selling my 08
« on: August 28, 2013, 06:32:20 PM »

I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this but here it goes. I'm selling my 08 CVO to purchase a 14 limited.  I advertised in various places, Craigs list, cycle trader, etc. hoping to get a local buyer, but I got someone texting me from L.A. wanting to buy my bike and paying me through PayPal. He doesn't want to talk on the phone because he said he's hard of hearing
and prefers texting.  I showed him one pic. taken from my phone and all of a sudden he wants to send me $25,900 via pay pal, a.s.a.p. To me, this sounds a little fishy. I don't do a lot of business through paypal, especially for this kind of money, so I'm a little leery about this deal. Does this sound like a scam? To me it does.  I guess I need some advice from someone who sells a lot of big money items using paypal.

My feeling is to text him back and ask for a certified check, and when it clears I will send him a title.

If I may quote Steve Miller... "Go on take the money and run".

I never sold anything (just purchased) using PayPal, so I can't advise.  However, if you can get that much for your bike I would grab it and see how soon you can have it transferred to your bank account.  I really don't have any idea how this kind of thing works, but I'm sure someone on this site can assist.

Good luck with the sale.

PS - Just wondering why you're not trading your bike with the dealer on the '14?  What did they offer you?

As long as he is registered with PayPal and they clear the money to your account you are safe. DON'T exchange any paperwork with him until PayPal OK's. I would say its a scam, but if he sends the money..........

I thought I would try to sell it on my own for the simple reason, to get a couple of thousand more.  I put a deposit on a bike, but it won't come in until mid OCT, so I have some time.  My instinct tells me this is some kind of scam
He wants to do this quickly and mentions nothing about shipping :nixweiss:, and doesn't want to talk on the phone.

Trade in ranged between $19,000 and 21,500. I still have to bring it to the dealer I ordered the new bike from to get a quote from them.  They told me if I changed my mind they would give my deposit back.

Sure sound like a scam in the making. This was one of the reasons I traded my '06 ULTRA(non CVO) in when I purchased the FLHTCUSE6.

I hate dealing with tire kickers and scam artists, and all the fools who call say they want to see the item - then never show up at the appointed time/place.

Paying through paypal isn't the issue even though they take a % of the payment like a credit card company. Rest of it sounds mighty fishy.

with paypal they can pay you , then file a complaint with paypal and get the money back - thus having the bike and the cash

and you get to pay the fees to boot

paypal is a good thing - and the guy could be stone deaf and cant use the phone  - it could be true - but it sure sounds like a scam

I was trying to sell 02 heritage & had the same deal only from UK. guy wanted to send me a certified chk for 5k more than I was asking by a cetified chk. I said "no way". he sent the chk any how & wanted me to western union 5k to an account in nyc. checked with bank, they said that chk (& 10k more like it ) go thru every day. after you deposit it & it ends up with insufficient funds, your bank comes AFTER YOU & the wu paper trail is dead end. by the way they get acct # from old defunct businesses. ADVICE: don't accept any kind of chk. I don't know about pay pals policy on this type of deal. but a electronic transfer may be ok thru pay pal. if they back the transaction & guarantee it all & safe personal info
good luck! just be cautios

If it sounds like a scam and looks too good to be true remember, a fool and his money or motorcycle are soon parted. If you believe in unicorns, then go for it.

First off, I agree with everyone else that it is probably a scam....

However, if you were to give this a shot -- just transfer the money from your paypal to your regular account.  It takes about 3-5 business days and if it makes it to your bank account safely then you're OK.

Scam....they send you money from a hacked Paypal account, you ship the item, then the real account holder discovers the theft, reports it to Paypal and the money is refunded from your account. You are out the money and the bike. Only make deals in person, get a certified check, take it to their bank to confirm the money is in the account. This method is still open to fraud but safer - to me at least.

Ray, don't walk but RUN away from this!  As others have already discussed, it's a scam.  The money they are offering for your ride is just to entice you into the deal.  From your responses, you already feel it's a scam so that speaks volumes to your common sense.  If it sounds to good to be true..... :nixweiss:

rayz1951, open another checking account with only say $50.00 in it. Tell the potential buyer to do a wire transfer of all the funds into that account, then you will deliver the bike. As soon as the money is in your account then transfer all of it to another one of your other accounts then there is no way he can get it back, or  you could make an appt. with your bank manager, have the buyer meet you there with the cash, and when the manager counts it and confirms it is not bogus money then you can sign the bike over to the buyer. In California we have a non liability  form that you must send to the DMV as soon as you sell something, and I  mean the same day, with a return receipt. That form protects you if the guy doesn't get insurance and gets in a wreck.  I would have the buyer show me proof of insurance before I let him put hands on  my bike. Don't do certified check a con artist can make one of  those on his computer. If he asks to ride it before he buys it  say "No". He can go to the Harley Dealer and ride a used one. Just my 3 cents. CAHDBIKER  P.S. Texting and not wanting  to talk is the first sign of a scam.

I just purchased a new 2014 Limited and traded my 2007 SE Ultra. Too many con artist; people without the money and so on. I also don't want a bunch of people I don't know coming to my home, looking at my bike. You don't get as much trading in your bike, you do get peace of mind. No hassles, clean and over. I provided ad services to car dealerships most of my working career; you can't believe the stories I have heard, some people will do anything to make off with your goods. They have even been known to harm the selling party, rare but it happens....not worth it to me.

You will love the new 2014 Limited; I was amazed at the difference. I really wonder if pre-2014 touring bikes will take a larger hit than normal. If a lot of touring bike owners start trading in the older bikes, it will effect the market. Would you buy a 5 year old used touring bike for twenty grand when you could have a brand new Limited in black for roughly $25,000? I realize I'm biased, but that will be the big question.

And if you trade it in, you only pay taxes on the difference between the trade and the price of the new bike. Sometimes that is worth it to trade.

I had a similar situation up here in Canada when I was selling my truck ,  I googled the e-mail address and phone number that the individual was using and all kinds of SCAM reports popped up.  You might want to try that to put your mind at ease.

that is the law in Colorado, your state may be different.  You have already paid the taxes on your trade when you bought it.

I didn't realize that.  Here in Michigan the state gets their pound of flesh every time you sell a vehicle, for the selling price not the difference.  Maybe I should go to Denver to visit my daughters and sell it out their.

Re-read what i posted. That only works when you trade it for another. It does not work if you sell and then go someplace else to buy a new one. Trade only. Sometimes it works to your advantage to trade, and sometimes it works to your advantage to sell out right. Depends on what the market will bring on a sale compared to what they will give you on your trade. Plus it might be worth a few lost bucks on the trade, just so you do not have the hassle of Craigslist and e-bay buyers to deal with??

That is what I understood.  I should go to Denver, trade the old for a new.  In MI. you pay the sales tax on the total cost of a new bike, if the bike is $20,000 and your trade in is $15,000 you pay the sale tax on $20,000 not $5000. Like I said MI. wants their pound of flesh, the rotten bastards!!

In Missouri, it doesn't matter if you sell your vehicle privately or trade it in, you only pay tax on the difference.  Just fill out a private sale form if you sell it yourself.  Oregon has no sales tax.  In Arizona, if you buy privately, you pay no sales tax.  From a dealer, they stick it to you.

California collects sales tax on the entire purchase price, no break at all. You cannot go to a lower tax state to buy and then bring back to your state. When you go to register your bike they will charge you the sales tax for your state before issuing a license. No legal way to beat the system, best to pay your states sales tax and put the transaction behind ya.

Short of moving to Oregon, you have the correct philosophy!
