New Shop Suggestions
« on: September 17, 2014, 02:36:29 PM »

Just started a project that I have waited for a long time.  Finally got to build my shop and now need some suggestions on how I need to complete the inside.  Didn't have a lot of real estate to build on, so the shop itself is 24' x 28'.  I have got the outside finished except for the paint,  and now I am starting the inside process.  I have almost completed the electrical and would like some suggestions on how to finish the inside.  I have installed 20 amp outlets every 4' around the inside.  With 2 circuits in the ceiling at one end.  Not sure on how I need to do the air lines from air compressor.  I have included some pictures of the events that have gone on and will update as I move further into the build.  Again hit me with suggestions on handy ideas because since I have waited so long,  I want to make sure I do it right.  Thanks to All

Jimmy, very nice!

I know it's just me, but with the roof pitch you have, I would have used a vaulted truss in it to allow for a higher center ceiling.  If you're not into cars, this makes no difference at all.  If you are a car guy, a four post hoist works well with the vaulted trusses.  Some of the new four post hoists are on rollers and you can move them off to the side or way to the back and out of the way.

You've done all the wiring that I would have done, very similar to my shop I built in MI many years ago.

Against all recommendations, I ran 1" schedule 40 PVC around my upper wall and placed drops a couple places along each side with water traps at the bottoms of each.  I ran rubber hose from my 2-stage compressor to the main bulkhead to the PVC on the wall to cut down vibration.  This worked very well and was inexpensive to install.  I did this back in '98 and the current owner is still going strong with the same air plumbing.

The reason they don't recommend PVC, even with a rating of 300 psi, is that if it fails it can be a catastrophic failure versus just a split steel fitting that blows air.  Although I did have two leaks that I had to repair, but again, it was just a cut with the cutter and reglue and go.

Some of the guys have also been inlaying their cycle lift into the floor so the floor is a smooth surface.

Keep in mind that wall space goes very fast and plan ahead for cabinets and work benches etc.

You're going to love your new shop.

Great job...

I did my air as Dan did. Had several people advise against it, been up 12 yrs w/o a failure and sch40 is much easier to work with than steel. I used 3/4" and it works fine. A friend of mine put a automatic hose reel over his compressor w/100ft of hose and spent about 1/2 what I did. Hose reaches everywhere.

The PVC for the air may work great, but IF you are in an area that requires permits and inspections make sure to check your building codes, both local, state and national. If your out in the country and can build what you want, then no worries.

looks great.  nothing better than a large garage for all the stuff.  Question, what are you planning on doing for the floor.  I went with a commercial grade poly-something and it has held up great.

In my case the barn/shop was already built.  I did the electrical and since it has a 16 foot ceiling it had 2 large vertical beams that I was able to mount a swingarm with a wench that comes in handy when you need an extra hand.  I used the other beam to drop some dedicated outlets in 110 & 220 volts, I also installed the air drop with a regulator to control the air pressure.   I think Dan nailed as the floor space disappears quickly so wall mounted items need to be planned prior to installation.  It takes a lot of realistate once you put in your lift, jack and tool boxes.  I converted the horse stalls which were adjacent to the garage section and made it into a large spay booth, office and yes a bathroom.  Your shop looks good and with the help from your brothers & sisters on this site how can you go wrong.

Nice project

T,

I plan on putting down an Epoxy Coating with Paint flakes to give it that marble look.  I have also had a decal printed to install at the front entrance of the shop.  Tried finding one of these in a large scale but had no luck.  One day I happened to notice the SE emblem on my bike and thought that would be a great emblem to have blown up and make a decal out of it.  Well that's what I did,  it is 5' wide, and it really looks great,  can't wait to put it down on the floor and clear over it,  but got some walls and ceiling to take care of before I get to the floor.  I have added a picture of the decal I had made.  The decal has a impressive 3D effect.  It looks like it's 3 inches deep in places.

I took 5/8" T-111 treated plywood and cut the sheets in half to make a 48" tall wainscoting. Then used 5/8" sheet rock from the wainscoting to the ceiling. Chair rail and base trim is just a simple 1x4.
1" pex lines with 3/4" drops for the air lines with a regulator and filter at each drop. Connection from air compressor to 1"pex is a flexible hydraulic hose to reduce vibration.

You can never have enough lighting and receptacles. Just when you think you have enough you would wish you added more.

Half bath if you can. Remember you can pump it if you don't have the fall. Sometimes it is easier to pump. Mine has been that way for 14 years.

Real nice shop.
My plan is to have a 30x50 built next spring if everything goes right.
Can't seem to get a cement contractor to give an estimate or even an idea of how much it would cost for a 40'x80'x4" pad.
I'm going to pipe in air, water, a full bathroom and a couple of drains in the floor with a high enough roof for a finished second floor.

we got a 30x40 I did a big job on about 5 years ago, while on the electrical I wired in everything for A/C furnace thermostat, radient heaters, three phase phase converter, electric water heater, cieling fans, lots of 220, I tried to think of every thing to make my life easier as it grows, I still dont have the A/C or furnace in that one or the water heater but because I was covering the walls with metal I wanted all the wire I could think of in there so now adding these things is easy the wires are there where they all need be. we just built a 42x62 building and I'm doing a similar deal to it, the breakers and wireing is in for cieling fans ac furnace, water heater, 100-50-30 amp 220, rv plug for both 30 and 50 amp, garage door openers both buildings the wire is in and hot, makes it easier later. of course theres nothing wrong with running it exposed later, just the way I kinda got that part over with, also put conduit from the house to both buildings thru the slabs for tv computer wires etc and water 4' deep from the house thru the slabs to both buildings. dont forget 30-50 anp rv plugs and 110 plugs outside.

So lucky, this is my dream. Up here in Canada the rates to build something like this would be around $45,000  :nervous: I have to keep saving as I am not at all a construction guy.   Supper nice space though.

Looking great! :2vrolijk_21: Maybe I'm too late, but we all know how noisy compressors are. I was going to suggest you build a little enclosure outside for it or possibly hide it in the attic so you don't hear it as much. A nice exhaust fan is something most forget about and wish they had later down the road. Also, since we are spending your money .... big screen tv, nice stereo with surround and a fridge for cold beverages.

I think I would add 3 more rows of lighting, you just can't have enough lights in my opinion.  You could also turn portions of your walls in to fold down work tables, especially if going with the plywood route.  Although you would need to go 3/4 for the tables.  These can come in very handy.  I did this in my wood working shop and behind them was a mounted roll of paper to cover the work table.  Someone mentioned an exhaust fan, these are nice when working with chemicals and its cold out.  I would have a walk through door too, so your not always have to open the big garage doors.  Personally I would have went with one big door vs two doors.  It is just easier to work around a bigger door.  Have some outlets high and some low, to late now but a couple in the middle of the floor are nice to have.  But you could still put some in the ceiling.  Having compressed air outlet is nice, but unless you are working with impact tools or woord working tools you likely dont need anything bigger than a pancake compressor.  I have always found a wash basin to be useful, I drained mine outside but that depends on where you live.  If you put cabinets on the walls leave ya about 10" from the ceiling to store long items.   If you are going to have alot of valuable stuff in there you should think about security and insurance.
Not sure what all you have for equipment/tools but, like someone said wall space gets used up quickly, start trying to think of how you can double up things to use the space efficiently.  When I had my wood working shop, I made all of my tools modular so they all mounted into one table/shelf system.  Probably something you dont need but it worked great.  Use standard sizes as much as possible, once you start getting into custom fitting things you will be chasing that for a long time (everytime you want to change/add something).

Bike parts make nice wall art !
Coat hangers and paper towel roll holder made from 1" boat handrail mounts, SS tube and inexpensive handlebar grips !
Lots of options; let your imagination run !!!

Well I got the insulation up this past weekend.  Great Help from the two grandson's.  Looking at putting a Mini Split heating / cooling system in,  then the walls go up,  thinking on 3/8 plywood.
I used 1/2" good one side plywood and it's enough to hold hagers for seats, parts, etc. and not all that expensive.
Better than drywall in mu opinion

Rascal,

Man that it a great looking shop.  I sure appreciate all the suggestions,  I have lots of parts I can hang on the walls.  Hope to get mine finished in about another month or so.  But your shop has sure given me some ideas.  thanks Again

EVERY garage MUST contain at least ONE "pinup" calendar that the wife/girlfriend/significant other does not approve of! This is a MUST! No respectable garage is without one! These are the rules and we as car and motorcycle enthusiasts must adhere to them! It does not have to be Playboy or something like that, but bikini-clad women in/around/near sports cars or bikes on beaches is a requisite. This is age-old tradition so don't question it!

Ok, ok. I will be the first one to admit that my garage does not have this because the last thing I want is my daughter to ask me why I have that in the garage... thus I have them inside the tool box...

I'm afraid not any progress,  I had to have open heart surgery on December 10th to fix 4 blockages,  just now getting my feet back on the ground, so hopefully I will be posting some progress in a few weeks.  Thanks for asking

Dang Jimmy, good to hear that you are on the mend. Don't overdo it, the garage will wait. So heal up then get busy and finish the job. ( just picking )

Well I have made a little progress.  Bought a ceiling fan the other day and figured I would install it and help cool the shop down while I am putting up the walls.  I will be posting some more pic's in a few days of the inside walls.

Looks like you bought one of those "Big Ass Fans" model for the shop.   :2vrolijk_21:

I've seen some of them that are extremely large;  hence the name.
