56FLE makes a pit stop in Bellingham
« on: August 19, 2008, 08:49:35 PM »

John got to Bellingham today in time for lunch and then he headed south to our house in Lake Stevens.

John and I had a great lunch at Anthony's Homeport a seafood and chowder place.

What an amazing trip he is on, I know he is looking forward to chronicling it when he gets home so I won't go into detail, but tomorrow we are planning to do the North Cascades Highway and then south to Roslyn, WA for the night at our other place.

Tonight it'll be steaks on the bbq and a few drinks while Cindy and I enjoy John's tale of adventure.

Roger is a great host with a very nice Casa. The ride thru the North Cascade National Park and around the area was fantasic.

Roge and I rode 330 miles today, looked like rain all day but only really got rained on the last 15 miles of the trip. Rain what rain but Roger is ready for it.

Roger, looks like we need to get the rain gear on again, if we put it on maybe it will keep the rain away.

Wow, gorgeous pictures of what in my mind, is even more gorgeous in person.  Every time I see pictures of big mountains, I remember driving to Nelson.  Every mile I felt I was getting smaller and smaller.

Rog, you should have sprung for some Leonetti!!

Leonetti is mostly at the other house, but why waste it after three Crown Royals. ::)

We had a nice Kiona cab at Spacone's in Cle Elum last night.

If you haven't stopped there you should, great Italian food, John had a killer seafood fettuccine and I had a lamb shank with fettuccine on the side.  Whatever you do get fettuccine :2vrolijk_21:

John just headed out, I'll have a couple pics tonight.

He is having a bit of an issue with his compression release popping off.  He had the gasket part of the service action, but still needs the rest of it.

He'll stop in Yakima and see what they think and then he's working over Mt Rainier, Mt St Hellens and down toward the Magoo's and Rooster's.  Hopefully they'll make contact.

We had a great time and our ride was great, avoided most of the rain in the area until the last 20 miles to the mountain house late in the day.

Anyone that wants to reach John as he heads down the coast to Sacramento PM me for his contact info.

Well, I hadn't expected to hear from John until after his adventure when he gets back online more regularly but to my surprise I just got off the phone with him.

It seems that the compression release that was popping off wasn't the issue at all.

He stopped in Yakima to see about the part and they didn't have it so he continued on down the road about 20 miles and WHAMMY...............

Now running on one cylinder he managed to limp back to Yakima and the dealer.

Seems that he lost a lifter and it took out ancilliary other parts.  Now the good news as I lat heard it.  All parts in stock and he now should be back on the road, same day service while he waited.

I hope he checks in here with details, but if not we will know he's safely once again on his way.

Hopefully he'll have that big smile the rest of the trip, like this..............

Just like Tom Bodet, we'll keep the light on for ya'   :2vrolijk_21:

A fair number of the group that made Nelson made that route over Hwy 20 and it is a great ride along with very pretty country.

John promises to post his pics of his entire trip when he gets back to home base by the way.

Just got them over to that house, that's why the truck was there too.

I got them back in '04 and '05 in New Mexico.  The oryx is from the White Sands Missle range area although I got it on a landowner tag in Truth or Consequences, NM on Ted Turner's place there.

Gary,

He hit a lot of states from his parents home on the upper peninsula to Sturgis, Alberta, BC, Washington and now onto Oregon and California before he heads back.

I know that he got to his parents via Georgia, Florida and a bunch of eastern states.

What a trip and a great guy as all who were in Sedona can attest.  Wish I could have done the whole trip with him.  What a dream.

Just got a phone call from Roger, he gave me John's number and called him, seems he is still at the dealer getting bike fixed. Sounds like he will stay there tonight and head our way tommorrow. Going to try and show him some of the Oregon Coast so will report back and try to get some pics to add to his trip. :2vrolijk_21:

Maybe he was overly optimistic on the estimate to get the bike done.  Still sounds like it'll be running today, which is great, we introduced him to Crown and 7, so you have a leg up on him knowing that he liked it.

Roger and Rooster,

These guys in Yakima where great! They stayed late about 30 minutes and got it back together so I could be on my way.

I have the bike and it is running like a top. I'm staying in Yakima overnight and will be going past Mt Rainier and Mt Saint Helen on my way down to Rooster's. Ran it up and down the roads around Yakima for about 30~40 miles of testing tonight.

One of the lifters broke and needed replacement, they put new cams, 4 new lifters and an oil pump. Mechanic had 35 years of experience, and knew what he was doing. Took the oil pan off and checked every where for any metal shavings.

Guess the proof will be in the running of the motor and see if I get any new vibrations. The lifter noises seemsto be a lot less now then before, maybe the anyone who has excessive lifter noise between 2~3K rpms should ask their dealer to check the lifters during any other repair work in the area.

See you tomorrow Rooster, looking forward to it, and thanks Roger for a great time.

Roger,

Probably should have had HD replace the motor but being on the road, better to just get me down the road. If the motor starts having problems later I can always show HD the work order and tell them to give me a whole new motor. That would be nice at 30K or so.  8)

Running late, need to pack up and get going, Canyon Rd was a great ride and no rain at all yesterday.

I think it is great fortune to be back on the road in only one day.  We'll all send positive vibes for the motor work to be all that was needed.

That Canyon Road I knew would be a winner, lots of twisty bits and the ability to run as fast as you are comfortable along the Yakima River.  Only wish it was a longer stretch.

I sure hope you are able to do Highway one in Oregon along the coast I know you'll love that too.

I got a PM from Magoo, he'll try and reach you though he is tied up at work all day.

John made it to the Rooster's last night just as it was getting dark. We had dinner and stayed up late talking. We plan on taking a ride down the coast today, will get some pics and post later.

Had great rides the last 2 days, first coming down from Roger's place to Rooster's place I passed by Mt. Rainier. I then hooked up with 7 other riders and we all rode pass Mt. St. Helen. Today the Roosters an I rode along the Oregon Coast.

Now the bad news, my oil light started to flicker as we where arriving bad at the Rooster's place this evening. Stopped and started the bike andnow the oil light stays on all the time. I'm going to call HD customer service and tell them it is time to replace my motor with a new one, this one had had too manyinternal problems that can score bearing and other surfaces.

John,

Hope the engine light isn't major.

If it is, maybe that dealer will have the 2009 you are looking at.   :nixweiss:   Not to be planting any ideas or anything.

Bummer about the engine glitches, hope it gets sorted out soon or they do the right thing and give you a whole new engine (without problems).  :2vrolijk_21: Thanks for the pics.

Sad day at the Rooster's place today, Salem HD is still talking with MOCO regarding new motor or just more bandaids. The Mechanic says the crank has 7 thousands runout and was puzzled why the oil pump gear cracked. Hope the MOCO does the right thing but I am not holding my breather. I'll know more tomorrow.

Howie,

Damage, well Thursday last week the motor broke a lifter into three large pieces and unknown little ones. Yakima HD replaced the SE255 cams, all 4 lifters, and the oil pump. They took off the oil pan and cleaned out the small bits and then sent me on my way.

When I talked to Salem HD I told them all this and when the SM first talked to MOCO warranty dept. he did not tell them that the oil pan had been removed and cleaned. MOCO originally just wanted Salem HD to clean the oil pan and replace the oil pump, once the SM told MOCO that the oil pan had been removed last Thursday, the MOCO decided to replace the motor. The Cam plate had a big mark where the oil pump spins and the oil pump gear had been cracked. The rear cylinder was tiger striped according to the mechanic and I think after looking at all the pieces together the MOCO had no room to wiggle out of replacing the motor.

After 24,500 miles it is going to be really nice to have a new motor with all the upgrades including the new heads. I am a very happy camper today.

AJ,

First I need to get the bike back on the road, all these problems have really screwed up my plans, I needed to get back to Texas for personal business then needed to get the bike back to Grand Rapids Michigan before Oct. I'm scheduled to go back out to S.E. Asia Oct 2nd. Summer is coming to an end :( and I am running out of time. The breakdowns have taken there toll on my trip plans.

I'm not sure I'll make it through SC in Sept but I never rule out anything completely.

:2vrolijk_21: Got the bike back today. Only bad thing is I now have to break it in again. More difficult 2nd time around.

Howie,

The Yakima WA HD mechanic said he has never seen a lifter roller fail in a twin cam motor so I'm a first. When he put it back together, he cleaned all he could, oil pan, cam area, then replaced the cams, lifters, and oil pump. Motor still had stuff in the cases or oil passages because after the oil pump locked up 3 days later the Salem HD mechanic didn't find and metal until the was agreed the motor was going to be replaced, then all oil lines, oil filter area, and oil cooler where flushed and he found yet another smaller roller bearing which had the Salem HD shop replaced just the oil pump I would have probably made another few days before the motor had problems.

Maybe the lifter was defective from day one, who knows, maybe these motor need more rest between long runs. Since I have been on extended vacation all spring and summer, the bike has not had much of a rest, I average 157 miles a day.

The motor feels just like any new motor, it needs miles to loosen it up a bit, the first 30 is really tough if you don't have a good long hill to motor up and then engine break down. I found a nice long hill just outside Silverton 9 miles west of Salem so I could at least put a reasonable load on the rings both during acceleration and deceleration.

I am happy that the MOCO did the right thing but they really had little choice, the crank had 7 thousands runout, the oil pump gear was cracked and jammed into the housing, the mechanic thought the runout on the crank caused it. The rear cylinder had 7 thousands sleeve movement. It still needed the recall done as well according to the HD web site.

Add it all together plus the fact that it had just broke three days earlier and MOCO decided it was cheaper to replace it then keep paying for multiple warranty claims.

We went back to the dealership today to meet some friends that just bought a SE Road Glide. I'll let them post pictures and introduce the new baby. Until then my lips are zipped.

Roger,

I was tempted to buy a new bike the day I dropped off my bike at the Salem shop, I was looking at this in the showroom. But in the show room the colors don't show their true looks. Good thing I didn't see it in the sunshine. I also just could not see buying two bikes in one year becaue I wore the first one out.

John,

Where are you, I have been in the Manitoba bush and then in the Yukon for most all of September, how are things going.

Glad I wasn't around when you found the glide ::)

Roger,

I thought about you but the dealer told me he could not sell it to a resident of Washington or California, something about the exhaust emissions.

Don bought it and it registering it in Idaho with someone in his family.

The dealer get your SERG yet? I like and don't like them at the same time. I guess I like more chrome on the front end and with the SERG all I see is paint up front.

The dealer in Austin TX had a grey one for sale when I was there early September but they wanted 3K over MSRP. >:(
I also can't see buying two motorcycles in the same year.

I am parking the motorcycle tomorrow in the basement of the Grand Rapids MI HD shop. They are doing a deal for climate controlled storage with oil change, battery maintenance, wash & wax, and other things for $300. Storage is from Oct 1st to Apr 1st. Fit my schedule perfectly, got an email yesterday from the company I contract to in Asia asking if I could possibly help out with a small project, more perfect timing. I told the company I was leaving for Thailand Thursday and they said that was perfect.

The bike has 31,700 miles on it, the new motor runs real smooth, seems faster then the old one but maybe not as much torque, all this is seat of the pants, I have never done a dyno run but part of the storage deal is a free dyno run if I want it.

Roger, send me an email or PM with your mailing address, once I get to Thailand I have something to send you. Something you and I talked about.

Roger,

How was the hunting? Your buddy get that moose? You get a 2nd one yourself so you have book ends in the game room? It has got to be beautiful up there in moose country. Post a few pictures.

As for me, yea I guess I always try not to let things get me down. Always try to have a smile on my face and not let my personal problems spill over onto the people I meet each day. The picture with me in the tow truck smiling, I guess I figured two times in 3 days, HD would have to give me a new motor which eventually did happen, I got lucky. :)
