Second Trip to Kansas
« on: July 02, 2007, 12:01:02 AM »

Evening All,  Next Saturday, 7 July, I'll begin my second trip to Kansas.  I have to make a quick business stop near Clarksville, TN on the way.  I was thinking of stopping at Knockum Hill BBQ in Herndon, KY for lunch if anyone in the area would care to join me there.  Then I'll make my way back to I-24 to US 62 to US 60 to Springfield, MO, where I'll spend the night.  Next morning I'll head up MO13 to US 54 to KS177 into Manhattan, KS.  I know this isn't the most direct route, but I want to ride it, so that is what I'm gonna do.  If anyone cares to meet me somewhere and ride along, please let me know where, and we'll make it happen.  I'm looking forward to some Throwed Rolls Saturday night at Lamberts Cafe in Ozark, MO.  I'll be in Kansas until 14 July.  That day I'll go to Springfield, MO and spend the night.  The next day I'll make my way home by whatever route I come up with between now and then.

Hope to see some of you on the road.

Guess you ought to be glad it's now and not 40 years ago.  Even larger war and the commissioning would have cost you a saber too.

I thought everyone understood the difference between the military radio terminology "Roger" and "WILCO."  The twain should never be confused or used in succession.  It would be redundant............I guess I need to get out of my military mind when posting.  :huepfenjump3:

Henry, that bridge in Kansas that got totalled by a piece of heavy equipment wasn't your only concern after all.  Take a look at this:  http://www.modot.org/springfield/road_construction/I-44closing.htm

That will be right in your line of travel after leaving the hotel north of Lamberts.  Would not be surprised if the backup is as far back as your hotel.  Before leaving Lamberts remind someone to give you alternative directions through Springfield to catch HWY 13 in town and go north.  Just in case it gets forgotten while everyone is catching throwed rolls you can take any of the east-west arteries in town west to the Kansas Expressway.  Kansas is HWY 13 in town.  Go north on Kansas and you're on 13 heading out of town.

Got it.  Thanks Don.  So I guess I can simply hang a left on Chestnut Expressway and run into Kansas Expressway, make a right, and be on MO13?

That's it exactly.  Stay on Chestnut and it'll run through town to Kansas.  Hang a right and just keep on going.

I am choosing optimism for riding on Saturday.  No more high water.  A long detour to get to Kansas City (chit, part of 69 highway is closed right now too, you better check your routes west off of 13) compared to what it would be normally from here.  But another dyno app't is set for Friday morning.  Be home Friday night.  Use Saturday to test the tune.  At least that's the plan.

Driving back and forth to Springfield, IL on Thursday to pick up the Bushtec trailer.  Then the now long drive to Kansas City and back on Friday.  Hauling the trailer behind the truck all of both days.  I may just be tired of driving by Saturday.  Have to ride the bike because I don't think staying in the pickup any longer would be an option.

I'll do that.  I plan on heading west on US54 all the way to KS177 then north to Manhattan.

Part of 52 are definitely closed.  I found that out trying to sidetrack this morning.  Parts of 69 in Kansas are reportedly going to be down for a week or more as some road bed is supposed to have raised.

Just looked and no reported closings on 54.  If it's open all the way across you should be good to go.  Even more good news for me for Friday is that my best road to Kansas City just posted as reopening one lane each way sometime tomorrow.  That'll make the Friday round trip much easier  :2vrolijk_21: .

Bike is packed and ready to go.  My friend and co-worker, Buzz (I posted pictures of his highly modified GTO on 4 July) is following me in his GTO.  Why do I get the feeling we're gonna be going fast?  I can't keep up with the Goat.  I guess it is a good thing he's following.  I hope he switched out those Mickey Thompson drag radials on the rear wheels for something more conducive to traveling.  He'll be on rims by the time we get to Clarksville if not.  Was going over the scooter this evening and noticed a small collection of road dust on a slight slick spot underneath the aft end of the oil tank vent tube and right behind the VSS.  I don't know if the slick spot was caused by the tube, the VSS or if the gasket on my oil filler spout is leaking.  The later is the most unlikely, since gravity plays in.  The VSS is a possibility.  I've seen that O ring fail before on my softail.  I think it might be the vent tube since I replaced it right before my last Kansas trip............but I'm just not sure.  I've cleaned it up, and I'll be eyeballing it hard at each fuel stop tomorrow.  Yeah.......I know, it is really insignificant, but I'm picky like that.  Leaks of any sort will drive me insane if I can't diagnose and fix them.
Anyway, Renea picked up 2 cases of Yuengling for us, since we can't get it west of the Mississippi River.  They're going in Buzz's Goat.  We're leaving at 0700 and will stop near Clarksville, TN for about an hour.  Then we'll cruise up to Paducah, KY and hopefully meet Barry (Dis Air) for lunch.  Then we'll get on US 60 and head to Springfield and RON.  Lambert's Cafe and Throwed Rolls for supper...........as well as some of those Yuenglings later on.  Next day MO13 to US 54 to KS 177 into Manhattan, KS.  BUSY week up there.  If we're passing near you, ride with us.

I am SO tired, but it is a good tired.  Had a great ride up here.  Arrived in Manhattan about 2pmCST today.  Had some schoolwork to do, so I knocked it out, then washed the scooter.  Funny how we forget things.  Normally I don't have to learn things twice, but when it comes to that Power Commander, apparently I do.  Water got in the female PC connector, and of course, made the engine miss.........So, had to pull everything apart, dry it out, put it back together, and the bike runs great now.  My tuner had put the PC to motorcycle harness union under the battery box, with the female PC connector open end facing up.  On my 02 Ultra, I learned it is better to place that union in front of the ECM and on top of the bike ECM interface connector with the female PC connector open end facing down.  That way water can't get in it.  Anyway, need to get some bundle ties and get that squared away tomorrow..............and I'm straying from the topic......sorta.  Hey, it did happen on this trip, and it was the only anomoly, so I'm pleased.
I left my house with my cage driving friend and co-worker, Buzz (AKA: Ken- he and his wife, Gayle had supper at our house on the 4th of July.  I posted about that elsewhere), yesterday morning shortly after 7am.  Buzz drove his highly modified GTO.  He did switch from drag radials to Goodrich T/As, so he wouldn't end up riding on rims.  We met Barry (Dis Air) for lunch at Backwoods BBQ in Paducah, KY.  Barry is really wanting his melon back, and I don't think it made things better for him to see mine.  He really misses his scooter, and I can't say I blame him.  He's riding his brother's Ultra, which is a very nice machine itself.  Here is a picture of us after lunch.  Thanks for lunch, Barry.  It was great to meet you, and I look forward to riding with you when you get your melon back.

The bridge crossing the Ohio River via US 60 is being painted, so they had the east bound lane shut down.  Had to wait for about 10 minutes to cross the bridge.  Here are a few shots.  First is Buzz chillin' in the A/C, while I sweltered.  ;D

Here's a shot of the bridge and traffic.  The wait wasn't that bad.  If you're headed that way, just be aware.  They're about half way finished.  Shutdown while you wait, because it is BLAZIN' out there.

Here's a picture of me and the melon just after we crossed the Mississippi River via US 60.  We went all the way to Springfield, MO yesterday.  550 mile day.  Had supper with Shawn (Scooterhar), his wife Val, Cary (Hobo), his G/F Steph, and her children at Lambert's Cafe.  We were all pretty much stuffed afterward.  Went to Shawn and Val's house, tossed back some Yuenglings, enjoyed some fireworks and called it a night.

This morning Cary and Steph rode up MO 13 with us.  When we got to US 54, we pulled over into a grocery store parking lot to say our "see ya laters," they headed east, and we headed west.  Here's a couple shots.

So, we traveled US 54 though Eldorado Springs and Nevada, MO, crossed the stateline into Kansas, went through Fort Scott, Eureka, and a few other towns I can't recall right now.  Made a right onto KS 177.........got to go through Cassoday, KS "The Prairie Chicken Capital of the World," Council Springs, and into Manhattan.  Buzz is staying in Junction City.  There are several of us up here right now.  I'll try to remember to get some pictures.  Anyway, it is HOT here, but it was good to ride like that.  Roughly 900 miles in 2 days.  FUN!

Glad the trip went OK Henry. We had a good ride, met our friends in Stover and the circled Lake of the Ozarks, had lunch and hit a couple of shops, then back to Stover to their farm and had a few frosty cold malted beverages, then got  back to Springfield around 9:00pm, total af 380 miles. I had a first yesterday, a bird flew straight into the left side of the front fender then exploded into the air diffuser.  :o  Man what a mess! We had to pull over to clean the bird remains off of both of our faces and glasses, I had chit all over the front of my shirt, I had feathers coated with bodily fluids (the birds, not mine) stuck to the INSIDE of the windshield, one wing stuck between the frame and the gas tank. So I've got a little clean up to do tonight. Anyway, thanks for stopping in to visit the hillbillys. Hopefully we'll see ya next week. Here is a shot of Henry, Ken ans Stephanie before we split off.

OMG!!!!!  I could figure out if I should  :vrolijk27: or  :ROFLOL:!  So I did both.  Then I got to thinkin' if it were me with bird chit, guts and bodily fluids all over me, I'd more than likely  :puke:!  WOW!  What a freaky occurence.  I'm sure you remember I had a bird strike on my right saddlebag guard on my way home last time I was up here.  I never even knew it until I got off the bike in Springfield and saw the remains all over the saddlebag.
Very productive day, although a little chaotic.  Still plenty of work to fill the remaining four days.  Sorry.  No pictures.
I'll be spending next Saturday evening in Springfield, so we'll get together then.  Until then, wash your scooter!   ;D

Well, this is it.  We've finished our mission here in Kansas.  I'm leaving at daybreak.  Gonna wait for it to cool off a bit, and then I'll pack the scooter.  I'm traveling to Springfield, MO tomorrow, and I'll head home on Sunday.  Bike will need new fluids and a serious bath when I get home.  I'll be home for about a week, and then I'll be gone again for a few weeks.  Really looking forward to the ride home.

Yeah, I know.........but that ABCs of Touring crap got old four years ago.  This is, however, a Federal sign, so I'm sure they'd take it for Kansas, an "R" county, and either a "J" and or "M" and or "O" city for Junction City, Manhattan, or Ogden respectively................Oh............and of course an "F" and/or an "R" city for Fort Riley.   That's stretching it a bit.  ::) ::)

Can't wait to get out of here in the morning.  Nice place, but it aint home.

I hear ya, the wife doesn't even ask what to do with them any more. A buddy of mine spends more time figuring out how many points he'll get on a particular ride, then he does putting those miles on the bike. Needless to say, we don't ride together very often, well except to the local watering hole.

Henry came back through Springfield Saturday afternoon, he hung out with Scooterhair and had  :drink: :drink: till I got done at work. We had a good time talking scooters till the steaks were done---  then it got kinda quiet, just for a little while. Thanks for coming by Henry. You know the door is always open. Be careful on your next road trip.

Cary,
Those are some awesome pictures, Brother.  Scooter looks like he wants whatever it was I was chasing up my schoz.  Had a really great time visiting with you guys.  I coulda made a meal........and damn near did......outta that salad Steph made.  I think I had three bowls and another helping with my steak.  Awesome grub.  THANK YOU so much for your hospitality.  As previously mentioned, you, Scooter and the Girls have and open invitation at my home whenever you decide to show up.
I left Springfield yesterday morning just before 6am.  Traveled US 60 to US 63 to US 160.  Folks, if you haven't ridden US 160, you gotta do it.  That is one fun stretch of highway.  I was whooped by the time I got to Poplar Bluff.  Lots of curves, hills, and some decent straightaways.  You'll shift....ALOT.  Anyway, once I got to Poplar Bluff, I headed south on MO 53 through Qulan to the J Highway and made a left on the JJ Highway to Glennonville to visit my Mom's grave.  It was good to be there.  I really miss my Mom.  She passed 5 years ago at 61.  It was unexpected.  I wasn't done with Mom yet......I believe none of us ever are.  Loosing a parent is tough.  I sat in the grass by her grave for the better part of 30 minutes just thinking of her.  My Dad is traveling to Glennonville tomorrow to visit her grave.  He is in the advanced stages of Parkinson's Disease, so he is having a church friend drive him up there.  There was a flower stand next to Mom's headstone, so I bent it in such a fashion to hold one of my cards.  It will make him feel better to know I was there recently.  When I was finished, I got back on MO 53 through Campbell and made a left on MO 25 and rode to US 412.  I stayed on US 412 all the way to Lexington, TN where I picked up TN 22.  TN 22 lead me to TN 69 which becomes AL 20.  AL 20 took me to US 72 in Florence, and I rode US 72 into Huntsville.  From there I took some backroads to get home.  Once home (around 4:30pm), I hugged and kissed my lovely bride....it sure is good to see her.....unpacked the bike, and drained the oil in all three cavities of the bike.  Fresh oil went in, and I called it a night.  This morning, I washed the scooter, and parked it in the garage.  Renea and I spent the afternoon together just enjoying our back porch.  Got a call from my boss about 2pm.  She wanted to let me know that I need to be prepared to leave again this weekend....this time to Ft. Eustis.  It isn't definite yet.  I'll know for sure when I go back to work on Wednesday.  This evening I detailed the bike and finished the service.  Ol' Thumper is ready to go to Virginia if I get the call.  That scooter is running so well.  My air cleaner cover is vibrating, and it is bugging the hell out of me.  It doesn't fit well over the HD-0800 air filter, so I'm in the market for a new cover.  Don't know what I'm gonna do about it yet.  Gotta study for my final tomorrow.  It is good to be home.....even if only for a few days.  Stef gets her exfix removed on 26 July.  If I'm out of town, I'm going to do my level best to break away from the job in Virginia..........and as much as I hate commercial aviation, I'm gonna fly to Birmingham to be there.....even if it is just for that day.  Personally, I hope the work schedule slips, so I don't have to leave until after her surgery.  She's already getting the jitters.
OK, I got longwinded.  I'll hush now.  Have a great evening folks.  See you on the highway.
