Lifter Exam
« on: October 07, 2014, 12:10:59 PM »

My 110 starting having a loud noise that quickly goes away within a few seconds after starting.

Even though it sounded to me like a noise that went much deeper into the bottom end I thought I would go for the low hanging fruit first and pull the lifters and replace them.  I installed the Woods Directional lifters back in April of 2012 and they have 16,000 miles on them.  They did not appear to look too bad compared to some examples I have seen on the forum.

I have the S&S Premium lifters on order and will install them upon arrival.  I hope my noise subsides with this change out.

Cams are Tman 625’s gear drive.  Springs have a 176 seat pressure and 410 at full lift.  Intakes are 2.120 and exhaust are 1.650 with a 10.5 compression.

Some Wood lifter installations will do that, tap for a few as it warms up. You could have tried to readjust them, see what that does.

Might have something to do with the recommended oil viscosity from the lifters manufacturer. By the manufacturer I am not referring to Bobby Woods.

You're probably looking at the wrong part of the lifter.  The rollers look good, can't tell about the bearings, but the tapping on initial startup is usually an internal problem with the hydraulics.  Wood Directional Lifters have been known for a tendency for being slow to pump up since they were first introduced (I had two sets of the early ones, both sets were defective and they were returned, whereupon I just went back to H-D "B" lifters).  You will most likely be better off with the S&S Premiums, IMHO.

Forged pistons? I've had 2 sets that made noise on a cold start up, with 10 to 15k miles on 'em. As long as they weren't using oil, I ran them.

Thanks for the feedback.  I had heard a bout the Woods needing to pump up from excessive bleed down.  I never heard a peep from them in 16,000 miles until just now.  I am still not so sure the noise is from them anyway.  Sounds too knocky rather than ticky.

The pistons are JE forged.  Never made the noise until just recently.  Not burning any oil.  Whatever is the cause of the noise it goes away within a few seconds but is quite loud at first.  It only does it on the first start-up for the day.  Cold or not, it does not do it for successive starts the balance of the day.  That's why I looked to the lifters first.

Lifters just came so I will know soon enough!

Your diagnosis sounds correct.

Both pistons sets I had that knocked on cold start up were JE. Once warmed up, good.  I ran 'em for thousands of miles like that.

Well the new lifters are in and the start-up knock is gone.  Weird, I would have never thought that a lifter could cause the deep down knock I thought I was hearing.  Anyway, I am glad the noise is gone.
