Does the engine case need to be "clearanced" for the cam lobes on the Redshift cams?

Quote
I have used a dremel / die grinder in the past and I won't make that mistake again. It took a long time to clean all of the metal dust out of the cam chest. I purchased the tool from Zippers that cuts the case, It works much better than the dremel method and the clean up much easier as the particals are much larger than the fine dust that the dremel leaves behind. (Everytime I use it and thank myself again for buying it.)

Well does anyone know??????????
Surely Zippers would have told us if the case needs to be clearanced!

When this was mentioned it made me start to wonder also? You would have thought this would have been mentioned. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that these cams are being advertised as "bolt in cams for the 103ci motors" then the cases wouldn't need to be clearanced. I would also think if they needed to be when I and others ordered them then Zippers would have advised and mentioned/offered the tool that hd-dude talks about for clearancing cases. BTW - I've called Zippers, and my sales rep couldn't answer for sure at this time, but will get back to me. So, as soon as I know I'll post. If anybody knows this answer in the meantime, please post.

FYI, when the test cams were installed by Harry (Unbalanced) and Jim Brown (dyno testing) the cases were not relieved.  The lift on the test cams is the same as that on the production 575's.

I just did a cam swap in an 03 with S&S 510G cams (.510 lift) and I clearanced the case because they were right at the .030 clearance area. I have the tool so it was a no brainer to go ahead and do it. These cams are a 575 lift so I would think it will be very close [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

HD Dude,
You just like using your tool don't you??????

I hear you both, but to me a camera isn't high on the priority list. I've got some really expensive 35mm cameras collecting dust now. I'm not really into taking pictures, and definitely can't see taking money from my chrome or go fast fund right now to buy a camera. The reason the one at Sam

Mike,
The cases may need to have some material removed to clear the cam lobes, but it should not need much.

Aussie;
I think the "may need to " is a CYA on Zippers part. There is a variance in the casting of the cases and that may be the reason for the caution. BLM stated that The test set did not need to be. I would check for clearance regardless. At least .030" is needed. Here is a pic of the one I did last night.

Relief on the top....

As far as being "bolt in" you will need the tools to remove and re-install the bearings in the case as well as the tool to remove and press the bearings & cams into the cam plate.
