it's still SPOOKY, splitting lanes on a Bagger, also, most freeway's here in So-Cally have been narrowed down additonal 1'. :sweatdrop:. Sort of makes the old number 2 hole pucker up.........

Really?  Why would they narrow a lane by a foot?  Seems to me that some of the larger vehicles - the big trucks/escalades/hummers etc.  barely fit in a lane as it is.

The lanes were narrowed to gain room for the Car-Pool Lanes. You can't take an existing lane and make it a Car-Pool lane, just another law on the California books.

Couldn't ride any other way. I won't sit in trafffic on the bike. Legal or not. Spiderman's right though. There's a right way to do it, although there are no guarantees in life. Cover your brakes and pay careful attention. You get used to seeing cage's moves. I loved it out in CA. They are used to the bikes. Splitting lanes at 90 and 100 was fun! But beating traffic jams is priceless. Just be careful out there boys! ;)

I swear Terry had us lane splitting in Atlanta............he had us doing 100+.....any way we could get through that traffic. :huepfenlol2:  Come on Terry, fess up........we were lane splitting.  Or maybe it was just me, Andy and Jon trying to keep up with you, so we had to lane split. :nixweiss:  We did it in most of the large cities all the way across country......it's just second nature for us.  It never occurs to me that it might be illegal in other states.  Kind of like a right turn on a red, after you stop.......I guess that's illegal still in some states, but I do it every where.  Old habits are hard to break.

Naw, man...we weren't lane splitting.  I was just taking advantage of "openings" in the traffic... :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Better late than never on a post...Having ridden with Hoist I can express he is spot on here.  I have lane split on small occasions in the past, but never like Hogasm and I went up North.  After that trip, it has become a way of life.

I do not believe we would have ever made it to Hoist's home without it...Heavy Rain, Friday night, Long Island Expressway leaving Manhattan...you do the math!!!

...I don't know if its already been said but its legal for two vehicles to occupy the same lane in California. I'm pretty sure thats what the motorcycle DMV hand book says. Its legal as long as you are not going so many mile per hour faster than the cage traffic. I'll look it up. Doc

It may be legal, but I still believe it's not a terribly bright thing to do.

BTW, how about if the two vehicles are going in opposite directions? :nervous:

Like BB said its part of traffic courtesy,  if they see or hear you coming the cages will pull over for you and we usually give the driver a wave showing our appreciation. The old saying that loud pipes save lives really applies when lane splitting.  :2vrolijk_21: Doc

I found out lane splitting was legal in Mexico by a friendly local that spoke english well.  It saved me a lot of pain by allowing me to slowly and carefully going to the front of miles of backed up traffic at the border crossing.  I think the guy who told me felt sorry for me after noticing my discomfort sitting in line on my 2-cylinder barbeque pit.  :sweatdrop:

Glad you brought that up. It seems when you are on a Harley the sidewalk/street venders will clear a way for you to the front of the line. The Mexican's don't know if there is a helmet law in Baja, but encourage you to wear one on the toll roads. Doc

BB, I can't handle coming back through TJ. I'd rather head south to Encenada and take the road to Tecate and do a little wine tasting on the way. The border at Tecate is usually wide open and easy to cross. Since it's a small company town it doesn't draw much of a crowd and the road home from there, as you know, is like desert after a great weekend in Mexico.  Doc
