Should I replace this starter ring gear?
« on: November 07, 2010, 09:45:48 PM »

In the process of upgrading to a six speed.  Pulled the guts out of the primary and found a few teeth missing from the ring gear.  Looing for opinions on if I should replace it.

Unfortunately you should Matt.  It won't get better.  You're in there now.  Now is easier than sometime on the side of the road away from home when it's knocked teeth off the starter or there's not enough left for the drive to effectively engage.

Short answer yes.

That is what most 04-05 CVO ring gears look like.

There are a few repalcement options for starter pinion and ring gears sets.

Just thought of something else Matt.  While it's apart take advantage of the opportunity to eyeball down inside the basket.  They will fail sometimes.  Will often show cracks before they come apart.

Well, you have inspired me into action. Just as a precaution i just ordered this assembly to keep on my shelve from surdyke.com.   There was coupon for  Free shipping last night.    ;D    Seemed cheap enough for an entire clutch pack.   Im thinking I will ride it till start seeing some symptoms, then replace it.

How did the pinion gear look?  does it need replacement too?

Part No   Description   Qty   Price

Just check your drain plug next time you change your primary fluid.  That little magnet does a good job of playing tooth fairy.

Ouch.  Those are definitely a bad omen.  Might as well check it sooner rather than later.  Too easy for later to be at some diner 150 miles from home when it decides to break enough to stay where it is.

I did the 10/84.  Better do it before you have more problems with it.

Am I lucky or is this thread about something you don't see too often, cause I sure as hell have only seen a couple of ring gears that looked that bad and they were both on some really old and ill treated shovelheads

What are the symptoms I should be looking for?  Kick-back✔, loud clunking noise on kick-back✔, starter not engaging after hitting the switch✔?

What are the symptoms I should be looking for?  Kick-back✔, loud clunking noise on kick-back✔, starter not engaging after hitting the switch✔?

Kick back is usually related to where the pistons are relative to TDC when you push the starter button. Loud clunking noises are most likely caused by less than complete engagement of the starter gear possibly symptomatic of a bad bendix, bendix assemby, spring etc. The starter not engaging can be caused by the same issues. If you have a H-D with a 06 and older starter, you also have a starter drive shaft coupling which is an internal gear sleeve that can be causing the issues. Other than the clunking noise, none of the other things you mention would indicate a badly damaged ring gear. What you would most likely hear from that would be a gawd awful gnashing of gears, grinding, unholy nasty noise - - however, it could be intermittent. A well tuned H-D will often fire instantly which means the starter gear only engages a portion of the entire 360degrees of the ring gear. Unless you are near or on the bad teeth, you might not hear it. Bottom line ?  If you're worried about this, drain your primary, pull the outer primary cover and check the gear yourself. With the bike in neutral and the battery disconnected, you should be able to roll the primary a full rotation to check every gear.

actually the current ecm does not fire the cyls till three full revs - they start almost instant on the third rev....

its what makes it impossible to use the new baker kicker on them.

Service tech made a comment comparing the stock fasteners (rivets) with the compufire (bolts) and the possibility of bolts coming loose and causing damage.  I was wondering if this would be an issue.  I plan to have the bolts checked whenever the primary is removed.  Thanks!
