step up calibration from stock was called the Stage I Race calibration, used with higher flow exhausts and intakes, as opposed to the stock Stage I calibration.  These days they don't offer illegal "race" calibration downloads, since the EPA and CARB finally started paying a little attention.

Why the question?  If you're trying to determine if the current calibration is appropriate for the bike, the dealer can definitely check to see what calibration is loaded to the ECM and compare to the calibration that came stock.  If it isn't the stock map, and it isn't one of the canned maps Harley offered with the SEPST, then it will take some sleuthing to figure out exactly what you do have.

If the bike has a stock air cleaner and pipes and only the mufflers have been changed, you have nothing to worry about with the OE cal.  A Race Tuner will give you the ability to slew the closed loop mixture a few tenths of a point richer but it's not necessary if your only concern is will the calibration accommodate the slip ons.

Thanks for you comments. The reason I was asking the question in the first place was "knowing for sure" in conversation with fellow bikers.  Happy Trails
