Why make engine modifications to bike under warranty?
« on: January 06, 2011, 08:59:21 AM »

No obvious answers like  :pepper:"becasue I can, or I want to" :pepper:  I'm not talking about exhaust & tuners, I'm talking about cams and headwork.  I have the itch to put cams in my 2010, but i just bought it at the end of august and it only has 3,500 miles on it before it went to sleep for the winter.  after reading about all the issues with 110's, do you mess with the engine itself, maybe wait another season and put more miles on it to make sure you don't have a lemon, or wait until the warranty period has expired?  it appears a lot of people on this site are making major changes immediately?

The answer really is "because you want to."

I did, on my 09 road glide, premptive strike, if you wait for warr. to be over oil pump trash, extra money to make the thing right. if you have extended warr, you spend 1800.00 dollars for that and still need to spend the money to do the crank right, at that time why not make it a little faster, and spend more on all the extras I put 11k on mine and tore it apart this oct and did it right, put the stop sign up before the accident

I know, but it's true.

Seriously, if a bike comes out of the box and is satisfactory to you in every way you then do nothing with it.  If instead you "want" more blind you add blind.  If you "want" some functionality that doesn't exist on the bike you add that.  If you "want" more performance you add that.

These machines all move under their own power when they're uncrated.  They'll do so at highway speed.  We don't need to do much to them to ride them.  We do all the crap we do because we want to.

Modifications have never been an issue on any warranty work (factory or extended) and I've had enough warranty work done to pay for it several times over (although I never paid anywhere close to the $1,800 mentioned above), on each of my last four bikes.

The 04 SEEG had gear drive cams, tuner, etc.  My current ride, the 10 SESG, has the Fueling Cams, adj. pushrods and TTS Tuner and dyno tuned and just had the compensator replaced under warranty.

My wife's 09 Street Glide has cams, tuner, adj. pushrods, etc. and they just replaced her entire motor.

I got the 7 year on the last three bikes and the tire and wheel coverage, but it was more like $1,100.....it is negotiable. :2vrolijk_21:

You are right....used to hearing that kind of logic from my wife though?  Had some mods on my old bike (now pictured) but i waited til about 10,000 miles with no issues first.  had a lot of money in that bike over time...this bike out of the box.  i think that is my hesitation.  loved the performance and sound of the CAMS, biggest difference maker to the bike?  winter duldroms gets you thinking spring and riding???

My 2002 Deuce is no where even close to stock, but has no warrenty so doesn't matter. I do get tired of constantly tikering with it when I would rather be riding however. So, when I got my 2009 Street Glide I asked "Is there any performance packages could be installed and still be covered under warrenty anywhere?"..

The answer was yes. They installed the 103 stage II kit on the 96 and still covered it under the 7 year warrenty. Now I just ride and enjoy it knowing a dealer will be responsible for any problems it incurs anywhere I ride. :mango:.

I did it because I am a speed freek.  I love HP and the sound of huge cams and high compression.  When I roll up, everyone knows my bike is "not right"!!

Also, my engine builder has been building engines for a long time and has never had a warranty problem with his builds.  There is no question that my engine is stronger and more reliable then when it came out of the factory.  That makes a difference to me riding long distance two up and loaded down.

If you do build it, make sure you have confidence in the builder.
