Rider having Surgery due to medical problem
« on: April 04, 2012, 07:38:04 PM »

Well Members,
Age finally caught up with me. As of the first week of March, a Meniere's Disease attack took out my hearing. After one ENT with two  visits confirmed what happened, my hearing loss is approximately 90%.  On May 07, 2012 another ENT, that does Cochlear Implants, will have a consultation with me on the outcome of such a procedure. Meanwhile, its a quiet world with a lot of silent TV. i don't dare ride, it affects balance as well. Till I get use to using eyes as ears, that is. :(

George sorry to read about your hearing, but 90% of everything said isn't worth listening too.  I hope you can get the Cochlear Implants.

I hope that the implant option is available to you and that your hearing is improved.  I can still hear but with a constant roar.  God bless you.

Thank you Jock, I remember that Photo. Those were great times and I hope Judy and I will enjoy more of them with you soon.
The September Move from Maryland to North Carolina had taken its' toll on both of us. Judy with her medication requirements and me, well, I can qualify as a fire fighter. I had many situations to control. Now a new one. Thank you for the Prayers.

This is a followup. Since the Meniere's Attack in the first week of March, there have been some unusual side effects(?). My psychology has taken a turn for the worst in behavior patterns that is not my normal patterns. The Disease will reveal how solid and stable the mindset is constructed. Just a note for any one who wishes to jump into one of these. ::) ::)

As of this post, Hearing has been a real challenge, wears the relationship a tad. Almost can "hear" with my eyes. Joking of course.
Will update as time goes by. ;) 8)

Well, a new update.
When it rains, it pours. The home front took a hit, the heat pump to the home went out. Went into $$$$$ to correct the problem and had to put the second ENT on hold to July( next available appointment). Nature is healing the impact of hearing, but not by much. Thank you for your support. :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

George, sorry this has happened. This has had a major impact on your life and will continue to impact you in the future. Losing it, becoming impatient, getting angry, feeling sorry for yourself, etc. are all normal reactions to tragic events. The strengths of you and yours will get all of you through this in time.

I'm sure all in the CVO family are hoping the best for you as you struggle through this tough time and we're all looking forward to the days when you can again start doing the things you enjoy most. We are all just a keystroke away and hope you continue to communicate with us even if your riding is temporarily on hold.

Be patient and take care of yourself.

Don

DDavidson, thank you for the words of camaraderie. They are greatly appreciated. There's a lot on the "plate" now. And a about to be 70 yr old mind to handle it.:) :2vrolijk_21:

Update: To any one interested, on September 12, 2012 the left ear received a cochlear implant to aid in hearing. There has been two sessions with an audiologist to get the global frequency map to aid the recipient in hearing. This technology is intriguing, but is not as good as riding my Harley. Oh! The balance is coming back as well. :apple: :jalapeno: :cucumber: :pineapple: :pepper: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

My prayers for your continued successes!  I hope they can restore enough of your hearing that you can enjoy life.  God be with you and your family.

dlaws01,
Thank you for your prayers. The hearing had been restored to the left ear that went south in 1996. I can hear well, but tonal quality needs to be improved. That ear had a loss of 92%, now is come back to approximately 8% loss. And God be with you and your family.

Robmay,
Thank you, It will take time to have tonal quality for hearing. I think this is a new technology for them. I'm using past audio and signal conditioning experience to aid them.

New updated;
October 29 will be round three with the Audiologist to get the Global Frequency map adjusted for optimal tonal quality and speech understanding.
Then...... I get to see the surgeon that did the implant, I think the darn thing moved under my skin while sleeping.  The receiver is a magnetic coupling device with a rf link that receives its' power and audio information from the outside DSP( a microcomputer with algorithms that controls everything). i don't think this will be my last session for a while. There will be more sessions.

For the Tech buffs;
The DSP will control and give the exciting energy to 7 electrodes in the Cochlea in 7 known frequency sections of the Cochlea.
The Frequency range of the DSP, I've been told, is 150 Hz to 8.5 Khz. I think I have heard a Higher piercing tone,  10 Khz???? maybe?
The input source is a controlled microphone in the forward part of the ear ornament. So is the driving amplifier to give loudness or softness to the hearing. This is done with a smart remote.

As I learn more, I will pass it on.   :coolblue:

hogasm,
Yes, this is fantastic for the left ear, which hasn't worked since 1996.
On the question of 2 wheels, it was recommended to check balance issues that come with Meniere's Disease. I think since 1996, I have been compensating for the lost of the left ear. I've tested the balance in the garage with the CVO running. I think it is manageable. The surgeon thinks I can get a handle on the balance. This was before the Sept. 12th surgery.
Great to "hear" from you.  :drink:  :drink:  :2vrolijk_21:

Mike,
Thank you for your prayers, they have been appreciated. So far, this has been a battle that took exteme measures to correct. Now I have a "bionic ear" due to the implant.

Update: Conferred with the surgeon, implant receptacle didn't move. that was great news.
The third tuning improved the tonal quality,but, it is still not a normal sounding quality. There are parameters' to consider.

For the Tech Buffs;

Incorrect on the number of electrodes, there are 12 instead of 7.
They do not handle frequency as expected. Each electrode is assigned in a logarithmic fashion than in linear fashion in the set of frequencies that it transmit to the Cochlear. This medical marvel has not been explored to gain maximum clarity in speech recognition to the human brain.  They are still learning at UNC Chapel Hill, NC.
