FLHXSE2 Vice Current Stable - Seeking Advice
« on: April 16, 2011, 10:20:16 AM »

Looking for some feedback from the collective wisdom on the forum. I also asked a similar question in the general discussion forum but thought I might get some more insight in this one.  I currently have a 2008 Ultra in Candy Red Sunglo and a 2006 Deluxe. Wife and I travel on the Ultra and use it around town when riding 2-up. I have the Deluxe slammed with an air ride, 21 up front, apes etc. for tooling around town solo. But in all honesty, I rarely ride the Deluxe any more. It sits more than its used. I am also tiring of taking care of 2 bikes...cleaning, insurance, space in the garage, etc. So I have been thinking about trading the Ultra in on a new FLHXSE2 and then selling the Deluxe outright to get down to 1 bike. I have found a dealer that has an orange/black one on order and expects it in a few weeks. I have been back and forth on this idea since last July when Harley first announced the new bikes. For those who have done something similar, any regrets? The Streetglide strikes me as a bike that can tour and cruise and look good while doing it. Just need a detachable tourpak and its good to go. One concern is the passenger comfort. Any feedback from your significant other? My buddy has the suspension on his FLHX and he loves it but I am wondering about the seat. Wife is a little spoiled with the huge Ultra pillow. Any issues with the current 110s? Buddy of mine had his 08 CVO Road King recalled for some issue with the jugs and it was repaired under warranty. Anything on the new ones?

What do you guys think? Good plan? Thanks in advance for the help and feedback!

I've had an o/b SESG since the middle of last August--haven't ridden it yet this year. The weather has not cooperated. I got the tourpak with it. My first bike is an '05 Deluxe that I bought sight unseen on ebay and had shipped to me from halfway across the US. Still have it. Thought I'd never consider selling it as it's my first bike and if the wife ever wanted to ride her own, it's probably low enough for her. When I get the SESG out (hopefully soon), the Deluxe will more than likely see very few miles.

As it stands now, I still don't want to part with it. But what you're saying about the added insurance, storage, and maintenance makes sense--those thoughts are starting to creep into the back of my head, too. I love the lines of the Deluxe, and since it's paid for--I'll continue to think that I'll hold onto it.

I will say that I don't really know how anyone would not be happy with a SESG. It is absolutely great and I can't wait to get it out!

Should add that in between I had a used '09 SG with a Harley upgrade (don't recall the exact model) seat. Wife and I rode about 500 miles out to Sturgis; She hasn't done any long trips yet on the SESG, but said she was happy with the stock seat when I asked her. Huge difference between the SG and the SESG, IMO. Owned the SG just for a few months because I thought they might come out with an o/b SESG and wanted to make sure I liked the model before dropping so much cash on the SE version.

Knock on wood, no engine trouble yet. I did go with the maximum extended warranty because of the electronics and the 110s and some of what I read on this site.

Good luck!

JohnnyRock...thanks for the reply. I thought I would keep the Deluxe when I got the Ultra and I have but each year I ride it less. The wife will not ride on it any more. She just loves riding on the Ultra. Both my bikes are paid for and money is not an issue with getting a new one. I am just tired of caring for 2 bikes and looking for a balance of touring and cruising in 1 bike. Seems like with a detachable tourpak, the CVO Streetglide has it covered in spades. I absolutely love the orange and black color scheme. I always loved the 2004 CVO EG pumpkin.

I also worry about touring on such as nice bike. I usually do one camping trip a year too. I don't worry too much about the Ultra...not sure why I am so concerned about a CVO and my travel habits. I just need to make the move and never look back.

Good luck with your decision, one or two bikes, this is a tough crowd here as many have multiple bikes, sorta like when you were young and had a box of Crayola Crayons.  Had to have one of each color.  Welcome to the site.

Riding an 06 and an 08, any touring model that's 09 or newer will be a huge improvement for you and her.  I went from an 04 Screamin Eagle Electra Glide (I wondered if I would regreat it.....I loved that bike) to a 2010 Screamin Eagle Street Glide.  I've never looked back.  This bike is just so much more.

The seat on the SESG is much more firm than the Ultra Classic....but that's why you can put so many more hours on it without the monkey butt issues.  Any soft seat is great for the first few hours but at the end of a ten or twelve hour day or touring for a week.....there's a price to pay. :nervous:

I've set my SESG up (actually, Jim did the work.....I just come along with the ideas and the check book :nervous:) for long distance touring two up or solo (has a tad bit over 30k miles and it's a 2010!) or the stripped down local solo (no tour pack at all) look.  Click on this link for about 40 pages of pictures and posts on my mods to get some ideas that may help you decide..... http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=40248.0

By the way......the SESG is a great all around versatile bike but that orange and black is bad azz! :2vrolijk_21:

If I couldn't have my 09SEUC or if I could afford a second just for the hell of it bike my choice would be a 2011 SESG in Orange and Black. I think you will be very happy touring on your new SESG.

I sold 2 bikes to buy my O/B Street Glide - 07 Road King & Yamaha MT-01 - best decision I ever made.

Think...new frame/chassis with incredably improved handling and ride, ABS brakes, improved traction with the larger tires and a top of the line bike appearance wise.  When you're at the top of the heap, everything else is back down. :2vrolijk_21:

I definately want ABS. I had a bit of a close call on my 08 and slightly locked the brakes in a panic situation. I didn't go down but it was a wake up call and I have wanted ABS since then.

I know the new frame is an improvement. Last year we did a fly and ride and put about 2000 miles on a 2010 an Electraglide Classic touring Montana and Wyoming. I didn't find the change from my 08 to be that noticable...at least when riding loaded 2-up.

As far as appearance, IMHO, the FLHXSE2 is the best looking Touring bike HD has ever put out. The bike is just right in terms of styling. There is very little I will want to change...lol.
