Has anybody changed the air cleaner on their SESG?
« on: December 07, 2009, 07:02:38 PM »

Just curious if anybody has changed their air cleaner?

Personally, I think this one will flow enough air for what I'll need.  But there are different thoughts and opinions.....some may want more air flow.  What are you doing with your SESG?

IMHO...  I'll be keeping mine.

Seems to me that if you took the filter apart and the SEAC filter apart, unfolded the filter material, the square inch filter area would be as much if not the same. My opinion, it would be more than the SEAC.

Sort of like this... Take a tall drinking glass and measure the circumference of the glass. One would thing it would be smaller in measurement than the glass is tall. Do this, you may be very surprised the circumference of the average glass is much longer in a straight line than the height of the glass.

I will be keeping my air cleaner....I just really like the way it looks, not to mention it is already a high flow set-up.

Heavy Breather is good... otherwise keep what ya got. IMO of course.

29253-08A Fits '08-later Touring models. Does not fit models equipped with fairing lower glove boxes. DOES fits if you remove the right glove box... I've been running this one for 3 years with lowers.

28716-10 Fits '08-later Touring models equipped with Fairing Lower Glove Boxes. This one was released just this year for fairing lowers use.

I had the heavy breather on my 08 SG, but am going to stay with the AC that came with the SESG.  I like the looks of it and I think it probably gives about the same air flow as it's pretty much open all around.

So are you keeping it or going with K&N?  I think the K&N will be a thicker elelment....thereby providing more surface area.

I'd like to see what that looks like on our bike. :2vrolijk_21:

the only thing I was looking at doing was to put the sock the filter then the chrome cover.  have it tuned with this set up.. then I don't have to worry about finding it when I ride in the rain.. since I ride in all weather.  but will have to look at it when I get the bike.

Yes I do realize that it will restrick the flow a little... but I really don't want to be looking for the sock in a down pour on the side of the road... and I don't like the look of the sock over the chrome....

JC, is memory serves me correctly according to Steve at Fullsac the HD Heavy Breather is worth about 2 HP on the dyno when changing nothing else... For me, I prefer the stock look as well.

I think that will be a first. :nixweiss:

I've got the A/C sock in the saddle bag but now that I have leg fairings, it'll probably get moved to the glove box.  It will stay in the bike, though.  I've been known to get caught out playin in the rain myself, so it will definately stay in the bike. :2vrolijk_21:

Sock definitely in the bag not sure it will fit in the manner described and if it did will probably damage the sock.

The only issue riding in the rain without it is possible wear to the paper filter element.

This is fixed more simply with a reusable filter element like the K&N element.

The Kuryakyn Hyperchargers for example have no rain socks but come with a permanent element.

This maybe a stupid question but what the hell:  Can water (from rain, washing etc.)  actually penetrate the filter element and get into the intake system, possibly damaging components?  I not thinking about a few drops, but perhaps like a 20 min. ride in rain?       :(

Water injection is frequently used in supercharged engines to cool combustion temperatures. It will not cause damage to the engine at worst it might cause a temporary stumble. I have ridden many miles (days not minutes) in the rain with open Hypercharger intakes and never experienced any negative performance issues :2vrolijk_21:

Never experienced water in a FI bike.  However, I have experienced water in an open filter on a carberated bike.....within a very short period of time it started running very crappy....even died at the signal light a couple of times.  That's the purpose of the rain sock......to keep the water out of the filter.

If the filter element gets saturated it's no longer sucking air, it's now sucking water. :nixweiss:

I am definitely interested in changing mine.  If anyone does before I do, please post a pic for me.  I want to change for the same reason I am changing my derby cover, I do not need all the obnoxiously big 110 scribbles all over the bike.

Not sure what you looking for, but check this link out. I run a Power Pacc with open element, ridden in some pretty heavy rain with no problem.

The outer cover is just a Joker air cleaner insert, I took the raw metal inner cover that came with the Power Pacc air cleaner and had it powder coated black, cost me $10 to have it coated since the local guy does this gloss black all the time. Someone else on this site did this first, that's where I got the idea. Can't remember who, but he had his done to match his bike, i think it was a Jalapeno. So you can pick any air cleaner insert you like, as long as it doesn't require special brackets to mount it.

P.S. One other thing, I made a spacer to go behind the air cleaner cover where the bolt goes through, there is a gap and if you tighten it to much without anything in between toy could bend the inner cover. I just put some modeling clay on the back side of the chrome cover, sprayed a little lube on the black cover around the bold hole, tightened it until it was snug and then removed and measured the thickness of the clay. You could also just use several washers, but my buddy has a lathe and a mill so we just made a spacer.

Thanks, I like it, it sticks out a little farther than stock, but most of the high performance ones do. With the open element you also hear the injectors and a Little air sucking in when you get on it, but doesn't bother me. If you like open element but want more leg room, something like the Forcewinder would be a good choice.

This looks like the element here is possibly the right one but I emailed them about a 2010 SESG solution.

Large Capacity Filter Element for RK-3909 (includes longer spacers) 2 1/4" 1999-2009 RT-3910

Does the K&N filter fit ?

K&N does not make a filter that fits the stock A/C set-up. if you want a K7N you need a different A/C assembly, like  AN Big Sucker

Something I've been playing with is dying the filter before oiling. Works good with black dye. As long as you're servicing the filter yourself and often. Had a customer that didn't like the pink look

cleaned it real good, let it dry, got some blk rit dye from Hobby Lobby,  mix in very hot water, +140 in bucket, soak filter for one hour, shake out, not in the house,  then let stand and dry, then oil.
the trick is that the color has to be darker than the oil

Take it Easy Greasy Cuz it's a long walk home.
