PM PAYS OFF AGAIN!
« on: January 27, 2006, 05:28:07 PM »

Yeah, 'er 'uh, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Neal Taylor just informed me he had Maudie all back together, and was putting new oils in all three holes, when he found excessive metal on the drain plug of my 6-speed transmission.  Pulled the pan and found a piece of metal about an inch long, and maybe 1/8 to 1/4" in width, that had the appearance of having run through some gearing.  He thought it may be part of a bearing retainer, maybe.  Should have Her back together next week, hopefully.  ;D Not such good news, but LUCKY again!  ;) The transmission had not given me any indication of a problem, or impending failure.  It really doesn't surprise me, as I have given it a very hard life.  Just glad to catch it before it exploded!  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Later--HUBBARD

You have been one lucky man on finding all these potential problems ahead of time. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Can I borrow your "rabbit's foot"? Glad to hear you getting all these things caught/repaired before they could leave you sitting on the side of road, I know you will be glad to get "Old Maudie" back so you can go "WFO" again. ;D

HUBBARD-

Sorry to hear about your lucky, unlucky news. Glad you found the problem before it was too late. Are you rebuilding or replacing w/ new?
With the luck I have, I would have unloaded her in Daytona to have the tranny go out twenty miles outta town!

Hope all goes well! And I'm sure with the new steroids Ole Maudie is on she'll be ripped!!

Take Care,

Grover

p.s. Hope to see you in the CVO cup league [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Don't know the final diagnosis yet, Grover.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Whatever it takes to fix Her.  What do you mean Steroids?  I had Her De-Tuned!  ;) Too much Power!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]  Later--HUBBARD

Hub, you gotta be living right.  I'm with you on the PM though.  I just sit back and grin when I get ribbings about my compulsive nature with PM and cutting oil filters and the like. Nearly 40 years without an on road failure and that, of course, includes the AMF days as well as the old HD hangin' on times.

Hub, just a question for curiousity's sake.  But I don't remember which six speed you had.  Was it the HD branded unit or a Baker?  Given the dainty way Maude is so regularly ridden sure can't blame the tranny in either case.  Just wondering which one it was that suffered the failure.

Hubbard, Neil is a thorough guy, too many mechs just bolt em up and don't spend the time to do it right.

Neil Taylor just called, and gave me the diagnosis on Maudie's Transmission.  It appears the inner bearing cage on the 5th gear Mainshaft, which bolts to the Belt Pulley, looks like it "unwound", and simply dropped to the bottom of the Transmission.  Neil said he had seen the outer bearing fail on the 6-speed, but this is a first for the inner bearing.  Everything else looked like new!  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  He installed new bearings, and is waiting on the cover gasket, which should arrive tomorrow.  Won't be long, now!  ;) Later--HUBBARD

Hubbard   I would have had the same problem, but caught it in time. Both of the main bearings had bad spots on them and when they were removed and I spun them in my hands they felt like they were full of grit. Is Bakker saying anything about this. You're the third person including me to have this problem
