How far can you ride?????
« on: May 18, 2011, 06:58:13 PM »

I was standing in my office with a couple of riders the other day and someone asked how long I could stand to be on the bike.

I told them I was a light weight at about 600 miles max in one day but that I had heard of a club that makes you drive 1000 miles in one day just to join.

We then wanted to know what the longest ride in any one day was...... any body know??????

Rumor is its about 1300 miles in a day but i have nothing to back that up with.

We figured since our company name was Long Ride Shields, that we should track down the owner of the record and give him a trophy and a new windshield.

 :)

Check out the IBA (iron Butt Association). Their starting ride is the Saddle sore 1000, or 1000 miles in 24 hours.
I have done it once, 1057 miles in 18.5 hours along with 2 friends.

I'm sure there are some on this forum that have done more.

I did all my "long rides" in the 70's and 80's on my '65 pan. Still more comfortable in the saddle than the new ones! IMHO
I was a lot younger then, and wanted to show all the Beemers and GoldThings that a Harley would make the routes! Broke down once (after the run!). 8)

We do a lot of 800 - 1000 mile days. 500 is like going after a loaf of bread. Longest was Chickasha, Oklahoma to Winslow, Arizonia and back (1628.7) in 23 hours 21 minutes raised a little over $6000.00 for a childrens charity planned it poorly hit the mountains in dark and it was cold even in June. Obviousley exceeded the speed limit was younger and crazier well younger anyway. Did not know about the ironbutt association then but did document it with fuel receipts and signatures and pics of all fuel stops.

There are a number of members that have done over 1000 miles non stop but most of us are getting to old for it now.  About 800 is the max for the wife and I and I don't want to do over 600 if I don't have to.

For an unknown reason, I can ride much further without getting sleepy than I can drive in a car before getting sleepy.  Don't know why that is except on a bike you're out there in the elements.....see, hear, feel and smell (sometimes the smell part isn't a good thing) things that you don't in a car.  Just more stimulation. :nixweiss:

In 1981, a buddy and I rode our bikes from Chico California trying to go non stop to Denver, CO.  We made it as far as Rabbitears Pass just out side of Steamboat Springs CO. It was about 2:00 A.M. when I dodged an animal in the road. I saw my buddies headlight bouncing up and down in the rear view mirror, and soon found out that the animal that he hit was a porcupine. Long story short, we stopped in the next town so he could clean his shorts, and spent the rest of the night on a bus depot bench, getting a little shut eye. . I do not know that exact mileage, but somewhere around 1100--1200 miles. I have since done a couple of 700 - 800 mile days, but in my old age, that will never happen again. 500 miles is about my max now days.  I am leaving on a fast trip tomorrow in my truck, but will be switching off driving with the wife. Going from Denver, CO to Medina, Ohio --  1340 miles and will not shut the truck off until we get there except to refuel. Will then immediately turn around pulling a trailer with a trike in it. Plan on two days to get back home. Not looking forward to the trip.

I've ridden a few 800-900 mile days solo. When the wife and I are out on extended trips we tend to keep it under 400 a day - of course we're allergic to interstates and ride predominately on secondary roads with lunch and dinner stops, to us nothing beats taking your time. We'll spend all day to travel 350 miles.

600-700 miles isn't too bad at all except when the heat is 100+ degrees. 800-900 is doable unless it's too hot or windy but it's not what I'd call comfortable when getting off the bike.

Did an iron butt ride about 9 years ago on a stock Harley seat, almost had saddle sores on my a$$.  500 or more is good in a day for me on my Corbin, could do more but why, I do it for enjoyment, when I am dead tired it is not enjoyable.

I agree, but 'age' seems to cut into it more than the other factors.  Just don't do the long day rides like before ...  seem to want to end the day on the road earlier and move on to the evening activities.  ;) har.  spyder

A few years back my wife and I rode our bikes across Utah & Nevada along Rte 50 (Loneliest Road in America) in one long day.

My wife was on her first rode trip on an Ultra (my old '97) and I was breaking in my new '05 SEEG.

Not sure how many miles it was, but I do still remember how sore my butt was... The '05 wasn't the only thing broken in!

As JC says, we're getting too old for those kind of miles and now we average around 500 or so on a good day.

I made that ride heading out of Reno in '97 and just wish I'd  bought the T-shirt (I survived the loneliest Rode in America)....at the time didn't feel like I had room for one more thing on the softtail.  Stayed in a very old hotel on that road (forget the name of the town, but remember that they had a cool ole knucklehead in the casino downstairs.  It was a silver mining town.)  I still have a cool chunk of raw Turquoise that a miner handed me at that ole hotel.  Beautiful country & friendly folks. ;)  spyder

600 - 700 a day on my RG is a good day.  With the cruise, XM, 6 gallon tank, that makes for a full day.  That leaves a couple of hours for a good dinner, a couple of cold ones, and a good nights sleep before doing it again the next day... One of the last great experiences - long distance motorcycle rides.  The sights, smells, sounds - nothing like it !!

Longest so far back to back - first day 1210 miles &  the next day 1194 miles for 2404 miles in 47 hours.  Documented 2 ways with receipts, etc. - Ironbutt & Long Distance Riders - on a 2007 HD CVO Ultra.  Trip was from Jacksonville Beach , FL to San Diego, CA.  Not sure will ever do that type of ride again - pretty tiring.  The more extreme version of that ride is a coast to coast to coast over 96 hours & yeah there are a lot of guys who have done that - 4 days consecutive over 1,000 miles each day.  Check out the Ironbutt site for the Ironbutt rides for the REAL high mileage riders.  http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/  The "10-10ths" ride for example.

Still do the occasional 1,000 mile day but not as much "just for fun" like I used to.

You collect a lot of windshield bugs on those days, usually.

depends on the sort of roads and time of year. While in summer via European Autobahn 1000 m a day are a piece of cake as you can ride 100 mph almost indefinitely you will never get even near that numbers on mountain roads especially in spring/autumn or if you got big cities in your way.

You got that right!
I rode the "California 1000" years ago......no freeways......no straight roads, all "mountains and meadows", in the fog, rain, etc. on twistie roads. Average speed= 20 mph!!!
Very tiring, but, hey, I was a lot younger then!! 8)

You probably stayed in Ely Nevada.

That was it Weasels.  In the old part of the town on the main drag.  Cool  hotel, owner let me park right in the front of the main door and said his night security would watch my scooter all night.  Had a great steak in the little bar & slept like a baby upstairs in one of those little rooms.  No telling who slept there before me...very old place dating back to wild west days & photos on all walls to depicit those times.  I really wanted that knucklehead..it was bone stock & looked like it had been cared for over the years.  If I remember correctly, it was a 'prize' for one of the games in the casino.  (even I knew not to expect to be able to have a chance to win that one.. ::).har!)  spyder

That is pretty impressive averaging 69.75 MPH over almost 24 hours.

That could only be done in rural western territories.........

Or the fact that you most certainly will die if you fall asleep on a motorcycle.

in a car the "wake up strips" will help or the shoulder.

Motorcycle margin just that much thinner

Longest ride:  Bluefield, WV, to Daytona--676 miles in about 12 hrs.  But that was 1991, when I was 40.  Now, I can do around 400 a day pretty easy.  I think.    Later--HUBBARD

My longest ride/hardest was not impressive as far as mileage but did 650 miles in the pouring rain going up 95.

That day could not come to an end fast enough.

hey Keats, totally agree on I-95 in the rain.....it's a beech anytime in my book.  spyder

1101 miles...  19 hours and about the last half of it in and out of rain.

650 in the pouring rain. To tough for me would only try that if no other choice at all. A long ride is not necessarily a hard ride and yes you are right out here in the wide open wild west we can run 100+ for miles and miles not one of the smartest choices but can do it.

1982 on 1981 Sturgis - 1,027 miles in 18 hours (Macomb, IL to Morrison, CO)
1990 on 1956 Panhead - 1,337 miles in 25 hours (Sturgis to Fullerton)
2005 on 2004 SEEG – 1,020 miles in 20 hours (Fullerton to Denver)
2006 on 2004 SEEG - 960 miles in 16 hours (Macomb to Deadwood)
These days anything over 600 gets a little squirmy.

Interesting discussion.  The most I've ever done is 920 miles on my SEUC, and I'm certainly tired but with a good nights sleep, I could do it again the next day. I'm not sure how many consecutive dasy I could keep it up, but I'd say comfortably 600 miles per day would probably be about right for a long duration.

On the Deuce, I'm dying after 300-400. In fact, I bought the SEUC becaure that thing was killing me.

Last fall, I rode 1260 miles from Tampa to Iowa in 21 hours.  The last 6 were cold and dark!  There was frost on the truck when I pulled into the driveway.

Also have done a SS1K with IBA cert, and a SS2K (back to back 1K days), but didn't send in the docs.

I like riding long and hard!   :bananarock:

Makes for good reading but NEVER ride XXX miles because someone on the internet said they did/can/do.  Ride until you want to stop, then do so.

900 miles on a sporty..................WOW

I had a windshield, highway pegs, a Mustang seat, with a bag on the back seat for a backrest...so it was a bit better than a 'bare' Sporty.

Thanks for the thread link. There are so many topics and threads on this site that I have a hard time keeping up. I will try and meet up with DesertHog on Sunday, this is the first time for making the Red River Run for some reason, although I have been there before when the run was not happening. I always had something else booked I guess. Nice rides up there, quaint little town.

Terry and I are good for 500 miles these days...getting old. We get going at sunup and like to end up at our destination by mid afternoon and enjoy the local food and sights and meeting up with our CVO family when we can. We have done 450 in the pouring rain and the only good thing I can say about that is "you can only get so wet, and thats it".  Doc

Depends on how far the food and adult beverages are to get to...

After that 3rd tank of gas I am ready for a killer buffet or some sort of mega snack, bout eleventeen adult style beverages or a few bottles of vino and then a stogie n bourbon consumed whilst barefoot.   ;D

Midland/Odessa, Tx airport to just outside of Annapolis, MD a few years back.  Stopped only for gas for the bike and gas for me.  Just under 1700 miles and about 27 hours on a sport bike.  Don't have to ride fast, just consistent.

That's a fact.  My buddy who rides a lot of the Iron Butt events tells me the key is time management.  Short stops for liquid in - liquid out - nourishment - quick night naps.  Never spend more than ten minutes at a gas stop.  He's an animal!

Speeding (excessive) does not help me on a long ride because:

More gas used means more gas stops.  More gas stops equals more time not moving.

Wind and road fatigue are greater at higher speeds

X factor on accidents, breakdowns increases exponentially

The Ironbutt web page is a great resource for those considering long rides.  A common mistake is to burn it up as fast as you can.  May work for some but not me or groups I have ridden with.

Plus, over 85 mph, the fairing monkey screeches like a little bastard.   8)

for us 100 mph (an Autobahn either with or without speed limit as that's in fact just about 150 km/h and still affordable if you get ticketed over here) is the best compromise between speed, comfort and economy. You are fast enough not to be an obstacle for the cars, safely below the "wobble zone" for older frames and still can listen to your music, have a smoke and chat on telephone. I get around 200m out of a tank at that speed and that's ok with me, after 2 hours a little stroll is always welcome  ;)

My wife did the Iron butt 1500 two years ago, the 1500 in 36 hours.

Last year on he way out to sturgis we did 750 in one day, much of the ride was in 99 to 101 degree weather.

There are a lot of pros and cons about long rides, but to each his own.  I have two iron butt certificates, but my best is Milwaukee to Dallas stopping for gas, eating off the shelf.

I did the Iron Butt--1042 miles. Started 3:30 AM and finished at 8:30 PM. It was OK, but wouldn't do two of those on two consecutive days.  For an extended trip 400-600 is a good day depending on the roads and what we want pictures of. Even then, 300 for a day is more enjoyable. You see more and get to experience the people in the area.

Riding back to San Diego, CA  from Omaha, NE a couple of years ago I did two 1,000 mile 12 hours riding days back to back. Left Omaha at 6 AM on Monday and was in San Diego at 7PM Tue for dinner. Stopped in Grand Junction for a few hours sleep on the way. As I passed over the mountians in CO I hit a blizzard and white out and couldn't even see the ground but had no place to stop so had to keep going. The next day passing Las Vegas it was 103 degrees.

I actually tried it yesterday, I don't think it did anything for me. I did better flipping up the helmet and chomping on some jerky and drinking some water.

Isn't that the same as going from one side of Houston to the other and back?  :huepfenjump3:

Nope you need to cross you're home state twice in one day. In fact I may circumnavigate the entire state today, :huepfenlol2:

Now there is an "iron butt" ride.

you would have to ride Westerly to Provincetown 6 times to get to 1000 miles

Something is wrong in having a State that is not big enough to even right the name on a map!

South to North may take 12 hrs, though!

Last summer I went out to Taos, NM to party with some friends. On the way home, I rode straight through from Enid, Ok. to home (Greenville, SC).
That's about 1100 miles.

The summer before I got a wild hair and took off to Kansas City for the All Harley Drags one Friday afternoon.
My buddy lives there and was rubbing it in my face that he was going.  That's right at 1000 miles, most of which was in the dark.
Looking back, maybe not the smartest thing I've ever done.  Straight through both ways, though Sunday was mostly during the day.

I haven't got to try the new CVO out yet but we threw down couple of 400 mile rides (Like Butter). The wife and I could only go about 500 miles/day MAX on our '03 Deuce.

Can't wait to sit on this machine for a whole day!

Last year my wife had to present some information in San Antonio. My buddy from Bismark, ND rode and she flew. We planned to ride until we got tired and stop. Thursday afternoon at 3:30 we left and rode 400 miles ending up in Ft Scott, KS. The next day we figured we would ride somewhere into TX via Shreveport, LA. After leaving KS at 5:30am we decided the everything was going well so we just rode and rode and rode. We got to San Antonio at 11:00 pm, 890 miles later. The next day we were shot. After a couple of days of R&R we rode back home. I agree with JCZ it was a stimulation over load. We seen and experienced many things in 18hrs. Safety needs to come first, after 18hrs I know that I cold have ran the last 110 miles to make the 1000 in 24. At distances over 700 miles there isn't any time to stop and dilly dally. It was a great trip, but I did have some very sore parts after those two days. Looks like I need to get in better riding shape.
Supershooter

My SEUC only had 1100 miles on it when we left, and my buddy rode a Victory King Pin. He was talking trash about getting saddle sore, but after this trip he found out that his butt got sore after a big day too.

I'm still learning. On my Springer, it was about 300-400. On the Street Glide, 550 is best to-date. I get the aches after about 400 and twist and turn for a comfortable spot even with pegs. A good stretch helps. Some impressive numbers posted.

I find a point on a long trip, an hour  or so into it, where i wonder what the heck I'm doing, all packed up, hearth and home behind me, road ahead.  Then, all of a sudden, lost in America.  Just me and my bike  Wouldn't be any other place.

Great thread.

I've found that an AirHawk cushion really helps when you hit the 400 mi. mark. It takes care of the sore butt and makes riding farther a lot easier, and less fatiguing.

A firm seat will amaze you. A couple years ago when i bought/installed my first Corbin Dual Touring seat I was pretty concerned that i blew away $700 because the seat was/is extremely firm. In fact i almost returned it. But after reading a few threads here stating how everyone loved them, i kept the seat. On my first road trip with this seat i was totally amazed how comfortable a firm seat is on the long hall. I remember many times riding on the stock seat where i thought i would never make another mile but this never happens with my Corbin. For anyone thinking a firm seat wont be comfortable on the hall, think twice - dont shy away until you have tried one.    :2vrolijk_21:

Makes it easier to shift sitting position plus you ride cooler.  I use it on 300+ mile days - not needed (for me) on less than that.  Plus with the Air Hawk do not have to spend big $$$ on a new seat.

Besides the cooler ride it absorbs road vibrations.  Usually feel better at the end of the riding day.

I can do 500 plus miles with no problem but the passenger on the back will not be very happy about it ! So any long distance rides are solo!!!

my longest day was 790 miles , in summer on the way to Sturgis.   I doubt I'll ever make an Iron Butt.

I typically keep it to 3-400 miles a day if I'm riding for more than a few days, as I get older I  enjoy spending more time at the various destinations to savor the experience.

I just did 1066 yesterday with a stock seat. The first 6 were fine, 600 to 800 were difficult, 800 to the house was all willpower. Stock seat, stock windscreen. This is not something that I care to repeat too frequently. I thought the stock seat was pretty OK and had resigned to using it until yesterday somewhere around the middle of nowhere and the 600 mile mark. A Corbin is in my future but I am going to wait until my wife is in town so we can go down there together to get the seat made.

I did 565 on a Corbin yesterday,my backsidestill hurts like hell. I wish Mustang made a seat for this.
I know this is far from IronButt material, Butt i have no desire to do 1000 miles in one day.
Have a lot of respect for those who do.

Not quite that far was a little over 1400 from DC made a few miles then stopped on Sunday nite but once got the bit tween my teeth the cruise just kept clicking the miles. A friend of mine from NYC did 6800 during the same time frame as I did the 3800 or so
