Tour Pack painted like gas tank
« on: July 22, 2009, 08:59:46 PM »

I just figured out the HD tour pack paint scheme for 09 SERG is just one color.  Yesterday I saw a picture of someones tour pack that was painted with three lines like the paint scheme on the gas tank, now I can't find it.  I am looking for ideas on painting the tour pack, I just can't stomach paying $1200 for a single color paint job.

no, but thanks for the replies,  I originally thought the Factory bags all looked like Larry's, until I saw others and called the factory and some others.  I read the response about the orange bag on e-bay, but never did find it, and did not get a reply to a PM.  If that Orange Chopped bag looks like the tank, a picture would be nice.  But somewhere on here I saw a silver bag with 3 lines like the tank, I wanted to show this to the paint guy for ideas.

Just my personal preference, but if I were going to have a tour pack (chopped or full), I would rather have the paint scheme similar to LarryB, i.e., matching the saddlebags rather than the tank.  I do like the looks of yours, LarryB.

Larry,
Not sure how to photo them but I put a 100 LED (12") strip with clear tube centered just about 1/8" below the lid on the tourpak and a 70 LED (9.75") strip, also in clear tube, that is internally split with 35 for left turn and 35 for right turn, also funcitions as a run light on the back of the chrome detachable t/p bracket. Wiring goes in thru the frt of the tourpak where normally antenna wire would enter. Bought a extra set of connectors for the rear wiring harness and made a "tee" so you can plug into the rear wiring when tourpak is on, and lift seat and unplug when t/p is off. No actual intrusion to the wiring harness.
Also hooked a Radiantz Strobe module into rear lights, Threee amazing strobes of all the rear lights when brakes at applied, then solid for a few seconds then it strobes and starts over again.
Had a guy last nite at Bikenite tell me it looked like liquid fire from 50 foot away when brakes were on.

Another idea that could be cool is to have the Screamin' Eagle head that's on the fairing put on both sides of the tour pack.  Wonder how to get that decal?

That tour pack belongs to Doug Green, a member here. He just sold it on e-bay, but hasn't heard from the buyer yet. Our buddy J.P. painted it, and made the S/E decal. It had the chrome insert and the painted spoiler. You may want to follow up with Doug in case the buyer fails to. Doug is lespaul????.

If you are looking for any type of LED lighting, you might want to check out a guy from our local HOG chapter who will have his vendor's booth set up in Sturgis.  His name is Dave and his company will have a big yellow booth on Lazelle street right in front of the Dakota Mart.

Hawg Sounds,

Where did you get the silver applique?  I like your's and LarryB's Tour-Pak and was thinking of doing one in the SERG's most awesome color, yellow.  I figure it cannot be that much more expensive then the $1200 love fest the MoCo wants for the color matched SERG's.

Any know how much a primed/unpainted King Tour-Pak runs?

Has anyone found, painted, copied, or whatever the eagle graphic from the front fairing of the SERG and applied it to the tour pak?  On the chopped pak, it would look pretty cool.

I just picked up a slightly used King Tour-Pak on eBay for $220. Sure, it needs latches, some minor repair and paint. You'll need to consider the additional parts needed to attach the TP: detachable mount, 4 point docking kit, latches, premium hinges, liner, rack, wiring harness, backrest, etc. I found the cheapest way to go is through Chicago Harley (or other Harley 20% off online discounter). I spent about $850 for parts to mount the TP. Of course, this includes a rack and other upgrades that aren't required mount a TP. Even with a new TP from the MOCO, I still would have had to spend the $ for additional parts, mount, rack, etc. With the cost of the TP, parts and paint, I'll end up around $1000 less than buying new from the MOCO.

I looked at the HD site and did not see any Tour-Pak's that were primed/unpainted.  I guess I would need to order some matching Pearl Yellow too.

Not sure how accurate this is, but I was told by the HD Parts guy that the only way to order a primer tour pak is to order part by part, which would be more costly than ordering a painted pak.  I ordered a vivid black and then had to have it painted silver with my graphics added.  Expensive, but if one wants more than a solid color pak, it's the way to go.  Of course, ebay, etc also provides some nice options if you can find one.

You are correct! Order the cheapest painted one you can find if you're looking to have it painted anyway. Forget the Primer route! ;)

I like both Hawg Sounds and LarryB's paint schemes.  They're different and stand out in a crowd of stock '09 SERG's.

My personal preference would be like the picture ADC posted.

Again, this is only my opinion, over the stock solid color to match, these are great...  But in my eyes this type pattern just looks a little redundant.  The flow of the bike paint scheme is through the middle and tapering downward with one color on top and the other on the bottom.

The stripes on the Tour-Pak to me add to the tank flow by continuing the design.  They let my eye flow rather than stacked designs.  Just enough accent to add some style, subtle but not taking away from the original design.

After looking at all three pictures close together, I think I see what my eyes are seeing, Hawg Sounds and LarryB's are setup in the solo position and the Tour-Pak is close to and directly over the painted saddlebags.  I guess I prefer the longer look of the two up layout with the Tour-Pak further reward.

Our bikes are a VERY personal item and how we "dress" them up is our choice.  This is like the new SESG with the black and chrome wheels.  Guys want to change them out to all chrome and I like the black & chrome better, just the way they came from the MOCO.  Each to their own I say.

Hawg Sounds and LarryB have unique rides that no one else will have and I DO mean that in a good way.

 :)  :)  :)

all you need is the bracket for how you're going to install, One up or Two up. two up needs a change of the brakets on the fender rails. then get the two up bracket for the TP. Drill holes as needed in tp. it has ability of adjusting up to 1 in as needed, little notches ( we dont need no stinking notches) on the tp bottom, very easy do. I d go lay down in the garage and take a pic, but, naaaa, 3 bourbans, thats 3 triples. wouldnt get up

Rooster. Tell Mrs. R it's call electric orange by HD or Mary Kay  :).  It's make the bike run supersonic fast.

Not sure if I had all the pieces, but I used the 4-point 2-up docking kit and I bought the 2-up detachable rack.  It fit just inside the raised boss on the bottom of the chopped Tour-Pak.  I transfered the hole pattern from the rack to the underside of the Tour-Pak and predrilled with 1/8" drill bit to use as a guide.  I then used a Uni-bit to do the drilling.  They tend to be less aggressive on the plastic or fiberglass and work well with the inner steel liner inside the Tour-Pak.

With this type of mounting, it moves the Tour-Pak back and it give my wife and I plenty of room.

Good luck with your Tour-Pak project.

I thought the eagle horn cover would make the horn sound like an eagle screaming???

Just went through this post for the first time and it's always great to find another source of Grey Ghost photos!

Love what all of the owners have done to their bikes. The talon kickstand is the bomb! I have a flames kickstand I still have to get altered to fit my Switchblade (winter project). Always love to see personalization on these machines whether it is mechanical or cosmetic (or both)!

Mod on!
