GAS
« on: December 11, 2014, 10:44:46 PM »

I brought my 08 home yesterday.  When I rode to work this morning I noticed the check valve was leaking.  Luckily I work less than 2 miles from Longhorn Harley.  I dropped her off to have the valve replaced. (fast forward).  Got home from work, parked her in the garage, went and grabbed something for dinner.  When I came back the garage had a HUGE smell of gas.  I checked Misty over very carefully, but couldn't find any gas.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?  This cannot be normal!

Thanks,
Dan

Check valve?   :-\

That's the first thing I checked....not it.  I used a mag light and looked everywhere, but couldn't find any standing gas, or residual gas leak stains.  I rode in to work again today, so I will check again when I get home.  Hopefully it was just some weird coincidence.

Any chance the tank was full, or over filled?  If so even a little fuel or even vapor out the overflow give a large odor.

It's not uncommon, as noted previously by Twolanerider, to have fuel vapors escape if the tank is full when you park the bike with a hot engine.

What exactly did the dealership do?  If they replaced the check valve and fuel line assembly, then they would have had to remove the fuel tank top plate and fuel pump.  Perhaps they didn't get it sealed properly when reinstalling the top plate.  Whatever it is, if this problem persists you need to get it back to the dealership ASAP.

Thanks Jerry.  I didn't have much gas in it at all.  According to the service guy (at the desk) the seal inside the tank for the check valve had to be replaced.  Sounded like a complete load of BS to me, as the lower O-ring on the check valve is where the gas leak was coming from.  Anyway, the check valve was replaced, the fuel line assembly was not replaced, and the leak was fixed, how they replaced the check valve I do not know.  I was at work.
I have done that work before on other bikes, so I will check everything over when I get a day off.  Until then, Misty sits in the garage, waiting.  UGH!!!

Thanks Twolanerider.  No, there wasn't more than 1/4 tank if I remember correctly.  I wasn't sure if this was even a problem (vapor smell).  I've never experienced it before, but this is on,y my second HD, and I hesitate to count the AMF.   :drink:

There is no gasket on the inside of the tank, so that part of the story doesn't hold water.  More likely what he really meant was the internal O-ring in the valve which seals to the male connector from the external fuel line to the injectors.  Those O-rings have been known to develop leaks over time.  Harley doesn't list them as a separate part.

If they actually did change out the check valve, they would have had to remove the top plate and fuel pump unless they've changed something I don't know about.  The check valve comes as an assembly with a piece of internal fuel line attached.  Look on the repair order for part number 62228-08B, that is the current part number for that check valve and line assy.

GREAT info!  Thanks, Jerry.  I don't have the repair sheet with me, but will take a look at it tonight for sure.  I know they replaced the check valve, because the external piece that you lift to pull the lower line off looks totally different.  I didn't know there was a line inside the tank.  Man, I can't wait to get my repair manual in the mail and start learning this bike.  Drives me nuts to have to rely on the dealership!!!  Thank God for extended warranties!  LOL!

I will post up what I find on the repair order.

You can replace the O-rings without removing the check valve from the tank or the tank from the bike.

Fuel-Tool sells a Check Valve Repair Kit/Tool and O-rings.

I looked at the site the day Misty went to the shop.  I will eventually buy the tool and a kit!

It's been awhile, but I've replaced the o' rings inside the check valve on my tank.  The o' rings are the same as the o' rings between the case/cam plate (at least I'm 99 per cent sure that's where I obtained the o' rings.)  Jim (hd-dude) is who told me about the commonality of the o' rings.  He could verify if my memory is intact or not...

That's my recollection also Scott.  But I've also just matched an o-ring from a decent sized generic o-ring tray and found one that worked.  Done that several times over the years.

Thanks guys....great info!  The guy up near NY that owns fueltool.com sells packs of those O rings too.....the rebuild tool is pricey, but the Orings didn't seem too high.

Rebuild tool to replace the o'rings?  Hmmm....  Didn't use (or need) a tool when I replaced the o'rings in mine.  How about you Twolanerider?
