Boom 1.18.3 2015 01 20
« on: January 20, 2015, 05:25:41 PM »

I just loaded 1.18.3 on my '15 FLHTK.

It loaded up just fine, took about 4-5 minutes. Long enough for me to discover that while the ignition is in accessory, you can push the bottom of the dimmer and hold it for a second or two and make the headlight come on low beam. Press it again to extinguish.

OK, the important things that I found while it's in my garage:

I successfully loaded a trip with 12 points and it pulled it up as one trip. I even ran the simulator for a minute.

Also, the zoom seemed work correctly where the problem was upon boot, and first use of zoom (in or out), it would zoom to max magnification.

So, I call two major advances with this.

Let's see what they broke in the process.

I updated my 2015 FLTRUSE this morning with the 1.18.3 software version.

AVC not working - works now
Auto Dim not working - works now (haven't been through a tunnel yet but it adjusts for different levels of light)
Intermittent PTT not muting music - works now
Time Zone issue - well at least it's the right time for East TN. Hopefully it will adjust correctly when traveling

HD is saying they also up'd the number of waypoints you can put in up to 100!!  Thats great news if it works.
Next question.  Can I use my Mapsource or BaseCamp to load maps onto a drive and then on to the bike??  If not how can I develop maps to use on this thing?   I've already got my Garmin 665 installed on it but I'd like to see if the Boom GPS will work....

Glad they fixed the waypoint issue. Yes you can use Mapsource or Basecamp to load maps onto a drive and import them into your Boom GPS. I am not sure if the latest update fixes this issue but the problem I encountered importing a gpx file into the Boom GPS is that if you make a detour off your route it will keep trying to get you to go back to the route. You are not prompted if you want to recalculate the route, it just does it automatically. Same thing if you have a waypoint on your route and you miss it by even the slightest amount it will continually try to re-route you back to the missed waypoint. I did not see any place in the navigation setup where you can set the recalculation option to manual. The only place you can change from auto calculation to manual is under the traffic setting but it only works for traffic related issues if you have an active route. When I get a chance I will check to see if the auto recalculation is still an issue for a missed waypoint.

I just want to make sure we're all on the same page here.  You can import routes/trips, waypoints, and trips from mapsource or basecamp.  The visual maps and the auto-routing logic associated with it are not transferable to the boom unit.  Those have to be updated from navi-extras.  Any routes that you import will be recalculated in the HD GPS.

I went back and loaded a route from basecamp today into the Boom GPS as a trip.  It had 65 points (destinations) and the Boom GPS handled it just fine.  I had little yellow flags all over the screen!

We are probably on the same page here. When you import a gpx into the BOOM GPS it will recalculate the route based on the BOOM GPS navigation settings and preferences. For example if your route just has a start and end point and your Basecamp is set for a motorcycle when you import it into a GPS device the route will probably not be the same. That's probably why many of us complained so much about the 9 point limitation on the previous software. From your example of the route with 65 waypoints I believe the reason most of us use so many waypoints is so no matter what the destination GPS settings / preferences are the route will basically work the same across GPS devices.

Yep, sounds like we're talking about the same thing.

The route I loaded was about 125 miles long, and is a scenic route down the Mississippi for about half of it.  Unfortunately, No mapset I've ever had wants to follow those roads, or even go down them at all.  They are treated like off-road trails, even though they're paved.  So I have to use a lot of shaping points to force the track where I want it.

I checked my last several years of trips, and 90% of them would have been fine with 9 waypoints.  It's that 10% that would have made things frustrating.

Maybe it's time to try following a "track"?

Sounds like I need to get my owner's manual out for the system and start reading up. I'd hate to get the bike out in another two months and not have it updated.

Installed it on mine today, the auto dimming worked, as well as it not reverting back to the weather band when the ignition is cycled on and off. Don't know about the rest.

Installed tonight, only problem I had was you have to be smart enough to select Media, I wasn't, but as soon as I did it installed. AVC seems to work now, that was all I had a problem with. Don't like the dimmer deal, I want it bright, day and night, but I did check and it works relation to garage overhead lights.

I have installed version 1.18.3 and all seemed in order but now my touch screen is behaving erratically. Sometimes when I press a button on the screen it does not recognize that I am pressing and at other times when I press it it recognizes the command but hangs and it thinks I am pressing continuously. That means that it begins scrolling uncontrollably.

Also I seem to be unable to press the buttons on the left or right hand side of the title bar.

I have not used the bike for a while due to the weather so I cannot be sure that this has been caused by the update or whether my system is faulty. I guess I would want to (re-)calibrate the screen but I cannot find a facility for that.

Anybody else encountered these faults.

Thanks
Vincent

AVC still not working for me after the download of 1.18.3. Rode abot 250 miles yesterday and still have to turn off and on AVC to hear radio at above 60 mph and have to manually turn down volume at stop lights. Also had to turn bike of and on a couple of times to get volume control to work at all.

On the bright side radio works great on my 2013 CVORG with no problems at all.

Guys, I just tried to load this update to my 2015 cvo limited with no success. I put my usb thumb drive in and it comes up with do I want to do the update yes or no. Only the no is highlighted not the yes. So I am unable to hit yes. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I am doing wrong? Also, it says have the bike on accessory, is that with the ignition switch in the unlocked position? Thanks Dan

Maybe. I had to re-format my USB drive, open the downloaded zip folder and then copy to the USB.

Well I downloaded and installed 1.18.3. Zoom seems to work AVC
works so far it is going back to the last source after turn off and on.
So i  built a route from VA to Austin TX using. https://www.myscenicdrives.com/road-trip-planner
It includes 4 stops and about 45 waypoints exported as a Garmin
GPX file to the USB stick and imported to the bike. What i found was that u only need to save the end of ride file and it contains all the info.
So I then did a whereto looked in saved and the file was there picked the file clicked on options and viewed route all was good went back
2 times hit go and loaded the route and it came up on the screen
zoomed out and i could see the complete route on screen. It followed  my waypoints  the mileage and time were correct.
I have not been able to ride yet to see if the fix for missed waypoints works or not. It does look like at last we may be able to use the GPS
with imported routes the way it was meant to be.

Plug in the USB.
Push and hold the "trip trigger" on left switch to get into accessory mode.

The error you mention is exactly what happens when you use the "key" to turn on the ignition.

Went through the drill several times before I figured it out. (I didn't get a manual with the bike - had to wait)  Discovered the "trip trigger" by accident.

Good Luck

Okay tried the trip button, formatted the thumb drive, and transferred the file in the zip folder to the root on the thumb drive.   Put the thumb drive in the sub port, hit the trip switch and the radio and everything comes up but never asks if I want to do a upgrade. Any ideas, dealer tried it was the old update and never got it to work, tried different thumb drives too.  Guess may have a defective usb port.

Guess may have a defective usb port.

Could be the problem as I am not computer savvy and was able to do it.  Even when I hadn't unzipped the file, the radio would at least tell me the file was not recognizable.

I turn on the accessory switch, let the radio boot up, and then put in the thumb drive.  May try that but next trip would be the dealer.  Good luck and let us know what works.

I have tried it 10 times at least, and the dealer did it a few times at the 1000 mile checkup. They could never get it to do it, and I only had it happen once.  I think when it warms up here it is going in for a new port.  I use the trip trigger to turn on the acc. And have the radio both on and off and it hasn't noticed the thumb drive.

Quick format, I think that is usually the one that is the default, but will check that tomorrow.   The dealer was pretty upset too, he called HD and they told him he must be doing something wrong.  I really think it's the port

I'm no computer tech but maybe... When I down loaded the file, I got a file entitled "swdl_boombox6.5GT_1.18.3."  I then opened that file and saw two files, a text document of 1KB and an image file of 838 KB.  I copied only the image file over to the USB stick and then uploaded.  Worked fine.   :2vrolijk_21:

However!  My speed volume control still turns off with the bike and the system will not show text messages.  It says there is an error in syncing the messages.  Any thoughts?    :nixweiss:   Thanks!

What kind of phone do you have? My iPhone will let me read a text, IF I receive it while phone connected. It will not let me scroll through existing text messages. It's just an iPhone compatibility thing.

Samsung Galaxy S5.

I have a friend who has the same problem with his Galaxy S4. Yet, his wife's S4 works fine on the same bike.    :nixweiss:   NOT that one should be reading text messages while on the bike!    :nervous:   I spoke to my salesman who promised to look into it. I'm going to stop by today and see if they have a fix.

Well, I unpaired and paired the phone twice. Turn the bike on, pulled the main fuse, turned the bike back off and on and now it all works. I have no idea why!

Just the larger image file.  The first time I tried to upload both files and got an error message.

I still have to turn the ACV off and then on every time I start the bike.  This may sound like a dumb question, but when you pull the fuse to reset, should the radio be powered up or not?

I don't think that's a dumb question. I think that's an overlooked question. The radio has no moving parts and is essentially, a computer. You wouldn't just pull the plug on your PC at home. So, in an abundance of caution, I turn the radio off. You probably already know that the ignition should be on otherwise the alarm will sound. Turn the ignition off before reinserting the fuse.

I've noticed several people mention two files in the download, but so far I haven't seen anyone say anything about actually opening the small text file to see what it says.  Possibly instructions, or maybe a list of supposed fixes. :nixweiss:   Someone like me would have opened that text file first, before doing anything else, just in case it contained important information pertaining to the update.

I still cannot get the update to go even without the txt file, the trip button turns on the accessories but never see the thumb drive, I took another thumb drive and added a song, it finally seen that one and played the song. The thumb drive I am trying to use for the update is a formatted 64 gig.  Hell is the drive too big??  I'm getting so frustrated.

It could be too large a thumb drive.  I had issues and used an 8 gig and unzipped the files on the drive.   All worked after that.   Go figure.

Okay maybe a secret is smaller is better, used a 16 gig thumb drive and it took it.  So secret use a 8-16 gig thumb drive.

Only thing I have noticed that changed on mine is the intercom. I can't hear myself when I speak. But it is clearer and no wind noise. My wife says it's much better. I also can't hear myself when on the phone. Kinda make me feel like I need to talk louder than normal.
Also the zoom feature in the nav and weather map works like it's supposed too now.

Got an apologetic call from my dealer re the speed volume control.  H-D admits that for the CVO bikes,  the issue is not yet fixed.  It has to do with the external amp interface.  They're working on a software solution.  (So they said.)

Update to my original post. I use my headset most of the time so the AVC seemed to work. When I switch to the external speakers as others have mentioned it does not work unless you go into the setting and turn it off and then back on at each start-up. The time zone issue does not work either. The clock displays EST which is correct for my area but when I cross the state line into Georgia where it is EST as well the time jumps an hour ahead.

Big Lew,
Have you had a chance to fool with the 6.5 Nav much? Reason I'm asking is because I found a waypoint/location issue. When you import a route the 6.5 Nav puts all of the waypoints/locations into the Saved. The issue I found is that on some of the waypoints/locations when you go into the Saved it won't let you select them. So if you wanted to route to that waypoint/location without loading the Trip you can't or if you want to delete it, same thing, you can't. What I found is that if the waypoint/location is created that does not have a physical address and just uses coordinates it won't let you select it or remove it. I was able to determine the work around to fix this issue that appears to be in the software on the 6.5 Nav. If you open the gpx file in a mapping software and select the properties of a waypoint/location that does not have a physical address the Notes/Comments for it is blank. From what I can tell the 6.5 Nav uses the Notes/Comments for the Title Bar display on the screen so if it is blank this is making the selection fail. Take that same waypoint/location and add a name/description in the Notes/Comments property using your mapping software. Import it back into the 6.5 Nav and when you select the waypoint/location it will now let you select it and whatever you put in the Notes/Comments will be displayed in the Title Bar on the screen. Any of the waypoint/locations that fit this scenario will be duplicated in the Saved list when you import the gpx file. The only way that I found to remove them was to do a factory reset and that is a pain because the Save settings and Restore settings does not work. You have to manually change all the preferences back to what they were before you did the reset.

I've not been able to use this beyond powering up and loading a trip.  There's just been too much snow.  I can't even power it up right now because I have the bike torn apart changing the bars.

I understand what you're saying about not being able to select points to delete them.  I had a similar issue when I loaded duplicates and had to do a reset.   Have you tried deleting the trip to see if that will delete the associated points?

Yes I have tried. Deleting the trip does not remove any of the points associated with it. I have contacted HD Customer service several times about this issue and they just don't seem to grasp what I am trying to explain to them. In both cases they have referred me to page 162 of the Boom audio manual at which point I explain to them that I can't select the waypoint to edit it or delete it (I believe they think I am an idiot that can't follow instructions). The work around I described works fine but ultimately they need to fix the underlying software issue. I have a good friend that I ride with often that is a retired HD Regional Service Rep. He is going to set up a call for me with someone technical at the MoCo that would be willing to listen and understand the issue.

That has happened to me also but after I avoided commas, apostrophes, hyphens and other characters the problem was resolved for me. I think these characters cause a corruption and only a reset resolved that.

I noticed the same things, wife didn't like not hearing herself at first. Haven't used the phone yet. Did have a new issue pop up and that was the whole Boombox locked up downtown San Antonio trying to get to the hotel, GPS display froze, kept playing music but could not get it to respond to any input, nor could I turn it off. Everything was fine after shutting bike off and turning back on.
Only other thing I noticed was it seemed it took a long time to sync bluetooth with my phone. Oh well fix one break another.

Yesterday had another issues pop up. While playing music from my phone, the music would stop and the only thing that started it again was to press the PTT, so I got to watching and noticed the CB icon light up like someone broke in but nothing had and squelch high enough to prevent noise problems. Anybody else noticed this?

Great find! It explains how to put the route in without using up all the stored waypoints.

They say 8gig or larger, but I did find that if over a 16gig it would not see it,  I got a 16 gig thumb drive and it worked fine.

Been using it a few years now. Sometimes it can be a little stupid for updates but it is easy to use.

Hi Guys,

Will this update work if you download it onto a mac and then load it into your CVO or does it have to be downloaded onto a windows machine.
Thanks

On the home pc. With the old 660, I just plugged it into the pc and then transferred the maps.

Using the free version. Never bother to check out the advantages of the paid version. Free one works just fine for me. It gives you a choice of Tom Tom or Garmin to plan for. You select your device in one of the drop down menus.

I think you can download it on the apple then you have to unzip it and copy the ISO file on  to a USB stick formatted in FAT32

Thanks for all the posts guys. Installed my update and will now spend the morning seeing what actually changed.

Also giving the my scenic drives a go to see how that performs.

Cheers

Did a 250 mile loop through the swamp country bayous today mainly to see how the GPS planning works and generally get my head around the Boom Audio system. Firstly and most importantly the ride was great. There were a mixture of roads and conditions but thankfully no rain, although it was a tad brisk.  IMHO the 15 SERGU handles better than any Harley I have previously ridden that has not had thousands pumped into it.

Had no problems loading myscenic drive files into the Boom (thanks for the tips) and they even looked good to go but as soon as I went to leave they froze up with a flashing icon on the right side of the screen which I am yet to look up. I did the whole black start thing several times before giving it the flick. It works fine as a GPS if you simply put in the next place you want to go. Also had issues with using the phone and then going back to NAV or music. Basically had to turn it off and back on a few times to get it to work. AVC does not work for me regardless of how many times I turn the radio off and on. Unsure if it is supposed to but I did like the feature that lets the intercom work as well as providing NAV directions when you have the radio off.

Must admit operator error contributed to some of the issues I had with it today. Its all new and different and 'complicated' by comparison to what I have been used to. I have no doubt that with experience I will get better with the boom and there will be more 'fixes' from the MoCo.  I think may give the HD ride planner a go tomorrow and if I have no joy with that I will try the tyre software. More practice required, I believe I will head to Floridah for bit.

Cheers

How many points did you enter on the route? Did the route load as a destination at all? Thanks for the write up and even admitting operator error

That's me, thanks...  I've been thinking about redoing it a little better and maybe shortening the length. I've also thought about doing a video on each of the Rider Planner, Tyre and Basecamp.

I'm not very tech savvy so I really appreciated the information video. I'm using a MAC so that may be part of my problem. I saved 3 routes on Harley Ride Planner and transferred them to GPX file then got them on my 4G stick--it lists my 3 routes when I open it. However, when I wanted to look at the route on the stick, it asks what application I want to use to open it. What application or how do I choose an application to see the route on the stick? I plugged it in to my USB port and got it on the Boom system. But it seemed to double the routes I saved; it showed hdRoute.gpx then _hdRoute.gpx, then hdRoute(1).gpx then _hdRoute(1).gpx etc. I had named each route on Ride Planner before I saved it but the saved name doesn't show on the stick--it only shows as these gpx files. When I select hdRoute.gpx, it brings up the named route as I saved it then gives me the 'select all' option plus the other options. I don't know why all these other options or what I'm supposed to select to get my route saved. Also, how do I preview a saved route on the Boom. Any help will be appreciated, I'll even take a private email or a private tutor!  Thanks.

Download Base Camp for program to view files. I too have loaded a route in bike and got double locations nw for HOME or TERRY'S. I think if route already in bike with some locations you need to not select all, but to add the new locations only.
