Diamond cut on 110
« on: March 27, 2011, 07:24:13 PM »

Anyone had their heads diamond cut on their 110, I'm going to have mine done by Diamond Heads out of Navada. Their site says it reduces heating by 12%
Opinions?

Diamond cutting can certainly make for a unique look....but I'd be a bit skeptical about 12% reduced heat.   ???

Not sure how diamond cutting would reduce heat but I agree it makes the heads look different. Post some pics if you get it done.

I am sure their claim is more surface area...  But I think their marketing manager had a meeting...  and well, you know those marketing folks... :P

Also couldn't be that they couldn't trademark a "process to make it look cook" but they could a "machining process to improve cooling on an air cooled engine."  I still think it's chickenchit they try to enforce their desired monopoly on the ability to stand behind a machine tool.

The diamond cutting is definitely pretty.  But it needs something behind it for contrast to really make it pop.  The granite or black engines look great.  Of if one has a silver motor he can add a bit of color for contrast.  I'd not do it on a silver engine though.  Just doesn't stand out much.

I did mine myself on the blue bike. Took a dremel tool and a cone shaped bit 4 hours to do it with alot of breaks :drink:

It is not symmetrical but unless you get so close as to burn your nose, you can't tell any difference to ones that Diamond heads does on their machine.

Oh yea and once you realize how easy it is...don't advertise it for others because DH will file suit against you....with a vengeance....even if you don't call it diamond cutting

It's true.  They be ass-hole-ish about protecting their "right" stand at a machine tool and make shavings.  Any vendor that will behave that way is a vendor I'd not trust to be a stand-up guy after the fact if something wasn't right.  That part of their behavior is enough to keep them from ever getting my money again.

Think I'd watch eBay or hit up a shop for some junk heads or cylinders to practice on first.  Has to be some "feel" or technique to master and it'd be nice to master that on sacrificial parts before moving to the real thing.
