It's like the Space Shuttle, redundant systems in case one fails.

Yeah, trust me, you do NOT want that cable to break. It will bust up the whole side of the pack and it may never align up properly again. I would consider getting longer screws and doubling up the cables. That Ultra Brace is nice too.

I should post pics from when I let the lid get away from me when the tether broke and it allowed the top lid to swing all the way over, Never noticed it until I went to change out the stock hinges for chrome ones and found out that the trunk lower had cracks at every hinge point. What a chit show that was. Ended up getting it repaired and sold the tourpak. The replacement tp was not cheap!

I will likely go back to the non-retractable line and just check it yearly for wear and tear!  :2vrolijk_21:

After reading this thread I ordered the brace today. I don't like the retractable gizmo at all, its just a piece of fishing line. I have the HD chrome TP hinges and plan on doing both upgrades at the same time. I'm thinking hinges first because they change the pivot point slightly but it might not matter. Anyone think otherwise?

I was going to do the hinges as well but the dealer said there was an issue with those causing damage as well. The brace is all you need for the support

I left the retractable unit in there because it's not in the way and that gives me a backup without having to re-install it if needed

Get the brace.  Works great.
