Engraved Screamin' Eagle Legs
« on: February 20, 2007, 05:01:21 PM »

Not sure if this was good news or bad news.  Was just getting ready to walk out and take the bike out for the rest of the afternoon about an hour ago.  Walked in to the garage as a delivery driver was walking in from the outside.  He had a box with these fork legs.  So, of course, had to open them up and mess with things for awhile.

Ordered these almost two months ago with the original suggestion for delivery being "a couple weeks or so."  Vendors being what they are, of course, it didn't happen as suggested.  The parts did at least get here though.

They did skulls and dream catchers and all sorts of other things more regularly.  The flames with the Eagle was my idea for them to attempt though.  First impression here seeing anymore more than a sketch is that I'm going to like it ok.  The entire legs are clear cloated after the color work was done so, hopefully, they'll hold up well too.

And, no, don't know when they'll get installed now.  But it'll be before too terribly much longer.

I'm thinking this weekend. Especially if it's extremely cold or some type of precipitation is falling. You're not going to be able to look at those to many times w/o getting the job done. You're just not going to be able to take not having them on to go along w/the powder coat and diamond cut.

No way!!! :huepfenlol2:

Well........  it'll be longer than this weekend D00d.  Still need to get a set of springs and emulators or whatever else I'm going to fill them with before installing them.  Guess I hadn't fully planned ahead on this one  .

One more against the bike.

You're just a Slut, Don..a real bastard...

You cannot fill those beautiful legs with anything less than cartridges, it would be like putting cheap pantyhose on a beautiful woman's legs when they call for pure silk....so just cough up a few more bucks an get it over with.  If you act now, they'll be back and on the bike before it's time to do any serious riding.

They rook mahvelous....

Jim, this ( http://www.sanjoyengraving.com/home.html ) is the place that I worked with.  When I saw the set I saw and got the bug I quickly found two or three places online advertising similar work.  No great difference in prices and this vendor had done the one set I saw.  So I'd actaully seen their work.  That made a bit of difference in going with them.

I can't imagine why they would not work with an existing set of legs.  In my case there weren't any spares setting around to send though.  And they advertise a price structure that already has a new set of lowers built in to the deal.

In this case they picked up a set of lowers at their local Harley shop.  Those things MSRP are $300.00 but they no doubt get some kind of good discount as their advertising lists a LOT of engraved Harley parts.  In any case, a set of new legs with engraving (pretty much any thing you'd want) was in the $430.00 range.  A set of new legs with engraving and color work was about $600.00.  I much preferred the color contrast so went that way.

I just looked and good chromed legs look to be going on eBay for the $175-200 range.  So will likely end up with $400-425 in getting these made.  It's perhaps silly.  It serves no functional benefit.  It wasn't really needed.  But I just really quite liked the looks of it.  So.... what the hell  :2vrolijk_21: .

For others examples of their common "stock" offerings see their ebay listings here:  http://stores.ebay.com/Engraving-Store

Thankyew....  Thankyewveramuch  :bananarock:   (I know it's meant with affection.)

Iyiyiyiyiyiii.   Have been slowly realizing the same thing myself the last hour or so.  One of those "d'uh" moments.  Shouldn't right now.  But what hell.  It's only money and it's not like the government won't make more of it.

Frack!

Thanks again.  I'm real pleased with them also now that I finally got them in hand.  A couple of minor issues.  Whomever was their painter left a fingerprint under the clear at the very bottom of one of the legs.  Given the various lines and where it's it at though I can actually fix that for far less hassle than sending things back and forth.  The vendor also didn't notice that the axle clamp at the bottom of the left leg has peeling chrome.  Fortunately that's not an issue either.

Their art work is very nice.  They were very good about adjusting to my directions as we went through the process to make it just exactly what I was telling them I wanted.  Couldn't have asked for a better experience in that part of the job.  They did need a bit more attention to detail on those things there at the end.  But, fortunately in this case, they're not deal breakers.  After I sent them photos of what was delivered I'm guessing they'll be more careful next time too.  Especially if someone watches them closely.

They were, in the end, a relatively typical vendor experience to deal with.  Slower then suggested.  Not quite 100% when it came to managing all the little details for quality.  But nothing that isn't fixable with the important part of the job being really spot on for what it is supposed to be.
