Mono Vision Contacts
« on: October 27, 2014, 07:30:54 PM »

Anybody riding with mono vision contacts? or trying to ride with them? lol.

I'm having a horrible time with these things.
Just trying contacts for the first time. Thought I might be able to use normal sunglasses with them and leave the tri-focals at home.

The worst was a trip home after dark the other night. Double halos around everything that even resembled a light, double and very blurred vision. I actually ended up riding most of the way home with my yeller glasses around my neck but even that wasn't much better.

What's everyone else doing?

I had them 10 years ago and loved them. I had never had contacts before so I didn't know what to expect.
I had the extended ware, and went to the Dr. every month to have them take out the old and put in the new. ( That was part of the deal. )
Everything was great until we were in Daytona for Bike week and all of a sudden it felt like someone stuck a hot poker in my eye. I had to get Spoiled to take the lens out of my eye for me. I didn't have a pair of glasses with me. Had to ride with one eye closed. Got home and the Dr. said it was a star burst. An ulcer on the eye. Well I can't ware contacts to this day. But I loved them when I had them.

I have been wearing monvision contacts for about 8 years.  I have daily wear lenses that replace every month.  I notice that after about 12 hours that the lenses are really uncomfortable like they need to come out and be cleaned.  I wear either goggles or sunglasses with foam cushions to try to keep wind out of my eyes.

I use to ride with mono-vision contacts but like all contacts, at least the ones I wore, they would float in my eyes when the wind caught them and I would have to stop and blink or rub them back into place. I finally had the mono-vision lasik surgery done and am very pleased with the results. Not for everyone but it works well for me.

I wore contacts years ago and after about two years I developed the above described halos and floating...so it sounds like contacts have not gotten any better since then. Talked briefly with my doctor about the mono vision options but did not think it was a good/safe option for me. If I remember correctly the concept is that one eye is used for distance and the other is used for close up sight...which has to impair your depth perception which in my opinion would not be a desirable compromise while riding.
I wear a pair of Oakley riding glasses with interchangeable lenses. You can get lenses in any color tint and/or reflection. They also come in perscription lenses including bi and tri focals...and you can get transition lenses. A removable foam/rubber eye guard is also included which keeps out any wind. They are not cheap as far as glasses go but a lot cheaper than laser  and very much more comfortable than contacts.

'2 Rose' is spot on about the depth perception. As I have done the glasses, contacts, and now the Lasik, from my perspective the best and clearest vision you will ever have, with corrective action being taken, is with glasses. Since I know that my depth perception has been compromised it is not a hindrance however I find that occasional drops in the eyes makes the clarity better. Everything in life is a compromise and one must make a choice that suits them best.

Not much to add but to confirm yet again about contacts. I have a pair of Wiley-X bifocals with the foam inserts to keep debris away from my eyes. I've tried contacts in many versions but have always just come back to my glasses; has been less hassle than itchy eyes, contact moving in wrong direction, etc. etc. etc.

Maybe one day I'll try the laser surgery; brother did it and it works well for him.

x2 on Lasik. I wore contacts for 31 yrs, started with the Hard Lens, then to soft lens about 15 yrs ago. I tried the mono vision, but they say it takes 3-4 days to get used to. I didn't have the time cause I drive for a living.

Just had Lasik done last Thursday, and that is the way to go. No more cumbersome glasses or contact management. Very nice, especially to ride with...

Thanks for all the reply's everyone.

I guess it's going to be Lasik a pair of Oakley's / Wiley's. This is too much to deal with, not happy with the contacts even at my computer working. Feels like there is no happy medium to compromise on.

The only problem with Lasik is the enhanced need for reading glasses. If you need them occasionally now you will probably need them a lot more afterwards. That won't get better.

Yeah, but it beats the alternative.

I'm an optometrist who fits contacts and does pre and post op lasik exams and would not recommend monovision for a rider. It's not perfect in that you sacrafice some distance vision and a lot of depth perception so judging distances is very compromised. For best vision and depth perception always balance both eyes for distance with contacts, glasses, or lasik.

Can only share my own experience.  Chalk it up as one data point in the "for what it's worth" department.

13 years ago I turned forty.  On that day I suddenly needed glasses; bifocals.  It was the weirdest accurate stereotype I've ever fulfilled.  Used glasses for a few years and decided to try contacts.  It was explained that because of my particular RX that going to contacts would make for monocular vision.

I told the eye doc that I rode.  Then a lot more than now.  The eye doc said I'd "adjust quickly" and it wouldn't "be a big deal."  To this day I think the guy was just trying to sell the extra exam for RX for the contacts and the contacts themselves.  It was awful.  Perhaps not dangerously awful but it was an unsettling experience.  Depth perception was altered.  Perception of closing speeds was altered.  Going up and down from instruments to the road took a moment's calibration.

I tried to acclimate to the change for almost three weeks.  Then I threw away what was left of the contacts and just stayed with glasses.  I see better with them anyway.  At least in the instance of my one data point the doc here was badly mistaken.

I know what's with this 40 crap............ both my wife and I, the same exact thing when we turned 40, we both all of a sudden needed glasses. Yes, really sucking getting old, never thought I'd hear myself say it. Still laughing hard and having fun though!!!!! :drummer: :2vrolijk_06:
