How common is the dreaded rear head gasket leak?
« on: October 02, 2007, 10:47:05 PM »

1700 miles, 3 days before my scheduled 1000 mile service and my buddy points the slight oil leak with a micro air bubble on the rear head.
Annapolis HD pulled it appart, replaced the gaskets and same problem.
Any suggestions family?
Thanks Trace

Most likeley from the excessive heat
Thunder Headers and race tuner along with a/c will be ordered tomorrow!

to follow up from the last conversation, the dealer witnesswed a rough edge on the motor base. MoCo advised to file down carefully and re-assmble.

Putting a FILE on a critical mating surface sounds like something the MOCO would suggest.  90% chance that the oil you see around the base of the cylinder is getting there via the head gasket leak.  It has not shown itself on the cylinder fins yet.

Latest and greatest.
They filed down the rough edge, and noticed the rear cylinder was separating from the sleeve.
Next day air new rear cyclinder for tomorrow, God willing, up in running tomorrow night or early Saturday

My rear cyl replaced twice due to seperation.  Is this a production problem with cyl or is this caused by excessive heat?  Inquiring minds really want to know - but the moco won't say.

 >:(  Mine bit the dust this last Saturday, was on a ride and happened to look down and saw oil on the tranny.  Looked at the cylinder and sure enough the rear was leaking oil.  The question with the rear cylinder gasket leaks is:  It is not IF, but only WHEN it is going to start leaking.  Mine happened at 7,985 miles. >:(

Got the call from the HD dealership that has my bike.  They called the Motor Company and were told to replace the rear cylinder.....I asked if they had torn the motor yet and was told no....asked how the determination was made to replace the rear cylinder...they were told by HD to replace it...the beat goes on!!!!!

With the miles you've got on the bike, they should do both F&R Cylinders and rings, not just the rear. I think your dealer would agree and a call to Milwaukee should make that happen.

Welcome to the club.  ;D

Sorry to hear all this, but it is true.
I had the rear cylinder done at 6410 miles. They wouldn't do the front.
Just my two cents.

Add 1 more.  My 07 B&O has a very slight leak at this point.  8K on the odometer.  Headed to Key West week of T'giving, so told them I'd take the chance it would completely come apart.  Will put it in when I return.  They can replace the tour pack (pleather worn through on right front corner) and the left saddle bag lid the tech put a scratch in on the initial service  >:(
Like napalm said - "the beat goes on" - and seems to never end.
