Looking for windscreen suggestions...
« on: May 11, 2010, 07:46:38 AM »

OK, here is the situation....

I did some interstate riding this weekend, about 300 miles at 70 to 90 mph...

Well the stock wind deflector seems to make the wind hit me right in the eyes and forehead.  I usually wear a half helmet and I swear the wind was way worse than I ever had on my crossbones without any windshield.  I thought a touring bike would be better, but this thing made it hard for me to stay focused.  Thought my eyes were going to vibrate out of the sockets!  :huepfenjump3:

So a friend suggested I look into a taller windscreen.  I am 6'1" and rather than experiment by buying different size screens I thought I'd ask for suggestions from people I know have experienced this.  I don't want to ruin the look of the bike with a real tall screen and would like to go with a tinted screen too.  Plus I still have the crappy stock seat on my bike with the damn gap, no bumpers, and my dealer is supposed to be getting me the replacement seat but I haven't heard anything from them yet about when I will get it.  I hope it sets me a little higher, I feel like I am sitting in a hole compared to the crossbones with it's spring seat and tons of leg room.

Thanks for all the great info I always get on here...   :2vrolijk_21:

I'm very fond of the Clearview with the recurve on my Street Glide.  I'm 5' 10" and use the 6.5"  , there is a 8" that may be better for you.

There is a forum discount.

Freedom shields in the vendor discount section looks very promising.   ;)

I really like the looks and the price of these.  I just need to know what height to order.   :2vrolijk_21:

http://harleyshields.com/   is what I use, very happy with it and with the price. Three models, I used the classic flip on a couple bikes here. 10" on my Ultra trike, 8" on my SESG.  5' 11". I also put the adjustable fairing shields on which helps the side wind. 1/2 helmet, no buffeting.

This is a front end look at both on the Tequila. Both are dark tint.

I've used the Klockwerks 6.5 on both my FLHX's, and have been happy with it.  With your height, I would recommend their new 8.5" model.

I use the Windvest 8", I'm 6'4" and I'm very happy with it.   The wife uses the 6" Windvest and she's happy with it. :2vrolijk_21:

I use a clearveiw, 6.5, smoked with recurve. Very happy with it. I'm 6 feet with 32" inseam. The air goes over my head. With the stock sheild it would hit just below the eyes, blow my glaases off. Also still using stock seat.

Part of my purchase was that the dealer was to install the 6.5 klockwerks. They installed it today and I will report the results. I'm 6-0. After the ride home it seemed to help alot but that's only 8 miles.

6.5" Klockwerks here and below 45 mph which is all I have experience with seems to get rid of most of the buffeting. I will post higher speeds when I experience them.

Racerdj originates from the mid 1990's when I raced a Vintage 1979 Formula Atlantic March with a four cylinder Cosworth. It seems like my prior life. We ran Mid Ohio, Road America, Watkins Glen, Seebring, Road Atlanta, Homestead, West Palm Beach and other tracks.

Replaced stock screen with 6.5" Clearview with recurve. Eliminated buffeting on the helmet (I'm 6'). Still was getting beat up by airflow under the fairing, especially with feet on highway pegs. Added adjustable wind deflectors to fairing and eliminated the problem, even on the highway.

Finally tested at 75 and it works for me. Does not solve the buffeting 100% but probably 90% which is acceptable.

I bought the 9.5" windshield for my SESG from F4 Customs.  They have all sizes from short to 15" tall.  I bought the tinted version with their speed coating and what they say about being unable to scratch the windshield, when cleaning is absolutely true.  There's no recurves or anything to their windshields, but I'm 6'4" tall and the 9.5" works perfectly for me.  No buffeting of the helmet.  I'm very happy with it.

just another opinion, but I use two different clearview shields with the recurve. I like the 8" for local riding and the 9 1/2 inch for highway trips because of rain. They both work perfectly delivering the wind and rain "over" my helmet.

however, air coming from other directions were very annoying on the SG for me. So, I put the two adjustable wings on the side of the batwing, and installed the metal scoop between the forks that redirect the air downward. now it is like riding in a car. No rain or air when not wanted and better air flow if you open the wings and direct that fairing air flow towards you.

I do get an occasion scratch from rocks being thrown up, etc. but I bought the clearview kit which has three grades of scratch removal and polish ability. that stuff works wonders. I even used it to take the scratches out of a softail shield after dropping the stupid thing on a gravel road...

just installed the 9 in. freedom shield on my ultra after trying 3 different shields from another sponsor. the freedom shield is definitely the superior windshield.  no wind or buffeting. would recommend it over any other one out there.

I don't know if GtreetSlide replied to you Hawg, but I think he was referring to this:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441845999&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302290755&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302290755&bmUID=1274930337950&bmLocale=en_US
:pepper: :cucumber: :apple: :orange: :2vrolijk_21:
Thanks. yes, that is the part. the parts guys told me it came on some bikes way back but they stopped installing them due to heat problems with the motors. He told me I should take it off when temps get high 90's but I have run it in 107 degree desert heat with no problems. Of course my bike is tuned to run cooler and I don't have lowers either. One thing I can say is that it really stops that updraft on my SG. If I want a breeze I just position the side wings to aim it back at me. All buffetting issues disappeared with the baffle, wings, and taller shield. Almost like being in a car with the windows closed. Also keeps most of the water off during rains as well..

Hey GtreetSlide,

What seat do you have on your bike?  I would really like to change this stock CVO junk seat for something with more padding, taller and more passenger pillion.  That one looks good.

Thanks

Has anyone tried the Vstream windshield from National Cycle?

Hey GtreetSlide,

What seat do you have on your bike?  I would really like to change this stock CVO junk seat for something with more padding, taller and more passenger pillion.  That one looks good.

Thanks

It's just a plain old HD Sundowner for SGs... Comfortable enough for me, the stock seat was like sitting on a board..
