How is the riding around Charleston, WV?

Can someone tell me how is the riding around Charleston, WV?  Road surface quality and "fun" factor of riding are what I am looking to know.

Some of the prettiest country I know of. We usually make a trip down through Blackwater falls and over towards New river Gorge every couple of years. Sorry I don't have any route #'s for you because we usually just take whatever road catches our fancy and at dark find somewhere to stay. This time of year with the leaves changing is perfect timing!

Every year we go to southern West Virginia (Mingo County) to visit family, often ride up the Maryland, PA areas too.  Throw a dart at a map and you will usually hit a good road.

However, any roads that are being used to haul coal are often not in great shape.  Describes large chunks of southern WV.

Just watch out for those one lane roads with the double yellow line down the middle. I believe the theory is everyone drives four wheel drives so you keep one side of your cage on the road and the other side on the shoulder.

Around Charleston your going to have more traffic in general.  Go further east and a little north. Highway 39, 33, old 55.  Look east of Elkins around Seneca Rocks. Petersburg, Franklin and that vicinity.  Roads are good quality, and no coal trucks.  :2vrolijk_21:

Ride 33 east into VA over the mountain, then turn around and go back over..   :bananarock:

Like everyone said, the better riding roads are northeast in Fayetteville area or South in Bluefield/Princeton area. Charleston area has a lot of coal trucks coming to docks along Kanawha river and all major interstates in the state intersect there.

If you come South you are gettin in Hillbilly Rocket Rider territory and we might ride with ya!!!

Thanks for all of the replies.  I am looking at an opportunity that would relocate me to Charleston, and quality riding plays into the decision.

Some nice roads out that way, last time we went through there  we were headed north (sorta) towards home. I think we took 4, 15, 20, and somehow ended up taking 50 east into Aurora ( I think) and stopped for lunch at the ONLY place for miles around - good food and friendly folks to set a spell and talk with.
