From Doc's thread it looks like most (all?) of us who are having problems with peelin' chrome have black/blue bikes. With this poll I was hoping we could get an idea of whether the problem was isolated to early production units and has hopefully been corrected by now, or if the orange/black owners still have this to look forward to.

Hey folks haven't been on here latly just thought i'd say I was polishing my o/b yoday and my wheels are pealing big chunks.I got mine in March of 04 and thought I'd thought I was lucky with the chrome problems.Is this problem just on wheels or should I keep an eye on any other parts??

My pumkin SEEG that was delivered in April of 04 has only a small amont of chrome peeling on the front wheel(so far) [smiley=nervous.gif]
I know another guy with a black/blue SEEG that he got in the fall of 03, he has had both wheels, floor boards and I think a break pedal lever replaced for peeling chrome.

I noted this on another post a week or so ago. The Dealer Replaced both Front and Back Wheels last week. No Questions asked, Wheels were ordered and in and replace within a week.

My Orange/Black was manufactured in April. Have replaced the front wheel, front footboard supports and the derby cover with the red lettering falling off. I think the chrome peeling problem has been spread pretty evenly around, as I have a buddy that just noticed the floorboards peeling and the primary flaking on his '05 red. Shouldn't be so picky on a 30k scoot, right? [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]

Took delivery end of October 2003. Have replaced both wheels, one mirror, all four floorboards. No problem from the dealer and it wasn't even the selling dealer that did the work. Great machine otherwise. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I have an '05 delivered in Oct. of '04. It has had both the passenger and driver floor boards replaced as well as the billet end caps for the mufflers.

Just got back from the dealer. All four floorboards and the top transmission cover are on order to replace the chipping/peeling/bubbling originals. That's the bad news. The good news is, there was no question whatsoever on the dealer's part that this would be taken care of. I was in and out of there in about 10 mins.

Funny thing was the parts manager said, "There's a website for these things and just about every guy on there has had to replace wheels and floorboards." I just said, "Yeah, I've heard about that site." [smiley=laugh.gif]

I got an '05 SEEG that I picked up in early March... No peeling chrome yet, but I am having trouble with the rear tire.... seems to be wearing out awfully fast [smiley=nixweiss.gif]and the wife says the tire stinks when I leave the driveway... [smiley=oops.gif]
Maybe when I replace the tire next month the new tire will stick to the concrete better and not smoke so much... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Nope, it's not just you HD... Ya shoulda seen the look on the ol lady's face when, as all good boys do, I decided to burn the rest of the tire off before I went down to the dealer to have the rear re placed and got a lottle carried away and ended up replacing the rim and having the rear fender re-painted when the silly thing caught on fire... She was SOOO proud of me!

Did Crystal River HD do the switch? Did you have to show damage first? Might be worth a ride over if they'll switch em without a fight but doubt they will. Already replaced my front with another Detonator but don't have too much confidence in that for the long term...after 2 years, they will not cover chrome regardless, according to my dealer, so get 'em while the gettin's good.

Had to call customer service when my 4th set of detanators started to peel. I thought that 51 chrome parts had been replaced, but the nice lady at customer service informed me that it was 53 and not 51. Now it is 53 because the detanators were replaced with thunderstars, after much conversation with the dealership. Black and Blue will be 2 years old in March. Just put her up on the lift to get her ready for Daytona and looks like new floorboards, mirrors, and primary are in need of replacing.
Oh well what would life without going to the dealership every other time you ride be?

I was told the extended warranty would not cover peeling crome. My bike was just out of warranty and believe it or not good faith on HD, replaced my 4th set of wheels. It only took 3 weeks to get an answer. Good luck.

I just got my extended plan last month and was told by the service manager, the owner, and the top salesman at my dealer that it wouldnt be a problem if the wheels or other chrome had a peeling issue, they will stand behind me and replace them.
Might be that I've bought several new bikes from them, and do plan to get another, so that might also be a factor. [smiley=nixweiss.gif] whatever, as long as my needs are taking care of I'm down with it.

Bike get washed ever friday (If where in town I wash she dries) and she pretty picky about cleaning it. This is only the second time shes found anything. First time was the right floor board insert.

Hopefully I will have the same luck/situation as you do with my dealer. I didn't buy bike from local dealer (they couldn't guarantee me a [smiley=pumpkin.gif] when I wanted to buy, only could put me on waiting list), but did get extended warranty from them. They local dealer has been really good to me (probably because I spend a lot of my hard earned money with them, and have bought previous bike with them), and have taken care of me in the past so I think they would more then accommodate me on any problem I have. Extended warranties can cover things that you think that they wouldn't it all depends on how your dealer writes it up.

HMMMM Came in from a ride yesterday and gave the banana a good going over. Back wheel chrome is peeling all around the rim. Guess I'll be visiting the dealer as soon as weather clears.

I just got word of approval to replace my 3rd set of wheels and floorboard inserts. This time HD made the dealer take pictures (a 100 mile trip for me to the dealer) and send them in. Guess they won't take our word for it. It took 2 months to get approval

The problem could be that the replacement parts are coming from the same batch that the originals are from.

I would suspect that the MoCo does a run for the CVO bikes and with it an estimated stock for warranty. It won't do anyone any good if this is the case as they won't have addressed anything. The reason they continue to replace with a known bad part is simply to reduce stock and get the write off rather than simply disposing of inventory and taking a smaller write off.

That sucks, and then the other doesnt. Glad to hear your getting yours replaced. I hope this set last for you. Try dressing them with chrome sealer, to try to keep them sealed as much as possible from brake dust and road film. Hopefully they will last longer this time for you.

I'm in the no peel catagory on the 05 SEEG. I remember the bike took 6.5 months to be delivered. The reason they gave about this time last year was that the bike had to be return to the chrome shop for rework. Apparently they had a lot of trouble with earlier work. Seems like from the threads here, that they may have been telling the truth for once.

Anybody know what actually happens (and what's suppoosed to happen) to the wheels that get taken off and replaced?

On my wheels the actual flaking/blistering was small - so small that I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't been made aware by you excellent chaps - Thanks - but enough for the dealer to agree instantly to replace them.

The fact that I brought the wheels loose to them helps I guess since the dealer doesn't have to pay for the mechanic's time to remove and replace them - but you can bet they will claim that from the MoCo...

I reckon someone might well buy these old wheels on eBay as "used items - no warranty - no return" etc etc or am I just being a cynic?

If I had the opportunity I'd buy them myself and fit them again and keep the new ones for when the warranty expires

(Thinks - or I could swap them again and again - no!! don't think like that!!! that is BAD)

Dave...The warranty policy on the peeling chrome is a direct replacement return to HD. The dealer does not recieve credit for the wheels until the factory inspects them (now with a policy that the dealer must circle in felt tip the area used to base the claim) and agrees that the problem is significant enough to be valid. The wheels are then outsourced to the original plater and put back into the system to be used to settle the next round of warranty claims. When they peel again, the wheels take off on their next trip through the system. Only real way to stop the madness is to accept the credit on the peeling warranty wheels and select a style that has been known to last ie the Mirror Chrome Thunderstars that have had few, if any warranty claims.

As a matter of interest, presumably the difference between the mirror and rough finish Thunderstars is just that - one is smooth and one is textured (rough) - i.e. everything else is the same including who makes them and who plates them?

Where, I wonder, have others found the chrome to be bad on their wheels?

My blisters are not on the rough finish section of either wheel but are on the junction of the rim and the well, so I'm interested in why the mirrors have no history of failure while the rough finish wheels do??? (If everything elas is the same)

Or is this more to do with (as I think was mentioned previously) there being a large batch of textured wheels needed for the SEEGs production run plus spares which overstretched the capacity of the plater and some were not prepped right?

Presumaby as these go back through the process the problem areas are polished right prior to plating and all is well going forward.

Time will tell but at least I have another avenue to pursue should that be necessary [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Now, the question is, do I want these replacement textured wheels to fail straight away? - or not at all [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Dave.....First, on the 20+ sets of wheels that I have personally seen with a peeling problem I can tell you that the area effected on your wheels is consistant with most of the problems. A few began their peeling on the leading edge of each spoke. As far as the wheels being recycled, polished correctly and returned where they would last, I wouldn't count on it as several of the replacements that show the earlier part number (indicating that they've been through the process) peeled a second time. From the information that I've received (not independantly verified) is that the problem exists in the EPA and OSHA requirements on US platers as opposed to those that are outsourced to one of several countries. IF, the information is correct the wheels in question are plated in the US and wheels such as the Thunderstar series are not. Again, I do not know personally if this information is correct, but I can verify the end result of the two different series of wheels.

So the later number means a better chance of a good wheel? - or is it not that simple?

Dave...Don't think anyone knows for sure where the "new" wheels start, but several people have told me that the change over started with the 45 hundred series...(45.......) Again, there's a lot of guessing going on that issue, but it does seem to follow logic. Best advice is to look the new wheels over carefully for "light" spots in the chrome or rough edges on the leading edge of the spokes. If they aren't right...swap them out for the Thunderstars and start over. Just my opinion, but has worked to date.

JC....check both front floorboard supports on each side. I'm betting they flaked off on the front edges. You may also want to check the floorboards themselves, as they first start to peel from underneath on the inside edge. The passenger floorboards peel on the flat surface area, usually along the rear seam. Check the underside of the mirrors as they will, at some point peel from there outward. Unless the dealer will warranty the new wheels, you may want to go the Thunderstar route. Sometimes enough is just enough. Sorry buddy, I thought maybe you had dodged the bullet on the peeling chrome.

Oh Boy, This doesn't sound to reassuring! I'm not sure I even want to clean my wheels anymore for fear that I might be polishing the chrome off. Damn, this blows!
So it sounds as though this time if they start to peel, I'm just going to hold them to whatever they're going to send me, whenever that maybe, and if either wheel may still be available on the planet. But heaven forbid they just satisfy the customer and give up the credit towards wheels that ARE available, so we can get on with riding and having fun!
IMHO A persons dream bike should be everything that was promised by the company that took a persons hard earned money, and if a problem like this came up just like ALL the automakers have to do (recall) whatever is a DEFECT and replace or repair said DEFECT! to the satisfaction of that person would handed that hard earned money to them...

The bike's been in the dealership since last September. Just picked it up Friday. Went for a ride to start 113" build break in. Got back, went to polish rims and discovered peeling chrome. Well I went to my dealer this morning, and took my new truck for a test ride for about 80 miles. I think things will work out but only time will tell that tale. For the moment everything is way up in the air with the change-over going on, lots of confusion, I did make sure that my store credits are still intact. Plenty of new faces and thank god a few old friends still there! The test ride went great, with all the work gone into the built-ins for my work space, nothing moved out of place and no noises.

I just noticed my floor boards. Driver & passenger has little specs bubbling up along the rubber inserts. I assume it's just gonna get worse. My warranty runs out on June 15th. So I plan on getting that fixed along with the fuel gauge fogging issues & clutch (derby) cover peeling orange paint for the third time.

I picked mine up in Dec of 03. Some guy backed out of it cause he could get a better deal on his trade in Florida. So I stepped in to help the MOCO out

I replaced the passenger left side floor board only. The floor board was bad from day one but figured I run with it for a year or so and then get a new one before the warrenty is up. I bought an extended warrenty (5 years) so I sure hope if the chrome falls off this Pig that HD takes care of my Black & Blue ride.

Three new ones actually, dentist was brutal!

Back on topic... I replaced the Detonators with Thunderstars after a little over one year, I just wasn't willing to play that game and I love the full chrome 5 spoke.

At that same time I replaced all the floorboards, wtfo...

So, I ride, a lot, and if Maybell is dirty, we go riding some more - I try to remember that it is going to get some chips and scratches if you are going to play on these great American Highways and Byways. (Probation on anyone who touches that!)

Now Candy is obsessed with Glare and doing up both bikes and with having to get up close and personal, she has noticed the floorboards are going again. Lots of bubbles. But, as Rodney Dangerfield said, "What is a hot tub without bubbles? Jump on in Bubbles!"
