nitrogen in tires
« on: May 25, 2009, 10:03:36 PM »

Anyone using nitrogen in their tires? I have been thinking about having it added to mine. But, Thought I would see if anyone has tried this already. If you have tried nitrogen in your tires. How did it work? Notice any difference?  :nixweiss:

I have heard of it in mining equipment applications but not for M/C tire applications. What do you hope to gain from it?

They tires are already filled with 78% nitrogen (and change).  Try filling the rest with some exotic gas like unobtainathane.

Less heat, Better tire wear pressure will not change as much, I ran it in my Tractor (as in tractor/trailer) increased tread life about 40%, not sure about on mc tires but have thought about. Glad someone brought it.

I have ran it in my 3/4 ton truck thinking I might save on tread wear etc...  I have noticed that the tires stay cooler than they did with reg air.  My concern with a motorcycle is that the heat that is created from riding warms up the tires which gives us a stickier tire which is better traction.

Absolutely zero scientific data that nitrogen does anything for a streetbike other than transfer money from your pocket to someone else's pocket.  There are many previous threads on this subject, none of which contain anything that supports with facts the use of nitrogen in motorcycle tires.

You want to use nitrogen, go for it.  Just as some folks just can't resist those Nigerian scams and keep losing money to them, some folks just seem to want to hand their money to the snakeoil salemen that have always surrounded the auto (and motorcycle) business.  At least the nitrogen won't cause any harm, other than helping to empty your wallet.  If you want longer tire life and cooler running tires, try checking and adjusting your air pressure to the manufacturer's specs on a regular basis.  I'll stick with the 78% nitrogen mixture I get for free, thank you very much.

Good stuff in tires.  If you're ever out and need a cheap buzz or can't pass out you can just crack a valve stem and sniff a little.

I have been running nitorgen in my Harley's tires since 04.

Biggest thing I have noticed is the tires do not loose pressure like with air.  Also no change in pressure from a 41 degree day to a 65 degree day.

First time it was an Indy that did it when I switch my fatboy tires out to metzlers.  Now since at least 06 my local harley dealer puts it in all their bikes at delivery.

Just don't use Pure Oxygen!! It will be the last time you use it!! Nitrogen has no moisture in it like regular compressed air and so your tires won't fluxuate in tire pressure with temp changes.

What kind of a vac/evac system do they use to purge the old mix from the tires before reinflating?  Any idea how long they leave the old environment under vacuum?

Good question, I never watched.

I do wonder if they do draw it down to a vacuum like you do to a Air conditioning system before you add the freon.

I know, in my garage I could do just that, as I have a vacuum pump designed just for that
