Wow Jim! Cool! Thanks for the pics! All saved too now!!! :2vrolijk_21:

Now that I see what my bike looked like when I bought it (although I'll never see it that way in person), It'll be nice to see it again when you're done, the way I'll actually receive it. The same photo spread after the mods would be really cool if ya could pull that off!!! ;)

Thanks for everything Jim! Give Joy a hug for me!!! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

Don't worry on the 'certification' Brian, just get the State or whoever it is to give you an 'extension' on the previous one for a few years. You know they've got some 'loophole' in the 'rules'.   :-X har!  :drink: spyder

Yeap spyde! Cycle Shack M Pipes, TD 1-3/4" slash cuts with heat shields! A proven performer on an 80" Evo with an S&S Super E, Dyna Programmable Ign Module, Single-fire coils, accel plug wires. Should go good for now, even with that CA cam. But when the good cam goes in, a little head porting and compression gets added, it'll run great! ;)

When I was reading the listing, it said that everything was original. I was wondering about that shield. Was it OEM?

Aftermarket as Brian said. So are the forward controls. I wanna fit myself to the bike, but I think it'll go back to the stock mid-controls. They were included too. She supposedly had everything! ;)

Hoist,

Just a quick point, the turn signals on the bike are the ones being used on twin cams.....you probably know this, but they are not the stock ones that come on the bike....I know you mentioned somewhere lol that Joy has all of the "oem" parts....so I am sure they are in the box....and I must say this is the first time I have seen a "CVO" FXR with these turn signals and they look great!!!!!!

UPDATE  08-08-08:
IF YOU GO TO "Value of a 1999 FXR2" Thread reply #349 DOES SHOW A PHOTO THAT DOES HAVE THE STOCK TURN SIGNALS....so that picture is out of sync with the other photos you have.  All other photos show the "newer" style "twin cam" turn signals......

LoL,

I like the blue windshield.....but anyway.....if you decide you want something different Hoist or for anyone on this matter....an option to everyone is putting on the "quick release" set up for a 2003 Dyna Low Rider FXDL [I mention the 2003 Dyna Low Rider only because I previously owned one and when I sold the FXDL in 2007 I took the "quick release" parts as well as the "windshield" which I actually never used on the FXDL lol....and so I took the quick release parts off of the 2003 FXDL and moved them over to the FXR and everything fits perfectly inclusive of the windshield.....so that's always an option if anyone is interested.....

If for some reason anyone wants the part numbers I still have them and can put them into this thread.....

UPDATE:
58164-96A    39 MM Detachable  Windshield Hardware Kit    56.00 (2002 price)
58112-96       Detachable Winshield                               227.96 (2002 price)

HeHe! You really don't get out of this Board much, do ya Tim? ;D ;D ;D

Jim, is hd-dude and Joe is CVOJOE on the site. I only know them thru CVOHarley! I travel around and have met many members from the site. I've stayed in their homes as they've stayed in mine. Many great relationships and friendships developed here. All because of this great site. And that's because of the people. The people make the site, but the site is the vehicle we have in common to be here, the love of our CVO Motorcycles! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Jim has opened a bike shop in Hayward, CA, and just celebrated his first anniversary at the new shop. Joe lives about 20 mi away from the seller. I've been out to CA last fall and visited and rode with a buncha great members out there. We all keep in touch with each other, and we know someone's out there should we need some help.

Well these guys stepped up and offered to help. Not many people I'd trust to check out a bike for me. I still can't believe I bought one without seeing it. But in Jim's hands, I knew I had nothing to worry about. The bike was as advertised and they took it away at the time they looked at it.

Jim's an excellent wrench and knows his electronics. He's one of the site electronics gurus and helps everyone that asks. He also offers members a 10% discount on anything you want to order from him. So the bike's in his capable hands now, getting the minimum Hoist changes I know I need for me (not a small list), sight unseen, to be able to start riding it the minute it shows up in NYC!

And the funniest part of all.......................................hd-dude is a CVOHarley Global Moderator. How'd ya miss this? :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: ;D ;D ;D ;)

Tim

That I would have never noticed! Great eye! :2vrolijk_21:

Regards,

Tim

This shield will be removed. Don't usually use a W/S on street bikes. If I need one for a trip, I can put it back on. Rare chance that might happen. But if you have the parts list handy, by all means. It will come in helpful to someone! ;)

Hey I am doing the best I can to keep up with this "whirl wind" your right....I use to go over to the SEFLHRCI area here in the CVO site...but I really settled into this area [FXR] since this is what I really enjoy.....Besides, you pretty well settled into your serk now and are just riding it.....and I have pretty much got my FLHRCI the way I want it....so my attention turns to the passion of the FXR....and watching what is exactly happening right here.....I have a buddy that's a member here that doesn't post but reads here.....and he is excited to see what's going to be shared next, he owns a FXR3 and is the "responsible" person for introducing me to the "FXR" way back for me in the fall of 2002.  I didn't listen and had to purchase a 2003 FXDL....you know the 100th Century "excitement"....the only thing I loved about that bike besides the custom paint was that I put a 95" engine into it.....and then when I decided to sell it last Spring I took 90 hours and switched my both engines...ie: 2003 FXDL 95" and a 2002 RKC FLHRCI stock engine and flipped the two engines doing 90% of the work myself....and both engines ran on first turn over....so now my 2002 RKC has the 95" engine in it and what I felt "emotionally" about the FXDL is now in my RKC.  Here is a picture of those two bikes together, [I will leave the photos up for a bit I Know this thread is about your bike....so I will discard the photo in a day or so....lol] ....I could care less about the FXDL now....no REMORSE....lol just HAPPY to have the ENGINE....that's what I felt about that bike....lol

Cool idea on the engine swap! Did you just swap top ends, or pull the motors? If the motors, any problems with the case numbers?

Just curious. Maybe I should swap out the 89" S&S motor from my Pro Street with my new Blue 3! ;D

Most folks go about their business here and stick with boards that are of interest to them. They're even very active in those boards like yourself. There's also a decent size social aspect to the site as well. But some won't notice or pay attention to that aspect. Not surprising at all with almost 6000 strangers here (and none stranger than me!) But some of us don't remain strangers. The social aspect is just as much fun as the bike aspect for me now. I have lifelong friendships with folks I've met here. And I wouldn't have Joy if it weren't for this great site!

I wasn't trying to imply anything negative to you, so I hope it wasn't taken that way at all. Just having some fun, and trying to explain a little about the other attributes of this great site!

I hear ya on the Dyna too. I had a '95 Dyna Convertible. Bike handled great and ran well too. But there was something missing. The thing I get when I ride my '85 FXWG. That's why that bike will be with me forever. Same with Cybil. I'm sure I'll feel that way about the BLUE 3 too!

The Moderators basically keep the site organized. Yeah, they have to be the cops too. But we're not the big bad biker crowd we portend to be! We let em off easy! ::) ;D ;)

Hoist....nah you didn't imply anything negative at all....LOL I know it's really quit humorus as to what you pointed out.....I just get "tunneled" vision....lol....your point was great....like, ummm he is the MODERATOR....laughing....yep....lol oh lol sorry....too funny.

Did you just swap top ends, or pull the motors? If the motors, any problems with the case numbers?

I removed cylinders and of course the pistons....I kept the "pistons" within the "walls" of the cylinders as well, by having myself and 3 other sets of hands there (total of 4 guys) we took the wrist pins from each piston and flipped them all from one engine to the other....that way new rings were not required or rehoning either....it was of course the "most" delicate portion of the "flip".  Also changed the cams in each respective bike flipping to the other as well.  The total cost of the flip was $175.00 and that was for all of the gaskets for both bikes....so basically $87.50 per bike....I of course learned a lot by doing this....I essentially took two engines part [from the jugs up as well as the cams for both bikes] and put them all back together.  You are correct, this afforded me the ability to not mess with the "cases".  Oh and about 3 weeks ago, I put 3.37 gearing into my RKC removing the 3.15 gearing....which I TOTALLY ENJOY...it really WOKE up what I did with the engine flip as well....Did you know that the "final" gearing even for a 1985 FXRS Low Glide came with 3.37 gearing.  Now this may be something you want to do to create some more power although I participated on a thread which was quite interesting on this matter as well....I must say however that I DO like the gearing on our "CVO" bikes which is different from all previous FXR's.  The "CVO" FXR's do have 2.925 final gearing and no other FXR's have that.

Cool Tim, we all have our "tunnelvision" moments too! ;D ;D ;D

Ah, so you performed an economical "displacement swap"! Great idea. Why give that stuff away with the bike with no value, when you can use it elswhere. Great idea.

Thanks for the info on the gearing. I heard the CVO FXR's have good gearing. I'd like to see how the bike feels. HeHe! All this stuff and I haven't even ridden this bike yet! ;D

I'll see how it feels, but with that CA cam in it, not sure I'll be feeling an accurate representation of how the bike can run. But won't be doing cams right away. So I hope with all the Stage 1 stuff I'm doing, it will wake it up enough for me to live with for awhile. But wih a 110", 115 HP big sister, I might find myself in need of an additional power infusion! I feel a CVO FXR cam thread coming on! ::) ;)

Yes, those turn signals look good, but i still prefer the larger stock ones for visibility. windvest windshields are nice looking, harley ones look clunky compared to them. If you want to get rid of the windvest, to another blue rider..let me know, may come in handy..for our winter rides in alabama. hehe

Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous.....

Ok I am looking at those "OEM" handlebars.....and thinkin Howie is going to go down the highway on his Cybil....with 12.5" Apes and 36" width bars....and I know he is going to be making another change immediately....to either one of two handlebars.....that I discuss in the handlebar thread......nods head most definitely.....those bars are 28.5" wide....lol....vs aprx 36" wide.....better get those bars and stuff ordered along with brake lines.....in fact if you want to know what I am talking about.....two days before she arrives.....spend some specific time on Cybil then when Joy shows up you will know most definitely.

 :bananarock:

Regards,

Tim

HeHe! You got that right Tim! I need to have the bike to do the bars. I've a few things in mind, but can't pull the trigger til I sit on it. Or any related parts. Once I ride it, I should know what I need. Changing those indicator lights will be the biggest challenge. I'd like to flush mount them into the console. Still looking for ideas to get them out of the riser clamp! :2vrolijk_21:

No,but they are "stuck" onto the fender....they can be pulled off but given the age of the paint and how long they have been there i'll let you pull them off........

Howie, ok I get it that you might not like them, you know a "taste" sort of thing...but what are you looking for, I mean what would you have preferred.....something more elaborate????  The indicator lights on a FX, FXR, or on a Dyna for that matter have never been of "elegance" anyway....they were always seen as a necessary "basic" element....nothing more nothing less.....now saying that I don't intend to change your mind.....lol that's not my point....I am just curious what you would have found appropriate......

BTW, am I stuck with those ugly reflectors that are mounted on the rear fender?

ABSOLUTELY NOT....smiles....they come off EASILY with dental floss and 5 minutes of going up and down the area above the reflector with a hair dryer or heat gun.....very simply then take some "rubbing alcohol lightly on a soft rag to pick up any "gummy" residue and rewax.....
COMES OFF EASY.  I have done it.

UPDATE:
That bike has been in a garage for most of it's life.....in a "cool" garage....smiles....with heat that stuff will come loose like it's no tomorrow....with dental flosss.....wait a minute this was suppose to be an "UPDATE" and all I am doing is repeating myself.....Ownership is a BEAUTIFUL THING......all of the decisions we get to make....LOOKS AT YOU AND HANDS YOU THE HEAT GUN....you know what to do......and begins to do my best impression from Water Boy with Adam Sandler.....yououuu cannnnnnn dddddooooooo ittttttttttttt!!!!

Regards,

Tim

Nothing elaborate Tim. I just want them gone from the riser clamp. I thought cutting them into the console would get them out of the way. Any other suggestions, ideas, or pics, are surely welcome!!! :2vrolijk_21:

The reflector, well, that's what I first thought about when I saw where it was. But Jim's got a point about it being on that paint for nine years. We'll see how daring I feel! ;)

Let's see, that's five . . .

No rubber covers on the throttle cables - new?
Ooohhh, Pingel petcock
Do I see teets on the rear tire?

Eight?

I wouldn't worry about damaging the paint, Howie.  It was only about 6 months ago that I finally removed the same reflectors off of my rear fenders.  I used monofilament fishing line and they came right off.  Age degrades the double-sided foam tape that's used to attach these things--t gets "crumbly".  Then I used Goo Gone to remove the remaining foam and adhesive residue.  It was a breeze and you'd never know they were ever there.  Same for the curved reflectors on the front frame down tubes.

S&S should be a lever above the A/C (that would be called an enrichener not a choke)

Stock knob says "CHOKE," and has the choke symbol on it ( "|/|" )though H-D does like to refer to it as an "enrichener." :nixweiss:  I think I see the S&S lever in this photo:

yup, can see it there. with S&S it doesnt choke off the air, it lets addidtional fuel in, hence enrichener

Hmmm.  Even stupid owners manual refers to it as an enrichener . . .

"CONSTANT VELOCITY (C.V.) CARBURETOR
ENRICHENER - A constant velocity carburetor uses an
'enrichener' instead of a 'choke.'  An enrichener is
operated almost the same way as a choke except there
are two differences:

  • When starting a cold engine, the throttle control MUST
BE CLOSED for the enrichener to work properly.
  • The enrichener does not have detents.  The enrichener
knob position can be adjusted from full in to full out."

Yet they put "CHOKE" on the knob :confused5: :nixweiss: :-\ :zwtf:

That's probably why he can use a Pingel petcock.  When I tried it on mine, the fuel line ran right into the choke cable.  It's close even with the stock petcock.  Although, this picture also looks like there's more room on his 3 than on my 2. :nixweiss:  Has the coil been slightly moved forward somehow?

S&S carb's have always had an enrichner.
No need for a choke button.
Current design is a lever that's pulled up.
Earlier models had a brass plunger that was lifted and turned.
I had one on my 1988 Classic with Andrews cams and Paucho exhaust.
Ahhh the good ol days before the internet!

Even if the internet says a mikuni is better.
An S&S on an EVO is a given!

Runs well, I did not have a bunch of saddle time, only a few miles to get the carb dialed in. The bike is quick and runs great with the "M" pipes, S&S carb and the new "single fire" Dyna 2000P ignition system (this is not the 8th item as it is not visbible). I really like the bike and sure have enjoyed having it here to look at and talk about, it a great conversation piece. We don't see very many FXR's around here anymore. 90-95% of the bikes that come throught the shop are baggers.

I had a S&S carb on a 2003 Dyna Low Rider.....I wasn't especially fond of it....it was nothing special.....personally I feel the cv carbs are just as great and no money spent....as for a Mikuni...well....when someone gets it dialed in right they seem to make most happy but at the end of the day find someone that can make them dial in right.....I have read more posts about how to get them dialed in....just seems like it's more complicated than it's worth....

There are just some things not worth messing with....and so on down the highway I go.......

UPDATE:
I recently found this discussion over on an EVO thread in this forum, I felt it further states what I was trying to say.......on this issue I side with REDFXR2 us FXR2 boys need to stick together....LOL...anyway for those reading this thread for the first time here is some additional thoughts on the CV carb vs S&S vs Mikuni....lol just as in anything in life we all have flavors....have some ice cream and see, LOL anyway....if you so desire, click, view, and read...this is a pretty good discussion:

Thanks a lot Tim! :2vrolijk_21:

I've always taken the stock CV's off and used an S&S. I love em! First off, IMO, NOTHING looks better than an HD motor with that S&S Teardrop A/C assembly on it! NOTHING!!! second, they are easy to tune once you get familiar with them. I've ridden on trips that range from sea level to 10,000 ft, and never had to rejet. I even carried spare jets expecting to have to do so. But it ran fine. I just tweaked the mixture screw a little to lean it out a some at high elevation, the set it back at normal elevation.

I'll have my first Mikuni on the 110' RevTech on my FXWG because it came with the engine. I'll see how I like it then. But if I like it, I'll keep it and change the A/C backplate to accomodate and S&S Teardrop A/C! I was running it on my SERK too with the DPP w/ S&S backplate, but I had to remove it when I went to the 62mm TB. Nothing with a stock bolt pattern works with that TB. ;)

Howie,

I hope you don't mind but a few of us NorCal folks went on a poker run yesterday and high hand won your FXR.  Thanks Jim for the great donation!  :huepfenjump3:

Don't worry Howie.  Your bike raised a bunch of money...

As I said earlier an S&S is just the right thing to do on an EVO.
On Nancy's 03 Dyna  there is a Mikuni 42.                      HP / T
With Tman heads, cams, pistons (CP) and ProPipe it's at 126/121
And Nancy rodes it like she stole it!
