Octane
« on: September 30, 2014, 09:39:23 AM »

Well now that I am an owner of a 2014 Limited the dealer tells me to burn 91 oct or better. I will have to use a booster if I fuel up at home. What is the dope on good boosters or can you make your own.

If you have the bike tuned you and use a lower octane rated gas.

you can buy those little bottles(for 1 tankful) at most bike shops for 5 bucks or go to any auto parts store and get a large bottle for about 3 bucks.

Boy I feel for you bubtrauma...that would be a total pain in the butt, having to carry the additive around with you not to mention having, I guess, to run your tank near empty all the time so that the additive/fuel mix is correct. Good luck with the new Limited though and stay safe.

Ride it first before worrying about anything.  Octane ratings speak only to anti-knock (detonation) abilities of the fuel.  Nothing else.  No extra power nor extra cleaning nor ability to attract women to the bike just because you've paid extra for higher octane fuel.  So ride it first.  If it doesn't knock don't worry about.  Because that's the only thing higher octane fuel will protect you from.  If it only knocks on the hottest of hot summer days when you're close to home that sounds like a good excuse not to ride locally when it's so damned hot anyway.

If you find that you have to have it.......and prob won't, its much cheaper to make your own. We used a mix of 100oz Xelene or Toluene,  25oz Diesel & 4oz Tranny fluid. Mix this at 10% with 89 and you get 91. Don't store for long periods.

I've run 87 octane before when I've got caught out. If you don't rip throttle or lug it mine ran just fine.

When accelerating keep rpm over 3500...this keep the compression down a little and help eliminate detonation.

87 octane may crank slow when engine temp is really hot, or after a fuel stop.

We get 93 octane premium all over the place down in our part of the world.  Thing is, when I'm travelling around the country (really around the North/NW), the octane is a bit less to the tune of the best you may get is 87 or 88...even had to use 86 a couple time.  I've never noticed much of any kind of issues if I used the lesser octane rating.  Mine wasn't tuned the last trip (but skunk ryders was) and he was getting great gas mileage with no adverse effect from the lesser octane we were using and neither was I.
Would I prefer to use a higher octane?  Yep.
Will I run what's available and not worry about it?  Yep on that one, too.
