Reading Cylinder Head Temperature
« on: October 19, 2014, 12:15:16 PM »

Got a question on reading head temperature. I haven't noticed if this is the normal or not but....

I connected TTS this morning, went to lead load a new MAP in my 117. Before I started her, I went to record generic data to review later. When I started the motor, the cylinder head temperature read 72F right away. The ambient temperature was 50F. I guess it's possible that the head warmed 20F that quick, but I clicked start on the recoding recording as soon as the motor started.

Could this be that the sensor is off a little, or did the head start to heat that quick?

Thanks
Brian

You need to be very careful when asking about this. Are you talking about engine temperature or head temperature as they are two completely different things and many people on the internet have no idea about it and typically confuse the two readings.

It was the head temp reading Steve, not the calculated engine temp.

You have it WRONG, as most do. Engine temperature on a HD Twin Cam is the reading take from the sensor that is mounted in the rear of the front cylinder head on a Twin Cam engine! Head temperature is the calculated value, not engine temperature. This is one of the big problems as I see it. People start passing bad information around until people start to believe it.

Then I'll take a look at the recording, see what engine temp says.

So.... I guess the temperature unit is OK. The engine temp reads right at 50, same the shop thermometer was reading when I walked out there.

Thanks for the clarification Steve.

In the early versions of DataMaster I left out the head temperature reading as I knew it was going to be problems. Now that everyone has been convinced that you must have them we added it in, but you can see the confusion it causes.

I think Cole has reached the point where he deserves a special Title. Something to separate him from the Gurus and wizards.
If this was the Corvette forum he would be referred to as an ECM engineer or technition. Problem is there's no voodoo or magic in those titles as we all know is clearly required for real Harley knowledge. What did they call the head guy in Harry Potter movies? Looked like an old biker dude, no body effed with him with out consequences. Kinda like Cole. Lol..

Suggestions?

Some of these guru's have been confronted with the truth.  They still continue to spread the false info.

Agreed, seen it done.... On forums that banned Steve and myself for it. Seen it done by you too in fact... on a forum that banned me. I use the "back door" to read some of your latest enlightenments, I just can't post because I dont "see" everything the way the "clique" does. Some of us just keep getting better. Others don't because they already know it all... or at least they've convinced themselves they do.

Professor Cole? You know I kinda like that. I always picture Cole as holding one of those pointer sticks that the early school teachers had. The same stick they slapped the chit out of with when you disagreed with them Lol,,,.
