Tour Pack issues
« on: February 10, 2012, 04:32:34 PM »

Just got a solo tour pack rack and although I am still waiting for the tour pack to get here, I wanted to see how easily the rack goes on to the bike.....and all I can say is IT DOESN"T......it's almost like the shocks are not spaced out enough for the bracket to fit. I had to bang on the rack to even get it to fit on the bike. Anybody else run into this??  Maybe I should space the shocks out a bit with a washer? The bracket is on now and maybe if I leave it there it will "adjust" itself and be easier in a few days?

The solo mount goes on fine.  My two up mount....another story.  I have to spread the legs of the mount just a fraction of an inch to get it to go down over the nylon docking points.   :nixweiss:

Spreading would be easier....I have to figure out how to squeeze the front section when the tour pack is bolted up.

Ya know.....maybe I have it backwards.  I'll have to check when I get home.   :nixweiss:  I use my solo tour pack 95% of the time and don't have issues with it, it's just the two up that's off a bit.  But now that I'm thinking about it, I don't remember which way.

I'm just in the process of doing the same and put the rack on by itself and yes it is tight, and that's the new "09A" and I still nicked the paint putting it on  :nervous: so have to be real careful, may have to take the grinder to "massage" it a bit.

Where are you going to grind???  I was thinking to space the shocks out a little bit.....

Sure wouldn't want to be riding down the road with a rattling tour pack.

But it sure could have been designed better, that's for sure!

I wouldn't do anything to "fix it" until I tried it with the Tp bolted to it. The pressure the bolts will put on it may change things slightly. If it's still off a little, seems like a simple bend here or there wouldn't be difficult. Just go slow as it may only take 1 or 2 degrees to correct the fit.

Not sure if this helps, but I had a similar problem with the detachable sissy bar on my '07 SERK. Easily solved by releasing all the docking points slightly, fit the bar and re-tighten the docking points. I know the docking points design differs on the SG, but if its possible to release the docking points it may be worth a try.

Waiting for delivery of my Hot Citrus on March 1 (pleased Feb is a short month!) and as I've ordered a king TP to match this could be an issue on the horizon.

But Feb will seem like it's two months long. :nixweiss:

Then when you get it, you'll be going out to the garage in the middle of the night just to look at it.  Don't worry, it's all normal. :2vrolijk_21:

On the subject of tour pack mounts, not sure on the later models, but on my 2004 the nylon bushings often wear resulting in the tour pack rattling.  Some replace the existing HD bushings and some have found alternate bushings made of aluminum. I recently purchased some made in stainless steel by AMS.  They work beautifully and look good too!  Attached their link below

Would be a good idea, however the problem is with the fron mounts and they connect directly to the mounting of the rear shocks......no moving those. I'm thinking a little shaving of the front bracket bushing is in order to get it to fit around the shock mount easier.

Akready have the bushings for the rear mounts...never did like the plastic ones.
