Gas Gauge Way Off
« on: October 27, 2014, 04:42:44 PM »

2014 CVO RoadKing, dealer raised the tank to get to the brake lines in the recall. Something came unplugged and no readings on the gauge, back to the dealer they plugged whatever back in, gauges read again, except the low fuel light comes on after a 130 miles, and range reads 54 miles to empty and theres still almost 3 gallons left in the tank. Anyone know how these get recalibrated? The dealer isn't giving me any warm and fuzzy feelings that they know how to fix it.

If the gauge was relatively accurate before they screwed with it, and consistently reads low now, they either managed to mess up the float or more likely messed up the electrical connection such that you now have excessive resistance in the circuit.  Higher resistance equals a lower gauge reading.  That's how the system works, the float is attached to a variable resistor.  When the fuel level is high, the resistance is low.  As the fuel level decreases, the resistance gradually increases.

Regardless, they screwed it up and they need to fix it.  If they can't diagnose a simple fuel gauge circuit, lord help you if you ever have a serious electrical problem.

Don't know how they could screw up the float by just raising the tank, but a dealer tech might find a way LOL. I have to think it's electrical. If the tech goes to bending and adjusting the float it likely will never read accurate again, in which case I'll b*#*ch until it's right. Paying the premium for a CVO, I expect the bells & whistles to work.

The fuel gauge isn't "bells and whistles", it's an important piece of equipment that comes on every bike and it's supposed to be accurate.  I agree just lifting the tank shouldn't have bent the float rod, but I just offered the possibility because I've seen some places do things I thought were impossible.  I think it's much more likely to be electrical.

"The fuel gauge isn't "bells and whistles", "

I agree Jerry, none have worked very good for me since HD started putting them on. This one with a low fuel light and range (distance till empty) is like B & W to me. Pisses me off I might have to keep track of miles...........like I did on my Panhead.  >:(

Fuel gauge should work, I agree but I have never relied on a Harley gas gauge since I have never seen one accurate. Use my trip meter as my gas gauge, fill it up and 200 miles to empty has never failed me on a 6 gallon tank!

Good luck on getting this one fixed.  Just gives you a warm fuzzy when you take one in for a repair and it comes out with a whole 'nuther problem.

While I enjoy the LED lights on my tank "gauge", I've never used it.  In sunshine, it's useless.  Plus, I really don't like taking my eyes off the road that much trying to see how many LED's are still lit.  Why oh why didn't they just leave the gauge on the dash?  You still may not trust it but at least it's lying to your face, not your belt buckle.
Anyway, I use the method Kojak mentioned....keep my odomeder on "miles to empty" mode.  When I'm between 150 and 200 miles down the road, I've already started planning a gas stop.  Has worked for me on many a mile.....

Ridgerunr, sorry about your problem. The other day I was coming home from a ride. I can't remember for sure when the gauge went to
range mode, but I think it was between 175-180 miles. Range mode started at 34 and then kept dropping until I stopped for gas and it showed a range of 18 miles. My tank took 5.3 gallons to fill. I don't try to top it off. When the nozzle trips I stop putting in gas. It was almost to the top. CAHDBIKER

Man, I rely on mine all the time. The thought never occurred to me that the gauge may be wrong. Fortunately for me it's accurate.

Update:
From the tech, ........ the fuel gauge is linked to the ECM, and is constantly monitored from the gauge and inputs from the EFI system to determine fuel level and estimated range left. When it got unplugged, and then ridden for several miles it caused the learning process to shift thinking the bike was empty. Maxi-Fuse had to be pulled, reinserted to reset the learning process of fuel level and range. The low fuel light should only come on with between .8 and 1.2 gallon left in the tank. It will take 2 full tanks ridden the way I normally ride to determine if the low fuel light will come on prematurely. Should be OK since reset.  Whole lot more electronics on these bikes than my 10 year old RG.
I did suggest buying the guy that did the recall a shop manual, then when the warranty is up, give the manual to me.  ;)
