What tools do you carry?
« on: December 26, 2008, 11:54:27 PM »

Wondering what tools you carry, if any, and any tips on why you carry them. Thanks.

I carry way more than I probably will ever need. That comes from riding bikes at one time that were less than reliable.  ;)

Looks like you don't have room on that thing to carry any tools.

I carry the standard issue HOG toolset.

Great idea of the trailer list; didn't know it existed but will copy and carry as a last resort :2vrolijk_21: Still also a good idea to carry a few tools as ya might actually fix the thing and save one of the great trailer folks a bunch of time; especially if they are busy at work or with family, etc, etc.  :2vrolijk_21:

Admiral I was going to carry them in my pocket ::). Thanks for the reply's. I hope I never need to use any. I'm new to riding bikes, well owning. My starter relay was clicking and I had to get the allen wrenches out for the side panel, this was at home, that got me thinking what tools I should carry. Thanks for the info all.

A spare key/fob (that's accessable....not locked in bag) and fuses.....where to stop.....like Puzzled said, history of older scooters makes you lug around more tools than you need/use.  :)  har!  :drink: spyder

I don't carry any tools ..... have thought MANY times that I should  have some 'basic' things.  But I don't even have the tool bag mounted on the bike. I used to .... but the only thing I ever put in it was a bottle of water  :-O

I carry, credit card, cell phone, and having towing service which include lodging cost if more than 200 miles from home.................

I've used the towing service once.  Last year.  I went up into VA a year ago last Oct. ..... I still had the stock battery in my bike (year 2000 FXR4 ya know).  I told my wife before I left that I should replace that battery.  I was camping out ...... it got down into the high thirties the first night out .... the bike wouldn't start in the AM ...... called for service. They came and got me, they will not transport batteries ..... put the bike in a trailer and hauled me to the nearest HD store.  Put in a new battery and I was on my way.........

I carry a can of Glare polish.  I've been told that stuff will prevent anything bad from happening to the bike.

That stuff is so good I just carry an old rag that 103 threw away after he applied some Glare.  All by itself it keeps chains from breaking, belts from getting cut or punctured and tires from going flat.

Not true.  Wife backed into a fully Glared front fender on my SEEG a little over a year ago . . . though, come to think of it, the car bumper was also Glared and suffered no damage.  Hmmmmmm.

So you're saying the protective Glare rag was in her car and not stored in the bike?

What ever you carry please do NOT make the same mistake I did.  Carried mine, allen wrenchs, plyers, adjustable wrench, a multi head screw driver and my fork lock in a leather tool bag mounted below the head light.

Looked ok but apparently everytime the fork compressed, the fender hit the bag which dented it pretty good.  The only repair I tried was the compressed air "dent removal" I saw on a thread somewhere on this site.  Didn't work.

DANG. that ain't good  >:( Carried my tools in the same place you did for 2 years, never thought of that; then last month/this month  :confused5: I mounted a fork brace on the front and now I ain't carrying tool bag there no more (Fork Brace looks to good to cover up), so I'll carry in my bags when they are on and when they ain't I'll just attach tool pouch to the sissy bar  :2vrolijk_21:

So did ya ever get your fender repaired?

I carry the standard issue HD tool kit that comes with the bike - a small assortment of nylon zip-ties - cell phone - and credit/debit card... same as most folks.

One other item that I carry that no one mentioned, unless I missed it, is Duct Tape.  You can make a lot of temporary repairs with duct tape.  In a pinch, you can also secure stuff to a luggage rack if you are short on bungee cords - repair clothing malfunctions - dress a wound - and it also comes in pretty handy for securing those individuals that become a bit unruly ;)

Duct TapeDon't Leave Home Without It!

HeHe!!! You FD guys really KILL ME!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

There are NO factory supplied tool kits for HD Street Bikes, just the Touring Bikes! (psst, and this is the FXR board) ;D ;)

[So did ya ever get your fender repaired?

Nope...I'm hoping it can be repaired and not have to be replaced.  I'll have to bite the bullet this season though. Especially if I make it to Eureka Springs.  Need to try to keep up with the shiney bikes I see on this site!

This is a multi-purpose tool I carry sometimes. It can help me get supper if lost, adjust bad attitudes, and scare rabid dogs away.

There was an identically titled thread started at least three years ago on this. LOTS of useful comments on that one. Where's a moderator when you need him

Hey, I just realized. We have no women moderators. It's an all boys club

Waz up wid dat ?

We got some smart, talented, sweetheart lady riders with killer IP skills on this site.

Is this 2009 or 1909 ?

Elvislee,

Can you post a picture of that fork brace? Was it H-D or some other brand?  Let me know maybe I can just look it up online.

I'm thinking it would look good and cover the dent depending on where it lands on the fork.

Thanks,

Joe

I believe he used the Custom Cycle Engineering Fork Brace. The SE Brace sits closer to the fender and has no holes in it like the CCE one. It might work better to cover the dent up Joe. This is the SE Brace.
