Red Line .... You Guys were Right on
« on: August 02, 2009, 01:08:50 AM »

On a 2007 CVO Road King (110) based on advise from forum (thank you) had my local shop swap out the tran and primary oil to red line - shock proof.  Wow.  I can not tell you how well and smooth the bike shifts and performs.   Next oil change Im going Red Line for the engine as well.   Needless to say, wanted to comment its worth it in these engines.

Amazing that a particular oil brand can make this much difference isn't it ?
Don't wait too long to do the engine oil ---- it is a major improvement !!

At what mileage do you change the primary and gearbox? I have been using Amsoil. But tough to get with no local dealers; have to mail order. Thinking about switching to Redline as it is available locally.

I do the engine oil, primary and spark plugs every 5000 miles and the gear box and air cleaner every 10000.

Will my HD dealer install these oils if I request them?
Or do I have to buy them for someone else?

Thank you.

www.bsrproducts.com

This place for me is like a big toy store.

I could spend some money there.

Some dealers will allow you to bring your own fluids in to be installed and some will not... it's up to the individual dealer. Some dealers sell other brands of oils (other then the MoCo brands), and some don't.... again it's up to the individual dealer.

The same here for the shifting.  Redline is great!   :2vrolijk_21:

By the way I just called my dealer and told them I was going to bring my own fluids and they said that it would be fine.

been using mobil 1 for sometime now because it is readily availible and thought all top of the line synthetics were comparable. i had mobil1 v-twin in the primary and engine, the mobil 1 gear oil in the tranny.  at the suggestion of someone i ordered a case of the redline 20-50w motor oil,  3qts of mtl primary, and 2 qts of shockproof.   put the mtl in primary and shockproof in tranny yesterday,  took it for the obligatory test ride. WOW! :2vrolijk_21: never knew my serg could be operate so smooth.  if you haven't tried it, you need to. i'm sold on the redline products and will do the engine oil soon. you're missing out if not using redline products.

Hate to be the odd man out here, but in my stock 2010 Ultra I didn't notice any difference really. Used the same setup as Chip (SBB). The tranny is different in the 10 though. Smooth already and no 5th gear noise at all due to the new cut.

YUP ! Throw me in on the Red Line accolades. Only thing with me is i am old school and it takes me a while to change my mind on certain things. That said, I still worry about topping off the engine oil when needed like on really long trips so rather than carry oil for that purpose i would rather stop and get Mobil1 V-Twin on the road. At some point in the future i may discover the futility of that method and cary Red Line around with me. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

As far as the Tranny and Primary oils.... WOW!  I was so impressed i immedietly drained my Shovelhead and replaced with Red Line! The only thing i noticed there i would change is use Light Weight ShockProof. The Old style Ratchet Top is a bit sluggish and it is too easy to hit the false neutral between 3rd and fouth. (OK .... don't give me grief about the Old School comparison !!!!)

tomorrow is my big day. talked with Rocky Mount Harley and they are fine with me bringing the REDLINE PRODUCT. they have heard some good results with it, but haven't done any change outs themselves. i am doing the total package. it's 125 miles down there from my house and my lady and i plan on riding south from there, so it really should be a good breakin. i'll give y'all an update, when we get back

Well I can say I have a totally different motorcycle since I put the Redline in. The clutch is awesome and the tranny shifts like butter!! I need to get re-trained riding Kasper because of the smooth clutch and Tranny!! ITS WAY TO EASY!!!

I agree, changed mine over to Redline right before we went to Myrtle Beach last month, I'm sold on it, Appox. 850 miles of 70+ mph on the interstate and 2 or 300 miles running around the Grand Strand, did not use a drop of oil, Once the tranny warms up all but got rid of the clunk and the 5th gear whinning.

Think the first time i heard about Redline was in a post by SBB, So thanks man.  :2vrolijk_21:

OK, religion, politics, and oil products are difficult topics to tackle.  I'm not from the "show me" state but show me.  Which motor oil gives me the best wear protection and cooler running temps :nixweiss:  Same for gear and crank case.  IMO all synthetics, ah...........................I'm going to do an extensive online search for unbiased, appropriate, real world test results.  Hell, I'm a doctor not an oil chemist  ;D

MKW, I was just like you asking questions about different oils in my Primary and Tranny and all I kept getting was a picture of Redline products. I finally ordered the Redline Shockproof for the tranny and the Redline Primary fluid and now I don't have anymore questions. Best product I have ever used in the P & T. I do run Amsoil in my motor and I have been totally satisfied with that product also. Now I just ride and enjoy the Great Performance!! 8) 8)

Thanks DESERTBEAR54.  After my initial break-in I'm going to run Redline in the primary and trans to compare.  Still considering other candidates for the motor.  More to follow.............................

Guess I'm the turd in the punch bowl. I use single weight "shell rotella" in the engine, the thickness depending on the weather with a KN oil filter. The trans gets 75w90 in the winter and 75w140 in the summer. The primary works best with automatic transmission fluid. Currently ford type F. The Harley engine is rather forgiving of engine oil, but modern automotive oil is short on extreme pressure additives due to catalytic converters. This is why I use diesel oil as called for in the harley manual. I ride so much that after 100,000 miles I can rebuild an engine cheaper than the cost of "high dollar" oil changes.

Mark,

If you really want to find analysis on the viscosity breakdown and other property specific information there are some pretty good threads here, like this one:

In the end I just PM'd OldLefty and asked what he used.  Generally what I've found is that most of the products we debate here are superior and only marginally different.

Redline Heavy shockproof in the Tranny helping find neutral, and getting rid of noises or the clunk won't show up in the oil analysis though.  You just have to read the threads to know that most people do report that it fixes those issues.

A bunch of guys here will also tell you to just run ATF in the primary.

I've got my own plan for engine oil, but personally don't see anything wrong with Mobile 1 as it has the same base as Amsoil, but is missing just a bit of the additive package, and performs similarly in analysis.  Generally it will get changed more often than is needed as well.
