Besides new lifters, what else?
« on: November 17, 2014, 04:31:50 PM »

Although I haven't had any problems yet, I decided to get new lifters.  S&S premium.
The guy from the dealership wants to sell me a new cam.  I told him I like the stock one- so he asks if I want to order a NEW 255 cam.  I said no- just keep the original.  He said the service department wouldn't do the work unless I bought a new cam.  I have about 22,000 mi. on the bike.
I told him that unless there are wear marks on the lobes, I saw no reason for a new cam.  (If indeed there's a need for a new cam, I'll try something different).

Anyway, is there any real reason to replace the valve springs with something better, or the guides or seats?

(I'm also doing the Torrington inner and outer cam bearings, and the latest SE compensator and having the bike dyno tuned).

-Any advice would be much appreciated.

considering the BS the dealer is trying to sell you, I would consider going else where!

The cam should be fine.  Yes the spring are too stiff, but should be OK.  Guides are know to fail, but I would do it once you're ready to spend the money to have the heads done, at which time you may which to change out the cam to best suit the set up of the re-done heads and your riding style

If the lifters were being replaced under warranty I bet the original cam would be fine.  Find another dealer...you'll never be able to trust a thing this shop says.

Was this a parts guy telling you this? It wouldn't be the first time I heard a parts guy tell a story that doesn't jive with what the service department guys know...

Yes, the guy doesn't work in the service department, his title is a "Chrome Consultant".
He's one of the guys who sells you the add on stuff after you've bought a bike.
I'm sure he means well, but I guess he's still learning.  The dealership has a 20% off special going on right now on parts and labor for "performance" stuff.

Maybe that's what I need- a T&A Consultant!
Not really- I'm afraid of diseases. :drink:

Anyway, thanks for the replies.  I'm going to leave the heads alone and just do the lifters and cam bearings and comp.  -Just looking for reliability.

The stock 110" SE bikes seem to host a plethora of them.  ;)

Talk to the service advisor, bet they'll put in new S&S lifters no problem. Now if he/she says the same about cam replacement, then find a new dealer or indy.

That's the truth about if it were a warranty repair.

The stock crank is a durable item. If you decide to upgrade buy a S&S and be done with it,.
A simple cam ( many to choose from and several that shops that do not tune suggest should not be used, Think like car fax, instead lets see the dyno sheet) lifters bee hive springs and you will have a very nice running bike.

If you need cylinder work I would suggest a 113 kit as they have much to offer in both reliability and performance

..............and Suburban HD has plenty of those 113" pistons that they advertise for sale, some outfits do not stock their advertised pistons or other parts for that matter...........

I followed the GMR 113 posts.
If I lived anywhere close to Houston I'd go for it.  A fantastic package.
