nav system on stock stereo
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:43:17 PM »

Is the nav system on the stock stereo worth getting? How much does it cost? I can't find it in the book. Is it hard to use as far as punching in your destinations and stuff?  Easy or hard to install?

You can get a lot more features on an aftermarket navigation system (and cheaper) then you can w/the navigation system in the Harmon Kardon radio... Not worth the $$$ IMO.

I used mine earlier this month on a 3500 mile trip and it worked perfectly.  It was very easy to use in all aspects.  I am very pleased with the operation of the HK unit.  That said, it came with my CVO and if I was looking to buy one, I would probably go with a Zumo instead. The HK unit works well enough, doesn't clutter up the handle bars, and integrates very well with the other audio components.  But I understand it is very pricey compared to the the Zumo, is not as up-to-date map-wise, and may not be as user friendly as the Zumo. Also, if you like looking at a moving map on the display, the HK doesn't give you that either.

I use my HK GPS all the time because I like the clean look and it came with the bike.  But what Fired00d said pretty much sums it up.
The HK GPS is great for main roads and gas stations and HD dealers but there is not much comparison to a Zumo.  If they had given me a choice when I bought the bike to which GPS I wanted it would have been a very easy decision to get the Zumo and let them keep the HK GPS.

I don't have the HK system but of the people I know who do....go with the Zumo.

There are a few problems with the new Zumo 660. I believe that Garmin is working on fixing them. Any time a new unit comes out there is a few bugs to work out. If you want to use the Zumo to make and receive phone calls via Bluetooth then go with the Zumo 550 as some of the new 660's exhibit poor audio on Bluetooth. I believe if you look in the back of the book you will see it (it's in the electronics section), I also believe the dealership "Flashes" it into your system. Kinda pricey if you ask me, if my bike didn't come with it I would not purchase it. JMO

For the money go with the handle bar option.

Plus: no need to worry about anyone stealing it

Minus:  won't work without the CD in

It requires a hardware unit which is mounted inside the fairing in the HK radio and a GPS antenna, also mounted inside the fairing ontop of the radio or on a small shelf installed just below the windshield screws.  There's no external evidence of one installed other then the biker driving in circles looking lost while staring at his/her radio.  ;D

Sorry, that was too easy.  The comments here a accurate as far as it goes.   The unit is clearly inferior and overpriced when compared to current Garmin offerings.  But it requires no external connections, completely integrates and is alway present on the bike as long as you keep the CDs in the tourpak.

The big minuses are:
Lack of map.  It's text directions only.
Lack of route planning.  You tell it where you want to go and it goes there.  No way points or alternate routes, although you can tell it to detour around the next X number of miles.
You must keep the CD in to use the Food/Fuel locator or if you miss a turn and need to recalculate the route.  If you follow it perfectly once the route is calculated you can pull it.
Personally, I use it becasue it came with it and my wife has a Zumo on her bike when we travel.  If I had to buy one, I wouldn't even consider the HK unit.

I use the Nav unit on my SEUC for pretty much the same reasons as listed. I do like the fact that it's totally integrated into the bike.  (meaning: I can listen to XM  or other radio bands and still have the nav interupt XM for directions, can't do that with an external GPS plugged into the Aux jack, unless you get the Zumo 550 and XM smart antenna).  The unit is very limited in it's capability and even a $150 aftermarket Garmin will give you much more capabilities than the HK unit does.  But I still use it, cuz it's there.   Now on my SESG, that's a different story.  I won't buy the HK unit for it.  I'm going to mount a Zumo (non-HD branded one) to the handle bar and run it through the Aux jack.  I'll probably load up a 4 Gb SDHC card with some tunes and listen to that when I'm using the Nav unit, so I'll still be able to listen to tunes and hear the nav voice.

Probably is ... but you would think for 31K it would be included ...
Even if you don't use it .

I tried looking it up ... Doesn't really say either way
I thought all CVO Touring models had the Adavanced Radio stock ... my fault for assuming I guess.

The advanced radio (more output) may be on it, but the GPS isn't. I know my SEEG came w/a built in amp to give it more output then the regular EG's.

The radio is GPS and NAV ready, but they chose not to give us poor SESG owners that feature. I would not have minded them throwing it in, but I sure would not spend for the HK GPS unit after the fact.
