Freedom Wings
« on: June 11, 2005, 11:04:43 PM »

Here's a product getting some good reviews on another website (Harley Electra Glide Garage).  They're called Freedom Wings and look like they might be a good option for those both seeking relief from the heat and protection from the cold and/or rain.  Just thought I'd pass along for what it's worth.  Here's a link to their site: Freedom Wings

No interference at all. I would suggest using some teflon washers were they attach to the fairing. The brackets will scratch the paint.

At least in concept I like those alot.  How "closed" do they close and how well do they stay closed going down the road at either moderate (or even immoderate) speeds?

I put a set on my bike and they work great! Keeps the wind off of you when adjusted flat and when you turn them in it brings cool air into your arms and chest.

They stayed closed for me at over 100mph! There are screws that you can tighten to keep them in place. Here are a few pics but please excuse the dirty bike!

LOve they way they look. Juts ordered a set. Tell me what size teflon washers would you need. Also will the washers loosen the bolts once they are installed?

Somebody should approach them about a CVO Owner's Site discount.  Explain that we'll post an "ad" in our "for Sale" forum and that it will stay there as long as they're willing to offer something like a 10% discount for members of this site.

I actually think the reflective Kuryakyns would look good on the screamin chicken.  I will stop by the local K dealer and take a look.  This is a great idea for those of us in hot climates.  Thanks  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

I'd be interested in seeing a couple better pictures of the Kuryaken ones look like.....especially on a SEEG.

103,

That is hugely useful, thank you. I was just missing the stock ones that were on the Ultra and was considering adding them.

I will await everyone's comments before choosing now. [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Here are a few shots of the freedom wings I just put on tonight. It took me less the 15 minutes and a Michlobe Ultra, but it took me an hour to go to Home Depot and get teflon washers to put between the braket and the painted fairing. Highly reccomended to use Teflon or rubber washers when adding wings to the bike since the SEEG's are painted

Enjoy!

Have the bag off due to a rock comeing ip and chipping the paint of the bag just near the support bar, its  the size of 1/4 of a dime. I have been in touch up mode with that bag now for 3 days. The reuslts are it came out pretty dam good just waiting for the top coat to dry before I sand one more time and pit a second coat on of the touch up paint. I will try to post pictures if I don't forget

I believe the screws are 10/32 screws X 3/4" long, but I will check for sure at lunch and post the result...   The Harley wings came with the screws, but the freedom wings did not have them.    Nice quality item too, they look just about like the harley item, but the functionality is head and shoulders above...    [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Caution / If the wings are opened really wide they will contact the tank when the bars are swung full left to lock the forks.

I've got a set of these things on the way too.  Just noticed this thread.

Already had the cheap little solid piece HD "wings" mounted but these things just looked so much more functional when I saw them.  One hint from my own experience mounting the other type.  Before you put them go down to the plumbing section at Lowes or Home Depot (or wherever) and get some of those hard plastic/rubber faucet washers of a size to match the screws.  Use them as an insulator between the wing mount and the inner fairing.  Saves your paint.

I have to stop reading this site it is costing me money. You guys are finding all the trick parts. I ordered a set of wings and a set of screws today. Will have to get rubber washers. The guy I spoke with is JIM they have great customer service. Called my house after I placed order online and said parts were on the way. I gave him this web site. He said that his company will be at Surgis this year. I'll bet he might do a group buy.

You'll also find that the members on this site are also not "wrapped too tight" as evidenced by a million dollars worth of bikes sitting in the parking lot at Maggie Valley, rain coming down in buckets and everybody smiling, laughing and having a great time.  What a "shrinks dream" this place is!!!!

 [smiley=nervous.gif]

But BLM, we were all drinking Mike's beer.  Of course we were having a good time  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Three cheers for Mike from Texas !!

By the way, he should be up in the Sturgis area for a ride with some buddies right now.  There's a chance I'll get to see him Saturday in Topeka.  He was hoping to stop by the Kansas state rally there on his home from the Dakotas.

does anyone know the size of the bolt that goes into the inner fairing to hold on the wings as i have a set coming in and want to get the bolts to install them.  [smiley=confused5.gif] [smiley=confused5.gif] [smiley=nixweiss.gif] [smiley=drink.gif] [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Have to order the bolts seperately. They are cheap like bag for $1 dollar

My Freedom Wings arrived in the mail today.  Got to put them on real quick this evening before leaving for Topeka in the morning.  What's Kuryakyn got?

I just put a pair of freedom wings on my ride. About 200 miles later my right side wing came off. I didnt notice untill I got where I was going . To bad for me.  The wings are great and may have come off because someone messed with them or my own error. I recommend everyone loctite the screws to avoid the problem.(I had faucet washer in place)  Also please note I called Freedom wing and talked to JIM he was great and the co is sending me out my missing wing at a special price. Tehse are good people with a good product.

I found a set at a HD dealer in northern Ca. The shop foreman had a CVO and bought extra sets for anyone who might want a set,Its one of the best purchases I have added.Helps when it rains and when going through a lot of hot weather. He told me to install finger tight,I ended up putting the ole wrench to it and they never cam loose,I also tightened up the screws on the wing itself to make it more difficult to turn. Have had no problems at all.

The red bike's have been on about 800 miles now.  Work great with no wobble or problem with them not staying where you put them.  Wouldn't have worried about them coming loose if you hadn't had a problem.  Now I'll have to go check so it doens't bug me  [smiley=drink.gif]

Hey JC [smiley=beerchug.gif]

I have had those puppies on back order since April! End of May I was told should be in by June. Just called again today and dude at m&m had 3 other calls today, the one before me came from England ,thought of Tony. Anyway he is suppose to be emailing me when they are shipped to him. Will get some pics for ya when and if I ever get them.

He offered me my money back and I told him No worries mate (sorry just watched crocidile dundee) If it's not you I'm not worried about it. Then I ran across this thread and thought maybe I should get my money back and get these. But I think I will hold out for the Kuryakyns.

If I don't like them I will get the freedom wings and mount the Kuryakyns on my weed eater! Hey J.Rud
Let me know if you decide that you don't like them.  I'll probably take them off your hands for you.   I think I like the looks of them, but I didn't want to wait so I went with the Freedom Wings....

It's good to hear the positive stories on the Freedom Wings. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  I kinda figured the guys at the Electra Glide Garage would know what they're talking about. [smiley=beerchug.gif]

JC,
On Kuryakyn's site this is the only thing I could find.  From this photo it's difficult to tell how or where they open and adjust.  The description, however, says that they do  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=Harley&ci=3351

In general appearance these look better and more "finished" than the adjustable wings I got a couple weeks ago.  These others work fine.  But the Kuryakyn piece looks better.  Also looks like it attaches to the fairing with all three screws where there other pieces attach only with two.  Had  I known about these Kuryakyn goodies I'd likely not have ordered the ones I did.  Oh well, not the first time that's happened  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Hey JR, did you order the smoke or mirrored ones?  I think the mirror might look nice but will wait for some pics as well.  I love the other stuff I copied off your bike so these will be just one more item in common.  Be safe.  JP [smiley=drink.gif]

The pictures on the Kuryakin site leave a lot to be desired, but the instruction sheet gives a description of how they operate.

Now I understand where they get their name.  Thanks, grc.  I'm not sure they would look very appealing deployed.  If I'm reading it right, they would only be attached at the lower point.  It would be very "dragon wing" looking, but I'm not so sure that's a good thing. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Hey Pappy,

Actually, I went with the smoked to go with the smoked windshield. I liked the mirror ones but not sure how they would look on the bananna. Will take pictures if they ever come in!
