What Eye Protection do you use in Rain?
« on: August 22, 2011, 07:27:32 AM »

What eye protection do you wear in rain?
I have tried numerous things over the past 40+ Years and the bottom line is that in a Torrential Downpour, there doesn't appear to be anything that works well.

Cheers

With my Wiley X glasses and a H.D. helmet similar to this it does very well. But you're right, when it's dumping buckets it's still difficult. FWIW, I also keep a micro fiber handy to wipe inside and out of the shield.

In a Torrential Downpour, there doesn't appear to be anything that works well.

Under those conditions sometimes even full face helmets will either leak at the vents (unless closed) or fog up if closed. I've seen riders wearing scuba masks or swim goggles, but those fog up quickly too.

Googles with the light sensitive lenses.  They change from sunglasses to clear and back and the elastic strap lets you vent them easy and keeps the rain out.

I find that in heavy rain, it's best to remove glasses due to water getting on both sides of the lens and then you really can't see chit.  Pulling over is easier said than done in some situations.  Like on that long bridge down in Louisana (before the hurricane blew it away....thought the thunderstorm that caught some of us on it was going to be the end of us....raining sideways and the traffic would run over you if you didn't stay ahead of the trucks and no where to pull off, of course.....just ride blind and pray.  I hate rain in those situations.  No wipers on a mc.  spyder

Well, Dave, you try not to, but the storm we got caught in was a real gully-washer...lighten bolts coming down all around....not fun at all on that bridge.  The hurricane did it in a couple of years after that and I just rode on the newly replacement last summer.  We better hunker down 'cause Irene is headed our way now if she decides to miss ya'll in Fla.  :nervous: spyder

Any amber lens with good optics works.   Spraying both sides with Harley or Honda spray detail wax helps with the fogging issues.       JT

In light to moderate rain - Rx glasses with the foam insert so they work like goggles.  Got them from Biker Rx at Daytona in '10.  But...their prices have gone up, as in thru the roof.  Put Blaze or Zookie on both sides.

Heavy rain, same goggles under a full face.

Note, this is on a SEUC with a Klockwerks shield.

I wear Clic Goggles all the time.

http://www.clicgoggles.com/products.html?cat=goggles

Rather than changing out lenses for rain or night riding, I purchased a second set for quick change over for various riding conditions.

I have used these exclusively for years and have nothing but good things to say about them.

That's exactly what does the trick!  And they work great at any speed, just in case you're thinking they won't hold.

They also are great when you're filling your tank... Quickly open them to see the fuel getting close to the top... Also at border crossing when the officers want to see your eyes!

I have two approaches that both work. First is to wear a Full Face helmet with a Fog City or similar (Shoei pin-lok etc) inner shield on your outer shield. I have ridden in the Keys with this in hour long downpour and no fogging and clear vision. Other is what I used before starting to wear Full Face helmet, Oakley or similar SNOW ski goggles, the Snow Grade has twin lens, This works the same as the Fog City on a Full Face. I tried everything and these are the only two remedies I can find that work, Road 480 miles from Atlanta in a constant rain a few years ago with the Snow goggles and had good vision. I do tape the lens off and spray the breathing outer foam with Scotchgard protectant but then I spray everything with Scotchgard. You can get the Oakleys for a normal head or a different model for glasses wearers and also multi-colors of your choice. The Fog City inserts and also the Shoei/Nolan's all come in colors of your choice and are instantly removeable when you don't need them or want only the clear shield. The FOG CITY is permanent when you install it but works the best.

Real happy with my Nolan Trilogy N43 helmet. With the full face shield w/ pinlock inner shield and chinbar in place, excellent visability and zero fogging in the rain. When weather clears, easy swap back to visor and riding glasses. Chinbar is removable if desired. Bought it through J&M with their speakers /boom mike installed. Got 10% CVO discount. No complaints.

You're welcome.

I got caught in a heck of a downpour today on the highway and you will find that they work amazingly well in the rain as well.

Take care & ride safe.

I agree- my Wiley X glasses are terrible to see through when the rain hits them- I figure I'll try treating them with Rain Away on the outside of the lenses.
