Lane Splitting
« on: November 08, 2007, 04:51:14 PM »

Here's a little statement that us left-coasters have known for years.  Quoted from Motorcyclecruiser.com, The Deadly Dozen: 12 Motorcycle Safety Myths and Misconceptions,

"Myth 10: It's Better to Stay in Your Lane than Split Lanes

In most parts of the world, motorcycles split lanes all the time, everywhere traffic is heavy. Here in the U.S., people often act as if lane-splitting is insane. But when someone actually studied it in the only place in the U.S. where it's legal (California), they discovered it's actually slightly safer than staying in the lane in heavy, slow-moving traffic. Still many motorcyclists berate others who do it, when they should in fact be endorsing it."

Amen to that.

The fact that it's legal does not mean that all should or do agree with the law.  Mostly people disagree with laws that condemn an act, such as smoking bans, but look at abortion -- it has to be the most widely polarized debate our country has ever seen, and it is "legal".

Part way down the page:

http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/answers.html

If memory serves correctly from a public safety forum it would be more accurate to say that it is not illegal to split lanes in California.  But that's nearly always the case with things that aren't illegal.

Thank god we don't have to have laws that say what we're allowed to do.  That would put the obligation on the citizenry even more than it already it is.  The laws say what we can't do, not what we can.  And there's already enough of them saying what we can't.

Perhaps the cage drivers in California are accustomed to bikes lane splitting and so look for it.  It would make me as nervous as a whore in church... :nervous:

If you try it in Alabama (it is illegal here), somebody in a 68 Buick landbarge will open their car door on you, or spit tobacco juice on you, or thump a cigarette butt in your lap as you go by.... ;D ;)

It's legal Dave.  Being a member of both ABATE and MMA, a few years back I was pretty actively involved in the PAC (political action committee).  When a bill was introduced to prohibit lane splitting, we thought it was something that we were going to have to spend time and money to fight.

But to our surprise, the CHP came to the rescue...........they lobbied against the bill and did the foot work for us.  The bill never made it.  In certain areas of Calif. lane splitting is a way of life.  Where you might spend an hour to travel fifteen or twenty miles, you couldn't do that on a mototcycle in 100 plus degree weather.  We often see the CHP lane splitting, too.  I've followed them through on more than one occassion.

Terry the cage drivers in California are very accepting of it. Many will shift over in their lane a bit to let you through. If someone takes exception - - - bet the farm they've got a southern states plate on the vehicle. Don't know why as my experiences with all you Rebs is nothin but positive, but then again y'all are biker Rebs and that's a HUGE difference isn't it.

By the way, as Big Daddy and other's who've never ridden California style will tell you after their first experience - - the only thing better than splittin lanes a 100mph is sex with a good woman.  ;)
B B

;D ;D  Yep, the cage drivers around here all think they are the Allisons...they resent somebody passing them.  The interstates here are like being in a stock car race...better be on your toes at all times.

I'll have to get out there and practice lane splitting...best I can do around here is on rare occasions, get on the shoulder for a minute or two at a time.  Even then, folks will cut you off if they see you coming. :nixweiss:

There's never a reason for lane splitting here.  A traffic jam in western NY is having to do under the speed limit.  I was tempted to split over the summer on a 90 degree day when I rode my bike to NY city.  After 5 hours in the saddle I hit stop and go traffic 60 miles away.  The heat was unbearable but I stayed put and turned the bike off a few times.  I was passed by a couple crotch rockets that split the lane.  It was a tough situation, on looking back I wished I would've but I was glad I didn't.
