FIN® GPS Security and Recovery System??
« on: December 31, 2014, 12:50:03 PM »

My HD dealer is really pushing for me to install the FIN GPS Security system on my 2015 SG CVO.  They have lowered the price three different times, each while my bike was in for mods.  Now they are offering to install it for the manufacture cost of $595.  The annual subscription is $59/yr but is included for the first year.  My insurance agent told me that it would save me $15/yr...not really a benefit.

http://www.finditnowusa.com/

It's a pretty cool product but I am having a hard time justifying the cost/benefit...especially since the bike really won't be out of my sight much and I am not sure that there is a high theft risk living in central Iowa.  On the other side, I do want to protect my expensive scoot!

Any opinions to help me make a final decision?   :nixweiss:

If your bike is stolen, do you really want to recover it?  So thieves steal your Street Glide and damage it during the theft or wreck it in a police chase.  Or, by the time the police locate it, it's partially disassembled.  Do you really want it back?  I'd rather have the insurance settlement and start over.

Check out this thread - Find It Now - FIN - Security System DISCOUNT for Limited Time / Qualified Buyers even though that special may longer be available you can contact that vendor and see if he can meet/beat that price if you're interested in the product. You may want to also do a search for FIN and/or Find It Now as there may be some more threads regarding the product.

Good points!  I think that most of the time, you are probably just tracking your adventures on google maps...and the security feature is secondary.   ;)

Given how little damage it takes for the insurance company to total a motorcycle I don't think it is worth the expense either. I had a motorcycle stolen when I was stationed down in Pensacola, FL and the little chit did enough damage breaking the locks and hotwiring the thing to total it let alone the damage he did during the Police chase and subsequent crash. The insurance agent said, back then, that all it takes is a broken fin on the jugs to total a bike due to the expense of repair and parts. I'm just across the river from you and all I do is lock the forks, set the alarm, and at most put on a brake rotor lock. I also put on a small bike cover but that's more to keep the curious from sitting on the bike and protecting the seat from the sun and bird poop.

Selling at dealer cost after repetitive mark downs?  Sounds like the shop is trying to clear some shelf inventory that never moved for them.

I have it and love it! Ever wonder how hard your bike gets ridden when left for repair? I can tell when or how many times it gets moved around at the shop, how fast and where it goes on the test drive. Occasionally I have mine shipped to the west coast for tours. I can track it the whole way and how fast the transport is running if I want. When the transport stops for fuel, I can Google Earth the station. If someone were to bump it or sit on it in a parking lot, I know right then. Yes, any bike can be stolen and torn up. With FIN I get a chance to run out of the hotel and put my pistol in their ear first!

I dont know about your insurance companies, but I assume if mine is stolen and "totaled" they are only going to pay what its worth by the book.  A new bike loses value the moment it leaves the shop.  YES I do want my bike back.  Damaged or not.  Fixing the bike is a hell of a lot less financial burden than trying to make up the difference between book value and what is owed against it / cost to repair.

Very good point that I had not really considered. I'm going to have to check with my insurance company and do some comparative research to see if it's cost effective given the initial financial outlay and annual costs.

To each his/her own.  Yes, insurance is only going to pay current value, not purchase price.  However, I don't want a wrecked, but repaired bike.  I'm also not interested in a stolen, damaged, recovered, but repaired bike.

A wrecked/damaged bike that's covered by insurance should be a good bargaining chip on a trade.  The dealer is going to make money on new parts and labor to repair it, plus the difference between what it's worth on a trade vs what they sell it for...a financial double tap for the dealer.

I don't know about this system but I have seen where Lojack and OnStar have worked quick enough that the vehicle was recovered before it was stripped or damaged.
I have also seen where one bike with Lojack led to a theft ring/chop shop for sport bikes and led to multiple bikes recovered and several arrests.
Too bad this system doesn't work like OnStar where they can shut down the vehicle if police are behind it so it ends pursuits before they get started.

In short, if you are thinking about it call them directly and ask questions.  Nice folks.  Talking to them one day and the guy says "you must have the bike on a charger," then gave me the voltage while it was sitting in my garage. Pretty cool imo. Just DO NOT give your wife the password! It will show EVERY place you go!  :o

Hi Everyone,

I have them on both my wifes bike and mine.  I really enjoy the mapping feature.  I can track every start and stop (when you stop the engine).  It just give me piece of mind.  I do not have the email or text set while it is in my garage.  I do set them when we stay at hotels at night so I can monitor the bikes.  The other feature I like it that it checks in at night, every night.  It turns on from being asleep, sends a signal and then goes back to sleep.

On the 110 anniversary trip I had to leave my by in Milwaukee for repair.  After about 7 days off of the battery the unit shut down.  Once they started working on the bike and connected the battery it sent me a text. A couple of hours later it was going 50 miles an hour.  An hour later I got the call that my bike was ready.  I then monitored it from Milwaukee to California.

If it is stolen I get on a flight home and look for a new ride online to spend my insurance money on.
