Chopped or King Tour Pak
« on: July 18, 2009, 05:34:54 PM »

I wished I had ordered a tour pack when I got the 09 SERG, but I didn't.  Now the dear wife wants something to lean on and the passenger butt rest (as she calls it) isn't cutting it.  Which one to get?  The chopped tour pack (which is all the seem to want to offer for the SERG, or the king tour pack?
I don't take long trips anymore because of the 3 1/2 year old.  I just need a bag for her to lean on and for me to put helmets in.  I will use it to put computer and work stuff in during the week at work, I go from building to building during the day and have to take stuff with me.
I guess the big difference is in the price, but from a functional side, the tour pack holds more but the chopped pack seems to fit the bike better.  Any opinions out there?

Hi I have a chopped tour pack for sale in electric orange. It is on ebay right now if you want to look at it It also has been painted to match the tank lines. The biggest difference in the 2 are that the king pack makes the bike a lot more top heavy, were the chopped did'nt

I suppose one of each isn't an option. Clearly the chopped looks better but the extra room in the king is a real plus as is the full size passenger backrest. BTW, I can only get one 1/2 helmet in the chopped and that's pushing it if I've a bunch of other stuff (always) in it.

If you're actually going to put things in it, get the King.  Plus the backrest is better with the King.

The best comeback that I heard retarding the chopped TP was that it is about as useless as two doors on a car. I have been running chopped TP’s since 2001 and would rather ride without one than fasten a monster jumbotron to the back of my machine.

If mama wants a spot for her hair dryer, tell her to get her own machine; if she pushes back, beg forgiveness and get the King Tour Pac. :)

get the king,,, much more practical.  when you don't need it, take it off..  it's that simple. I had the chopped,  couldn't wait to find someone that wanted it.. I got the king and love having it every time.

I have both - chopped looks better - but the king is practical.

There is not enough difference in height to make a difference in bike handling.
What makes a difference is you can load up the king with what seems as twice as much stuff, and many of us add the luggage rack to pack more crap on it - that makes a handling difference.

Cost wise they are about the same, except for the back rest.

Get the king, your wife will appreciate the backrest, and when you 3 year old is old enough to start riding you will appreciate the backrest.

I too had the same dilema since my wife was insisting on the arm rests and I wanted the more compact look of the chopped version. Based on info found here, I decided to do both. The backrest is a Mustang product I ordered from Drag ($269) and has longer arms than the HD version. According to others, the HD version requires the drilling of six new holes? The Mustang version only required drilling of 2 and was installed by my dealer when my tour pak arrived with no additional cost or complaining.
My 8 year old daughter also rides with me and the added security of the longer arms is a nice feature.

Chopped works for me.

I was at another dealership a week ago while having a new rear tire put on my '08 SERK and at that time planning on doing my upgrade trade at that dealership, but they couldn't get me one.  Okay back to the story.  While walking through the service department, there was a yellow SERG on the lift and it had the chopped tour-pak installed.  It appears to have the same issues that my leather tour-pak on my SERK had.  When you put a straight edge on the front of the pad and down to the seat, there are a couple inches of unusable space that's just lost.  I see the same thing on your picture, copied here.

After looking at the bottom of the chopped tour-pak, it looks like one might be able to relocate some of the holes to offset the tour-pak back a couple inches on the mounting plate.  I bought a Kuryakyn "U" shaped relocation adapter for my SERK leather tour-pak and it gave me 2" or 3" of added room, my choice.  This made a BIG difference on room between the wife and I.

So, does any of this make sense to you?  Do you think that a 2" or 3" move rearward would be doable without an adapter plate?  If a plate is needed, I think our water jet here at work and some 12ga stainless would do the job without any issues in safety.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks.

Dan,

I think I understand.  You're trying to give the passenger a bit more room.  Note that the backrest pad compresses when the BSR leans on it.  I've not had any complaints and seem to have enough room.  I have the felt liner inside the bottom of my TP, I think there's enough roome to simply redrill the bottom of the TP if you wanted to move it back 2" but an adapter plate would work too.  (Probably stronger that way).

Thanks Greg.

Yeah, the pad does compress a bit, but with myself (about 6'-1" @ 274#) and my wife (5'-2" @ %&@#), got to do that to protect myself... We don't have a lot of room between us.  On the SERK it REALLY helps out by doing the move rearward.

When I mount everything up in a few weeks, I'll look at what I can do to offset it back a couple inches.  There must be enough of us "full figured" men to warrant aftermarket guys to come out with adapters to do this.  I've read posts about SEUC guys moving their king tour-paks back a bit too.

Thanks for the information.
